Cracker Barrel fired me today....
Never in my life have I worked anywhere else more disorganized and unprofessional than Cracker Barrel. They rushed to hire me in time for Thanksgiving (their BUSIEST holiday of the year) and gave me all of 1 day to be trained (virtually) and be prepared. The only formal training I received was an orientation video. No employee handbook, no menu to study at home, nothing. They would just ask whichever cook was working at the time to "help our new cook", which apparently just means ignore me as I either fumble to keep up or stand awkwardly trying to figure out where I was needed most. If I wasn't constantly asking questions or asking for direction, I was on my own, and even when I was asking, I was either ignored or talked to like an inconvenience.
Despite this, I actually managed to figure out the entire menu and most of our other procedures by myself and I kept up with the pace. All of the kitchen staff made sure to tell me I was doing fine, that I'm kicking ass, that I handled my first Thanksgiving like a pro, etc. But the MANAGEMENT.... Jesus christ, I've never met more miserable pricks in my entire life. I got constant sighs, eyerolls, warnings for things I either wasn't doing or didn't know I was doing wrong, and not once did any of them pull me aside to coach me on proper procedure or rules or to ask how I'm doing in my first week.
You know what they did do, though? Today, my 6th day, they WAITED FOR ME TO SHOW UP, called me into the office, and they fired me. When I asked why, I was given a long list of super minor nitpicks and misinterpretations of my behavior.
Yes they pay well, but it's absolutely NOT worth it. I let the GM, Guido, know that I hope he didn't feel like I wasted as much of his time as he did mine.
So if you don't mind fending for yourself and being constantly criticized for it, in the busiest, most chaotic kitchen I've ever worked in during my 11 years in the industry, then go ahead and apply at Cracker Barrel . Oh yeah, but I hope you know they search your belongings after each shift. Oh, and there is a zero-tolerance-no-tobacco-policy on property, and you'll get absolutely no breaks whatsoever.
THIS IS WHY NOBODY WANTS TO WORK. IT HAS ZERO TO DO WITH FUCKING "HANDOUTS"

Sounds like they planned to hire a temp for just the thanksgiving rush then get rid of them; that was, unfortunately, you.
can't upvote this enough
If this specific location has a Glass Door, that's what the site is made for. Warn off the next person they try this on
Bingo!

This was the first thought to cross my mind as I read the story. Have a well-deserved upvote.
Thanks!
