Obsessive compulsive

Obsessive compulsive

she said

as the numbers rang in my head -

7-8, 7-8

it’s getting late,

I state, syphoning those words

8-9, 8-9

do you repeat speech in that way?

she asks.

as though lines from a play?

9-10, 9-10

I rock her words in my pen -

obse-ssive compulsive

obse-ssive compulsive

10-11,10-11

I repeat

trying to turn off the heat of those words

11-12, 11-12

my foot taps in rhythm

as I writhe in her stare

12-13, 12-13

It’s a coping mechanism she says -

a trained reaction

13-14, 13-14

It must be time to go

the clock says so

14-15, 14-15

Good bye, till next week

I say

as they repeat in my head

Obse-ssive compulsive

obse-ssive compulsive

I never really thought I had OCD, the way I organize things would make me think I have the opposite, but I get the loop sort of narrative you are going for.

I get stuck in loops a lot which I guess is a form of OCD. The musician in me likes the flow and the implied time scales. Makes me think of a therapist appointment sort of.

I think people have misconceptions about OCD. Being OCD doesn’t necessarily mean that you are also super clean or super organised (or that you open and close door handles multiple times). It manifests in different ways.

I very much appreciate this piece, as it gives me insight to a perspective not my own. You wrote this in such a way that someone without OCD (like myself) could still get a glimpse through your eyes.

Thank you so much for sharing with us. I appreciate it! Have you heard of Neil Hilborn? He has a spoken word piece about OCD that I think you may like!

I genuinely appreciate you being willing to share such an open honest and vulnerable piece with us!

This is a very poignant poem, especially as someone with OCD myself. It reads kind of like a nursery rhyme, at least to me, which is the same tone my compulsions sound like in my head.

It's an interesting glimpse into an interesting mind. I personally do not have OCD, but when I read poetry like this, I can feel the issues you have, the compulsiveness, and how it can affect your personal relationships. The repeating of the numbers is interesting to see, although I cannot personally understand it, I cannot imagine feeling as if you are not in complete control of your own mind. Thank you for sharing your perspective!

This is a really interesting poem! I like the repetition of the numbers and the words "obse-ssive compulsive." I'm guessing this is a therapist's appointment? The only parts I wondered about were the parts about "the clock in my gate" (what does that mean? why is there a gate?) and "she told me I eat my lines" (does this mean poetry lines? lines in a script?). But overall I really like it! I think the part about "trying to turn off the heat of those words" captures the stigma and weight that can be carried in a mental health diagnosis very well. Nice job! Keep writing!

Hi! Thanks so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it. I agree re the word gate - it was a far stretch. I have since edited it. By “lines” I mean sentences. I wanted it to rhyme with the word 9. Do you think this is also stretching it too far?

It’s hard to say. I personally find it a little unclear but other people might not.

Thank you so much. I have amended this part of it too (I hope this is not frowned upon). I appreciate your feedback.

It looks great! No problem!

Hi. I deleted the other post. So the comments are not reused. I wasn’t aware that they had to be original - just a certain age.

Okay, I've restored the post.

I like the repitition here, it’s a nice rhythm, I also really like how you broke up obsessive compulsive into obse-ssive compolsive, it’s like picking the word apart in your brain and I like how it reads.
