Does God Lie?

Discussion

Consider all the instruments of war and all the damage they cause. With all that to deal with, is it completely unreasonable for God to both use lying as a tool and be the best person there is?

Well God lied at the very beginning when he said that eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil would kill Adam and Eve.

When I was a Christian I thought that meant they lost immortality

It's one of those "well actually" things Christians do to try and make things work.

The biblical god is a war god so that wouldn't be a problem for him:

"The LORD is a man of war; The LORD is His name." - Exodus 15:3

"Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood." - Jeremiah 48:10

The god of the bible admits to being a deceiver who leads some prophets to being deceived and then destroyed:

"And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel." - Ezekiel 14:9

The god of the bible also admits to sending out lying spirits:

"And he said, I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the LORD said, Thou shalt entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so. Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil against thee." - 2 Chronicles 18:21-22

Even if the biblical god exists, it still wouldn't be a good idea to trust him since he admits to being a deceiver and sending out lying spirits. He also claims to be the only god (Deuteronomy 32:39), but then says that he wants to punish other gods (Jeremiah 46:25).

This is a good argument against presuppositional apologetics.

It's not a gainful endeavour to engage in a debate with a presuppositionist. He already presupposes God as a base of anything, he'll admit that God lies, so he's still God. And if you admit that God lies, then God must exist.

These passages don't square at all with the modern free will apologetics. The bible is pretty clear that free will isn't a thing and god deliberately deceived people in accordance to his whims.

Those verses suggest a lack of free-will due to the manipulation and deception, but there are also verses which directly promote predestination which is against free-will:

"For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified." - Romans 8:29-30

"According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will" - Ephesians 1:4-5

"In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:" - Ephesians 1:11

"Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?" - Romans 9:19-20

Same i don't trust a thing it says

Interestingly I realize the multi-god principle in the bible. It cannot be explained differently. God of Israel is one god withing others. He wages war (probably in gods realm too, which is the reason why he needs his army of angels) and must beat other gods, such as in exodus with teh pharao where he plays games with them. Their god can match the first 3 or 4 of the plagues, before the concede.

Apparently he won, so suddenly he is the god of everyone.

Knowing that it encouraged slavery and genocide and eternal torture ,yeah I won't be surprised since it is proclaimed that he's omnipotent

Damn right that bible god lies.

unbalancedcheckbookEx-fundigelical, Athiest•

In reality, since God (if one exists) never actually says anything, I'm going to say no. God doesn't lie. If you are asking if God lies in the bible, I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. God told Adam that if he ate from the forbidden tree that he would die. He didn't.

i never thought about that until pointed out to me recently: Is the original text saying "losing immortality", which would be correct and not a lie,

Or has it the meaning die now...

Quite a difference.

I'm not an expert in ancient Hebrew, but my understanding is that the most plain literal translation is something like "die a physical death on that day". Of course there is some wiggle room there, but you don't get to the idea that it was a spiritual sort of death or a taking away of immortality unless you import a few layers of interpretation and hand waving.

Which god are you describing or let me say which god are you talking about?(im not talking about the one in the bible)

Luke 18:18-19
18 A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good-except God alone."

Luke 23:50
50 Now there was a man named Joseph [of Arimathea], a member of the Council, a good and upright man,...
Either:

  1. Joseph of Arimathea is God

  2. Jesus is Lying

3

Would God really do that? Just lie to us?
