A Storm
December shakes windows senseless,
pries iced fingers under rooftiles
and flings one into next door's hedge,
a frisbee that could take a person's head off.
Evergreens flash their leaves at naked trees
those furious bears
who dance on heated iron in the wind
and people run through sweeping curtains
down the road with books over their heads
like chicken houses sprouting arms and legs.
The streetlights are on by four, and the kettle
screams for company. Quick smoke out the back
door, another for the sake of it. Drowned ends
float like bloated corks, aimlessly -
two small pieces of a soul, lost at sea.
