Anything other than adding my name to waitlists I can do to speed up the process?

I've been looking to purchase a Rolex (Yatchmaster) for a couple of months (I prefer to buy from a store directly). I've added my name to about 4 different locations around Toronto, Canada) over the past 6. months. I have no idea when they take my information down if I'm actually on a list somewhere or it goes straight to the trash.

I realize these watches are going to take a while to come in, but is there anything I can do to speed up the process or is it just a matter of waiting patiently for a call?

No one on the planet prefers to buy at a 100% markup on the gray market…

Bring donuts and coffee to your AD staff, take them to lunch, offer free massages. Although that I am joking, most probably these previously mentioned tactics in this sub resulted in watch acquisition at MSRP but dignity lost…

The ones that concern me do all of that with no loss of dignity.

I remember reading one who I think visited 2x a week bringing presents for months until they told him to stop.

Yes go grey, no guarantees you’ll ever get a call.

I went to an AD in a large market and was offered a 37mm rhodium yacht master a few weeks later (this was in March). I politely declined, opting to wait for rose gold, but this was after only a few repeat visits. I would encourage you to go often and focus your request on a specific model.

What I don’t get is, knowing they don’t have any Rolexes, how do you not feel weird going back for repeat “visits”? When you know they don’t have anything to sell you?

I’ve asked my ad for several models of different brands and they never have the models I’m looking for in any brand.

There's zero you can do. That's what makes this so infuriating.

The reason there are none available is because your AD is selling them all to the grey market.

The only place you can buy a Rolex in theory is an AD. There's none in the AD's shops yet the grey market is full of watches. So it's clear what's going on.

That's very unlikely. AD's get an average of 2 Rolexes per day and demand far exceeds that. AD's actually bundle to greys LESS than they did 5 years ago when Rolexes were readily available.

Where does the grey market purchase from? Maybe we should go there.

Mostly individuals.

Do you have a wife?

Maybe. Does having one get me a faster rolex?

Once she visits the AD yeah it will.

If anyone knew this do you honestly think they would divulge it to you? Go and talk to an AD and ask the same question.

Because ADs won’t blow hot air up your skirt…

Buy some jewelry from that AD. Spend good money at their store. Develop a good relationship with the salesperson. Check in periodically but don’t be a nuisance. Be clear about which model you want but be aware that they might only be able to offer something similar. They aren’t going to care much about you adding your name to an already very long “registry of interest” (it’s not a waiting list). The only thing that really sets you apart from other customers is, first, have you spent good money at the store? And second, how did you conduct yourself? If you spend money and treat them with respect, you’ll have a good shot at eventually getting the call. If you are a stranger and a prick, then they won’t even bother.

Rather than spend money for jewelry I don't want, it would be nice if they would just be upfront about how much extra it would cost to move to the front.

Alternatively, you can buy other, non-Rolex watches if any of them strike your fancy. Look, here's the unfortunate truth - if you are not a collector and have no intention of buying any other watch but this one Rolex, you are probably better served saving up to purchase gray market.

If you intend to start a collection, then try to buy most of it from this one AD and establish a purchase history with them. It does not have to be jewelry specifically, although that tends to be the product that has the highest markup overall (for the store).

The reality is, the sales associate doesn't have a huge supply of watches in the back and slowly trickling them out to those they think are "worthy". It's more like they get in maybe 2 or 3 watches a month and those watches get allocated to certain sales associates.

If yours got allocated one, you have to think, why would they call you first? Certainly being a big spender helps, but so does being polite, professional, and friendly. Sales associates are human beings after all.

Appreciate the insight, thanks!

It’s not a bribe FFS, ADs just cater to their good customers. No different than any other business. If you haven’t ever been a customer of their business and you just walked in cold (or called) to ask for an allocated, low supply, high demand Rolex watch, why would they sell to you instead of a long-standing customer of theirs who has spent money there? It’s frustrating. I know. The demand for Rolex makes its so hard to get one, but many people only want a Rolex because it’s in demand.

Bro this gets asked at least 3 times a day, just use the search bar.

The grey market premium on a Yacht Master is actually not too difficult. Toronto is a notoriously tough market and summertime is coming. You have to ask yourself, do you want to wait until next winter or do you want your Rolex tomorrow so you can enjoy the spring and summer? Just pay the premium. Sell another one of your watches to cover it if you must.
