The physics of this game never cease to confuse me.

T:A physics :psyduck:

Good video, though.

Wow this game makes so much sense. I wonder if people would have noticed if they used real physics?

lol wow your flair had me going for a second.

I wonder if people would be able to ski if they used real physics. It seems to violate the law of conservation of energy along with slightly altering newtonian physics.

6
CakeCatSheriff•

Yes. Insanely faster in fact. Given that the zero-friction technology would actually work.

3
kioni•

I think it would be much slower actually. Any change in direction would be at a severe cost to speed. Going 300 sanics and making a 45º turn in the air would either require a great deal of distance or would be at a large cost to speed. That is unless our air maneuverability boosters are actually considerably more powerful than our basic jump jet... in which case we might as well be using them for everything.

Basically any change in direction (gaining altitude, turning, even falling), would cost more energy/speed than it currently does. This quirk exists because you can improperly translate your speed into any direction without the typical inertial costs.

Any change in direction would be at a severe cost to speed.

Jetpack, maybe, but not in terms of skiing on the ground. Find a slope for a ramp, launch yourself upwards, find another slope, come down traveling in another direction with almost the same speed. Unless you get some inelastic collisions, your ability to change directions is limited only by the slopes available.

Play around with Project Free Fall, entirely grounded in intuitive, real, physics.

Changing direction is as simple as landing on the right side of a hill. Of course you can carve and/or use directional jets as well. (no free air movement like T:A)

[deleted]•

I believe it would work. Conservation of energy is maintained since the jetpack is adding energy into the system. You're essentially turning vertical velocity into horizontal velocity when you go down a curved slope.

2
[deleted]•

It doesn't violate conservation of energy, since the jetpack expends energy lifting you, you are just gaining back that energy as kinetic energy.

Jetpack energy -> Gravitational potential energy -> Kinectic energy. Nothing is violated.

2
kioni•

Yes, but I'm mainly referring to the energy costs involved in changes of velocity.

It'd certainly solve almost every major issue with the game. (MGs would still need an accuracy nerf, maybe)

wh... jesus, this is my problem?

8
JustinEis•

Yes. Watching this made me sad because it explains so much, yet explains so little at the same time.

AskJamesRabidCadaver•

Often, when I'm trying to get back on the flag stand as a heavy of some sort... say on Kata... I can't figure out why I can't quite make it. sigh

2
fireb0rnMCfireb0rn (USEast)•

Thankfully no routes have incorporated the spin so far...

3
TheSystem_IsDown•

But many routes begin by jeckpacking straight up. So I guess spinning makes all of those faster.

3
AskJamesRabidCadaver•

Oh god. I have enough trouble with preplanned routes already...

3
BlizzardFenrir(EU)•

Seems like this is all due to the fact that physics change after 72 mph, given the end of this video? They really need to get rid of that someway, because look at all the strange artifacts it causes elsewhere in the physics.

My mind is blown.

Shit, I found out how to go further.. I'm not making a video but you should learn mouse strafing. I found a video, now he plays hl2dm instead, but the concept is the same. He travels faster in the curvature of the grid that permeates all fps games.

3
totalradass•

That is exactly what the first part of this video made me think of.

It's wierd, I watch this and I'm like "wow, what weird physics", but when I look back I realise I've been doing this all along subconsiously.

weird*

2_centsRECK0NER•

This should definitely change my game in Arena. So many times as soldier I barely make it back up to a platform only to come up a foot short when my jet runs out and I fall to my clumsy death.

2
Terr_•

Old news over at the HiRez forums ;) Someone made a javascript simulator for the weird behavior. (Is more weird in some places, less in others.)

Sottilde•

Hey, that's my code!

It's still a work in progress, it has a few quirks (don't start jetting holding w+d, for example) but I think it captures a lot of the weirdness. Some people have been able to do some totally ridiculous things with it.

I think it clearly shows why velocity rotation vs. real physics is a terrible, terrible idea.

Also there was no guidance from blecro on this, it was just a personal project.

4
DoWhileOP•

This code was originally written by blecro (the author of the video) to simulate T2C and was adapted to T:A under the guidance of blecro. This simulator doesn't capture all of the new physics quirks/numbers described recently on the forums, and that is partially why blecro made this video.

2
talitusDEAD AS A DOORNAIL•

They really should fix these terrible physics.

2
Gigglestheclown•

I think I may be blind, but what are they doing differently to achieve a higher altitude? From what I can tell during the first part, they're just moving back in forth? Could someone explain this like I'm a 23 year old Romanian man-child?

2
DoWhileOP•

Try this out: from a standstill, hold forward+jet and spin in circles like a helicopter blade. You'll gain more altitude. By spinning (or going back and forth), you are keeping your speed under the magic 72kph limit where all physics goes to hell and you maintain maximum thrust.

What the second half of the video shows you is that after you hit the magic 72kph limit and all physics goes to hell, you can also gain altitude using a different method.

2
SpytapSpytap on NA West•

Uhhhh....

The fuck? How are new players supposed to know that there's a magical 72kph limit where you need to change the buttons you hold to continue accelerating?

2
lonjaxson•

Is it to continue accelerating or to continue gaining height? I'm so confused.

As a PTH, should I be holding back whenever I want to gain height and forward when I want to gain speed?

1
Kantham•

MLG 360 NO JET... oh wait.

2
[deleted]•

Holy shit I feel like a moron for playing for as long as I have and never realizing this.

2
DoktorTeufelSLD4LIFE•

We can use A, D, W and S to nudge ourselves forward, back and side-to-side while in midair. Right?

Why wouldn't these "maneuvering jets" also work in tandem with the "main jet" when jetting straight up and looking into the sky pressing W? It makes perfect sense to me.

2
kevile[VGTG][VGS]•

There is just way too much science going on here.
