Dark mode!!!!

15
deprecatedcoder•

Just tried it on Windows and it SUCKS.

Dark background with light/white borders and text is worse than regular mode.

Wildly disappointed.

3
josefprusa•

Windows suck, they don't expose the API, so everyone has to hack it.

4
deprecatedcoder•

Hey man, I'll take your word on it as I've never tried to implement that for an app, I just know others have done it better.

That said, despite the emphasis I didn't mean for this to be that harsh a critique. Still easily my favorite slicer and the rest of your work is always top notch.

I'm sure one way or another this small bit will get up to speed too.

2
snoty•

"Dark mode on Windows sucks..." You are seriously saying an application "sucks" because the dark mode is not implemented well? That's ridiculous.

3†
deprecatedcoder•

No, I'm saying the dark mode implementation in that app sucks.

The app is still great and I'm looking forward to using the other new features.

2
Quajeraz•

Yeah that doesn't sound too good. That's too bad.

1
bubnikv•

there was some very recent windows 10 update that broke dark mode again. Windows 11 should be fine.

1
joshthehappy•

Seriously, how did that take this long?

0†
walong0•

Josef mentioned on the live show that the windows dark mode ended up being way more work than they thought. The dark mode for Mac has been there for a while.

6
FatHarrison•

Interesting, I wonder why considering Microsoft loves implementing dark mode recently

0†
joshthehappy•

Well, thanks.

-2
wildjokers•

The mac version has had a dark mode for a long time.

5
joshthehappy•

Yeah, but then I would have to use a Mac.

Are they actively avoid tree supports for some reason? I feel like it's the one feature that other slicers have that is clearly missing. They mentioned porting fuzzy skin from curb, could they do similar for tree supports?

22
jakabo27•

Last discussion they talked about on tree supports they said it was hard to get it strong and to use less material than standard supports do. Like they didn't want to sink much time into getting it working if it isn't going to save us filament or print time

14
g2g079•

Apparently they don't realize that people don't like them because they save time, people like them because they can be easier to work with in certain scenarios.

20
qtstance•

They do save time. Maybe not during printing but cleanup after the print. It can be very painful sometimes and tree supports could save a lot of time.

11
g2g079•

Good point

2
tacroy•

Ok, got it. So they just don't really feel they add value. Odd. Never heard that perspective.

2
DevCakes•

I believe there was also something about the new support mode potentially filling in the feature gap for certain scenarios. Can't remember what that's called.... It's like "tight" supports or something.

edit: read this comment chain, it's called "snug" https://www.reddit.com/r/prusa3d/comments/rm339m/-/hpk2262

5
minkshaman•

Yeah, still not as good as tree for less scarring.

…lol what.

Sure, whatever.

Tree supports in cura seem to be plenty strong.

I guess I’ll stick to generating my own when I have to then.

2
myheadisbumming•

They mention somewhere in the introduction that they are indeed working on tree supports. It'll just take a bit more time I guess.

1
Liberal-biberal45•

Just copy cura 🤷🏽‍♂️

1
xion92•

Another release, another reason to be disappointed for no tree supports

21
_WhoisMrBilly_•

From their blog:

We are very well aware of the many requests for Tree supports and we’re planning to add them in the future. But with our new supports, you might find your craving for tree supports significantly lower. 🙂

18
lcr727•

What's that you say? Half Life 3?

3
_WhoisMrBilly_•

Half Life Tree

3
myheadisbumming•

I fail to see how their new supports could in any way replace the need for tree supports. Its two completely different things and just useless rhetoric.

0
3Dartwork•

Yah well I just set supports on and it's overly unnecessarily supported. I don't see any improvements at all.

-7
lucky13820•

I think they were referring painting you own support feature, with that and the “snug” option, it should be better than old support, but probably still not as good as tree support.

9
wildjokers•

Select "snug" supports.

3
SplashAttacks•

This was with the new "snug" option?

2
3Dartwork•

Yah I noticed that when I launched it this morning and it still just has a sea of unnecessary supports and bloated plastic around that shouldn't be there

1
miketastic_art•

It’s getting stupid at this point

4
geekandi•

Jump to SLA and paint in supports

Edit: thanks for the downvote!

