Rejuvenating Days [2704] - Part 1

This is the first part of a story that I've been working on. It's definitely the most polished component. I'd prefer to give minimal background exposition because I'd rather know its potential as an opener. Do you feel sympathy for the characters? Do you have an inkling of this world or where the story will go?
