Feeling guilty for making my mom cry.

SUPPORT, NEED ADVICE

I yelled at my parents today after I had just gotten home from a graveyard shift where I had been thinking of all the things I missed out on because of my parents hoarding and neglect. I realized that since my room was used to store other family members stuff I never had room to explore hobbies of my own. I yelled at them because they bought one of my brothers a house with the agreement that he pay them back but it been a decade and I don't believe he's made any payments on it. They've fixed up that house while letting the house we live decay; about a decade ago the the tiles fell off the shower wall and my dad just put up some hard plastic as a quick fix so now we have a cockroach nest in the wall. I finally told them that i hate them because they ruined my life and I can't forgive them because even if I could turn my life around I'll never get back my teen's or early 20's. i tried talking to her later in the day and while crying she told me that everything I said was true and that she had ruined my life. It a catch 22 where I can't take the guilt from hurting her, can't keep living in this house unless something changes, and I can't afford to move out.

If she's the type to guilt trip (i.e., make you feel bad and try to trick you into apologizing and taking all the blame), ignore her.

If she had an epiphany and is genuinely showing remorse, tell her you'd love to sit down and figure out a way together to make it better. Like things they could fix around the house, moving or getting rid of the things in your room, etc.

It seems like your whole family is dealing with powerful emotions. You obviously care for your parents or else you wouldn't have felt bad. It may be worth it to look into some shared therapy if you have the means to talk to someone. They could provide an environment where you could say all that stuff without being so blunt. Your mom somewhat recognizes that there is a problem as well.

It’s awful seeing family upset. This is you being empathetic and kind, and that’s really beautiful! But it’s not your fault she’s in this situation. If the consequences of her actions means she has to deal with the guilt of ruining the first 25 years of your life, then that’s the bed she has to lay in. She will have to find a way to come to terms with what she’s done and how you (rightfully) feel, and hopefully make amends with you. In the mean time just remember while it’s really big hearted of you to feel for her, you didn’t make this situation - she did this to herself and she’s just gotta deal with the fallout of that.

I relate to your post so, so much. I'm truly sorry you had to grow up this way, and experience this level of neglect.

That being said... Hoarding is now recognized as it's own mental disorder.. which I say because it's important to understand that: What you experienced wasn't your fault! It also wasn't due to a lack of love from your parents or because they didn't feel as though you deserve better. They are likely very aware that you deserved better and wanted to do so; but likely did not have the capability of doing so.

Don’t feel guilty for making her feel guilty for something she IS guilty of. She should feel guilty.

She knows exactly what she’s doing.
