Nothing with sharing the info, but should we let a staffing firm tell us how much we should ask for?

Devil's advocate: the more you get paid, the more they get paid, especially if they're on a % system

Makes sense, but only if we asume they get paid a percentage of the candidate’s pay.

I'm pretty sure I went to one of their offices back in the mid-late 90s to meet a recruiter (was common practice then) and during my time in their office, I heard a gong sound 2 or 3 times. When I asked "what's up with the gong?", the recruiter told me it's what they do when they end up placing someone.

I'm pretty sure that was these guys. Anyone else remember this from that time frame?

I never ended up working with them but I see they're obviously still around. Anyone know of any other big nation-wide tech recruiters? I'd like to see what else is out there for placement into remote work.

If you're looking for remote work, skip on robert half and teksystems (the two biggest I can think of). make sure your linkedin is set to available, and trollop through hnhiring.me on the monthly posts + other remote job boards.

these agencies are highly nonfunctional.

Odd. I've never worked with RH but my last gig was with Teksystems and it was a fantastic process. I think you just need to get connected with the right recruiter. Mine specialized in my situation (100% remote, angular, .NET) and I had a whole speed dating two weeks of over 10 interviews and about 4 offers (If I recall correctly).

Out of the 8ish years they regularly contacted me, they managed to get one job for me, after shuffling me between like 10 recruiters. It paid ok, but they certainly only specialize in entry level and maybe mid level hiring. Once you start wanting to make actual money, they can't help you. They also can hardly find consistent jobs so unless they place you full time good luck getting anything a second time.

They also are the most disorganized company that regularly reached out. I'd have to explain my life story to every recruiter who insisted my information was saved in their system. Yet, the random calls I got from them nationwide proved otherwise.

Thanks for the hnhiring link, I've always heard good things about the thread, but could never be assed to search through all the comments.

These seem low.

Am I missing it, or does this ignore stock options and RSUs?

It does. This seems to be focused on base compensation, and not total compensation.
