My personal theory on where Roy and Keely's (and Jamie's) relationship is heading

Season 3 Speculation/Ideas

So it seems to me they're trying to set up that Keely is torn between having feelings for Roy, but still having lingering feelings for Jamie, also.

My prediction is: They're setting up a polyamory storyline.

Okay, I know what you're thinking, but stay with me here.

It probably goes something like: Keely isn't sure if she should be with Roy, even though she loves him, because she still has lingering feelings for Jamie, and aren't you supposed to only have eyes for the one you love? This is why she seems to be having doubts at the end of Season 2.

They break up, but Keely is miserable. She gets together with Jamie, but she still loves Roy.

She learns about polyamory from some other character - probably one of the European players (let's say... the Dutch player?) - and thinks "Wow, I didn't know that was an option!"

During this time Roy and Jamie are frosty with one another again on and off the pitch; a major setback, just when they seemed to be getting along!

She musters up the courage to talk to Roy about it after a few chocolate/wine/whatever girl talk sessions in Rebecca's office.

When she finally approaches Roy, he refuses point blank and is offended by the idea. He is grumpy about it at first, but reconsiders (probably after a Diamond Dogs session with lots of barking, a joke about "worth two in the bush" or something dumb like that, and comforting platitudes about finding true happiness with the one you love) and reluctantly agrees to go along with it.

Jamie and Roy have a heart to heart and become not just friends but co-partners.

They all end the season a happy, healthy, polyamorous thruple.

Again: I realize how this sounds, but I swear this is just my educated guess at what they're doing, not a personal fanfic I'll be disappointed if we don't get. If I had to bet on where this storyline was going, it might be an outside bet, but I would bet on this.

From a writer/producer's perspective, it's a progressive spin on the classic love-triangle trope, and it will no doubt earn the show all kinds of plaudits in progressive circles for being one of the first major shows to give visibility to polyamory as a normal thing, rather than an oddity or a punchline (which would be a good thing, don't get me wrong!). I can already imagine the glowing thinkpieces from critics about what a bold choice this is.

I realize this theory is probably a bit too out there for most, but I'm honestly only writing this down for posterity's sake so I can reference this later in case they do go down this route, so I can prove that I absolutely, 100% called it.

Anyway, that's my theory!

Interesting theory!

I am more on the side of Keely realizing her career is really taking off, she’s becoming a strong, independent woman, and embracing that part of herself. At the beginning of the series when she talks with Rebecca in the bathroom during the gala, she mentions being stuck in the same place in life dating the same type of men. She’s never single for long.

I think they are setting her up to be independent and willingly unconnected to anyone.

But also, just my two cents too. I like either option, honestly!

I was thinking this same thing! I feel like it just makes sense from a plot standpoint. Jamie has changed and become a better person, and the show needs to reward him for that. Also, Roy and Jamie’s relationship has been progressing. They’re still some hard feelings, but they started to become more ok with each other. I feel like this is also a good way to reintroduce a tension/rivalry into their relationship, but it would also force them to have to try to work things out.

And I totally agree that this is the type of show to have a polyamorous relationship so as to be applauded for the progressiveness.

I’m also kinda hoping this is what will happen, because I would love more representation of healthy polyamorous relationships. I won’t be mad if it doesn’t, but it would just be nice to see :)

Was pretty confident this would be downvoted and ridiculed by the fanbase and I'm totally cool with that, do your worst.

But like I say: I just want this in writing for posterity if it turns out I'm absolutely right.

Enh, 100 to 1 maybe.

But I don't know, I have a gut feeling this is the kind of stunt this show would pull, and I just want to have proof I called it if I'm right.

It's clear Keely's conflicted about having lingering feelings for Jamie, but is also in love with Roy. I feel like this show seems to lean into conflicts being solved by the characters having their cake and eating it too (e.g. literally no consequences or downside for Sam's protest against Dubai Air), and this would be exactly the solution that lets Keely do that.

From a showrunner's perspective: It's an unexpected way to subvert a common love-triangle romance trope, and it gives them the ability to say they're taking on a subject no other show has done before (at least in a way that isn't just a punchline or a gag) in a serious and progressive way.

That would, in turn, earn the show all kind of plaudits from the same circles of progressives and critics that already love the show's take on toxic masculinity, etc. etc. I can already imagine the praise, thinkpieces, and buzz something like this would generate.

I think most people reading this thread think this is just my weird, personal fanfic, and whatever. I'm not saying this is how I would write it, I'm saying this is what I can imagine the writers of this show doing for the (admittedly cynical) reasons I've listed. I think it would be nice for polyamory to get some visibility in a mainstream TV show, certainly, but I don't imagine they'd do something like that for purely altruistic reasons, either.

I'm probably wrong, but now I have something to point to if I turn out to be right. If people disagree, or think this is a terrible idea, it'll be all the more interesting to go back and see if that attitude changes if I turn out to be right after all. :-)