Errrr I mentioned tree support, I cannot see myself mentioning door and neither being rude with devs!!!

Go figure

4
MrManny•

Excellent list of new features! Can't wait for this to be ported into SuperSlicer! :)

5
wildjokers•

SuperSlicer is a mess of settings that no one really needs. All vomitted onto the settings page with no organization. Reminds me of Cura.

2
MrManny•

I can see what you mean. SuperSlicer surely can be intimidating at first glance. I honestly didn't bother with these too much in the beginning, I mainly just imported by PrusaSlicer profiles and went from there.

I have found that SuperSlicer has one or two tricks up its sleeve that I find appealing. For example, the option to print top layers with a single perimeter. For me, this can produce aesthetically more pleasing 3d prints in some cases, in particular with some filaments (e.g. "magicPLA"). Additionally, I found the brim ears to be particularly great at having a brim in critical areas while simultaneously slightly reducing the amount of postprocessing.

In the end, both are great slicers. I don't think one can go wrong either way :)

1
super-lizard•

Hurrah!

3
whitewarrsh•

Multi-material painting is awesome!

3

It so is, if only my mmu2 did not drive me crazy I would use it so much more

BRIM FOR INDIVIDUAL OBJECTS!!!!!

Seriously, might seem dumb but I moved to super slicer for this feature alone 6+ months ago

3
unserfa•

Oh yes!

2
buildandboard•

Very awesome to have! I've been bouncing into the beta these past few months to try out some of the newer features, and I'll be glad to not have to do that anymore!

2
axcro•

I see mention of uploading G-Code files to the printer over the network. Is this available for the Mini+ or just the i3?

2
[deleted]•

[deleted]

5
axcro•

Oh, it requires Octoprint. Thanks!

2
Grim-Sleeper•

OctoPrint is really nice though. I strongly recommend to install it. For the MK3S, it's a very easy and pretty inexpensive upgrade, now that the Zero 2 is out. Not sure whether the Mini+ has a similarly nice upgrade path.

5
dnew•

I found out there's a version of octoprint around for old phones. If you have an old smartphone sitting around, it might be the easiest way to get it set up.

2
TheTruffi•

it must be Mini or newer. The Mk3 does not has network support.

2
TheTruffi•

Yes i know. But this feature is not new :)

2
tomhusband•

So I guess I install this over the version I currently have on my Win 10 laptop? How about the Octoprint API key? Is that picked up or do I need to input that again?

1†
DraakjeYoblama•

I installed it and it looks like my personal settings are still there, if you want to be sure you can copy the old files before you update.

6
tomhusband•

I'll do that, good idea. Thanks.

2
jjp81•

Are they ever going to add measuring capabilities?

1
wildjokers•

The snug supports in 2.4.0 are great. I no longer have to go back to cura when I slice a model with supports. Supports in PS have gone from being an abomination to being great.

1
hijinksensue•

Fav new feature so far is the time remaining on the printer screen shifts to "time until next color change" every few seconds. Basically everything I print has a color change, so this is super useful and appreciated.

1
Shufflebuzz•

Could someone please explain how to update from 2.3 to 2.4 on Linux (Ubuntu Mate)?
The download includes two .Appimage files. I don't remember seeing a "GTK3" file last time. Which one do I use and why?

Also, how do I get rid of the old versions?
I have PrusaSlicer 2.2 and 2.3 currently installed and I'd rather remove the old versions, hopefully without losing my preferences.

1
myheadisbumming•

I normally use Cura to slice my things. I thought I'd try prusaslicer after it's been updated so much and it looks promising, but without tree supports not really useful for slicing advanced models yet. Here is hoping they'll add that soon.

Also Cura has a simple option 'don't automatically drop the model to the build plate', basically allowing you to freely adjust the z height of the model. Am I just stupid and can't find it in prusa slicer or does it really not exist? If I try to adjust z in prusa slicer just nothing happens.

1
Deathfuzz•

You can adjust z to move a part below the build plate but not above

1
myheadisbumming•

so weird, moving it above the print plate and then using tree supports is the most common way I would slice more complex models.
