What’s everyone’s favorite script they’ve ever read?

COMMUNITY

Just curious what everyone’s favorite script is. Not necessarily the best MOVIE they’ve seen. But the script they read that they were blown away by at that stage in the process.

The Social Network

That actually was the best script for me as well, I remember my reaction after reading it was “wtf? This is amazing!”

18
WyldeGi•

Is it worth watching the movie or reading the script first?

7
Escarpments-•

Do both. The order is up to you.

13
WyldeGi•

On it! I’ve been meaning to watch it

6
HebrewJohnson•

Then read any/all of the first 4 seasons of West Wing. Aaron Sorkin scripts are PhD level screenwriting education.

8
duaneap•

I say definitely watch first.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Take out the abortion sub plot and I 100% agree. Even with it in it’s still a damn good script, it is just a little heavier than it needs to be

8
WILSON_CK•

So good.

3
dannyj999•

Totally agree.

I'm in the minority, but I find the movie to be terribly miscast. The script was really eye opening to me about what great work Kaufman did. A gem.

analogkid01•

Definitely in the minority, but just out of curiosity, who would you cast?

8
dannyj999•

Ok so they're not the right age for the parts now, but I did a read-through where I "cast" Viola Davis and Andre Braugher as the leads and they were fantastic! Lol.

I don't really buy Kate Winslet as kooky and irresponsible. She has too much of a calm presence. I think the role requires a little more fire. (I think Jennifer Lawrence could also do this well.)

Joel is a pretty boring character. You need an actor who can make boring feel dynamic. To me, that's Andre Braugher all the way. Maybe I'll give the role to Jeremy Strong on the next read through and see what happens.

In defense of the original cast, that was the point of the casting. Using an actor like Jim Carrey known for their energetic and wacky performances and then place them in a more subdued role. The inverse for Kate Winslet's role. It adds both to their disfunction and chemistry as an on-screen couple.

3
jster1752•

that is a fantastic fan-cast, i would kill to see that happen

I really loved The Defective Detective by Terry Gilliam. Never made, of course, but full of his incredible fantasy visuals. Sadly, lost my copy of it over the years.

best screenplay ever written and it’s almost more impressive he actually pulled it off in the movie

Kaufman is brilliant!

Pretty much any of his screenplays are incredible

The first script I've ever read was Serenity, by Joss Whedon, but the very best has to be Her by Spike Jonze. I love the movie. I love the story. I love the acting. But the script is its own masterpiece. Another one I absolutely love is Whiplash.

20
PorcoSebbo•

I cried reading the Her script. And I'd already seen the movie multiple times.

3
zsquinten•

I don't know about "best", but the script that inspired me to learn screenwriting was Limitless. I was bored in a hospital and somehow I came across it. Read it in one sitting and have been writing screenplays ever since.

18
IHeartWordplay•

Not the best ever, but a recent script that’s absolutely awesome… from the Blacklist, ‘Abbi and the Eighth Wonder’. It’s annoyingly great.

Agreed!!
