It is worth noting that no living German general has ever fought in a war.
This probably applies to most NATO nations.
I’m pretty sure Germans have participated in Afghanistan and have experienced combat.
Definitely. As have other NATO members.
And maybe some of the generals actually saw combat.
Here is his Wikipedia article.
I find your comment confusing. First you say no living general ever fought in a war and then you say “maybe some have actually seen combat”.
Here is a list of generals who served in different countries for different missions. Some of them were in Afghanistan before being a general.
And also if you look at the rank of the generals they started already very high. Yes in The Bundeswehr officers lead by example (führen von vorne) as in many other countries. But at some point in your career this isn’t done anymore. And a general is definitely not at the frontline anymore sitting in a foxhole.
So, many of them were already above this point when they served in a mission. But this doesn’t mean they don’t necessarily have combat experience. Their task to lead and coordinate unit/company/division or what not was trained. So I don’t understand your first point at all. Do you mean they didn’t fight at the frontline? If this is your point then maybe yes…. Your argument implies that the general in the video, or all generals have no idea what they are doing.
Maybe I understood your point wrong. If so, sry.
It's a discussion.
We don't have to agree.
Your question and contribution is appreciated.
Thanks for the link. It doesn't say if they were actually in Afghanistan, or working administratively in Bohn. However, if you follow the citations, you can see at least one of them went to Afghanistan in an administrative capacity.

The question isn't whether a general is in a foxhole (literally or metaphorically).
The question is if at any point in his career he served in such a capacity.
Yes, they were all there with us. People died from every nato country, in Afghanistan!
Every 10 days, as many Russians die in Ukraine, as all NATO troops in 20 years in Afghanistan
That’s sounds like deplorable leadership!
Hey now it's not a contest, but Russia needs something to brag about I guess.
and losses.
Edit:
I'm not sure if this comment is downvoted because of a wrong translation.
I meant we had soldiers killed in action in Afghanistan.
It is worth noting that almost no rocket engineer who actually designed rockerts flew to space as an Astronaut. So their opinions are pointless.
A more accurate analogy would be a rocket engineer who had never designed a rocket.
not really.
NATO was active in Afghanistan, and German troops were part of that. Do you have a source for this claim?
This is the right question.
I've been expecting it, and researching not just General Gunter Schneider, but other active NATO Generals.
Here is his Wikipedia entry.

Service as a staff officer
From 1999 to 2001, Schneider returned to Diez, where he was head of the staff department for logistical support (G4). This was followed by a position in the army headquarters in Bonn , then as an operations officer in the army command in Koblenz from 2003 to 2005. As commander, he led Panzergrenadier Battalion 152 in Schwarzenborn until 2006, during which time he served as commander of the German task force in the 9th German ISAF contingent in action in Afghanistan . [1]
Schneider then became a consultant for basic personnel matters at the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn and from 2007 to 2009 he was head of personnel for colonels with general staff training. From 2009 to 2010 he was head of the department in the personnel office of the Bundeswehr in Cologne and from 2010 to 2012 commander of Jäger Regiment 1 in Schwarzenborn [2] , during which time he again took part in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan (Senior Mentor 3rd Brigade, 209th ANA - Corps, 28 DEU EinsKtgt ISAF ) . From November 2012 [3] to September 2014, Schneider was head of theCombat Training Center of the Army [1] , this was handed over to Colonel Uwe-Alexander Becker . [4]
Unlike the Russian army.
Which has never prepared for a war? I miss your point.
It doesn’t give me warm fuzzies to see German officers discussing war in German. I suppose that’s some kind of conditioned response we’ll all have to get past.
Should give you the warm and fuzzies if they're on our side. If it weren't for s shit leadership 80 years ago, we wouldn't need a translator for him. They've always had good soldiers.
Yeah. Losing two wars where it was basically them against the rest of the world doesn’t mean they’re bad at war.
It was actually crazy how successful (nazi) Germany fought against the whole world on multiple fronts, while not having a huge population. As terrible as it was, it is really interesting to see the strategies, tactics and military engineering. Until Hitler took over and messed everything up. Fortunately.
Thats a myth created and perpetuated by nazi generals. Hitler especially early on made the right choice overriding the generals. It was later on that he started going a bit mad. (But germany was already screwed by that point)
Wait a second firstly they had 10+ years to build up and army. They brain washed the youth into militery cadet schools to have a basically a religios army that would die for hitler . France and britain had dated armies so there blitz took france and briton very easily in the first battles by having built up a modern army with the best tanks over the 10 years. The soldiers where also high on drugs no lie look it up they where wired.
They also had all of mainland europe in there pocket to fund and build there war machine for a good 4 years of the war.
So dont think germans in ww2 where the best they just had alot of prep time. If russia did the same they would Have the power ti take all of europe but think fek its a corrupt and lack brains.
But to go back to germany they for have a good mind for building weapons without a doubt.
Pervitin, the drug you mentioned is like methamphetamine, as far as I know.
Dan Carlin host of Hardcore History thinks the German army of WW1 was the best army in history.
Alas, my German is insufficient to understand this.
You can add English subtitles if you open the video on Youtube.
Automated translation from German works really well.
German is the closest currently spoken foreign language to English so that doesn’t surprise me.
It’s closer than Scottish, anyway.
Looks at Dutch and Fries
I think there are two other languages that are closer.

Colonel Klink?
Beat me to it!
Very interesting interview. Thanks for the sharing.
There are more interviews. I think they are interesting, because this aren't politicians talking hot air, but real people knowing, what's up

What is the jist?
Oh, that this was a repost from 1943 from the title
It must be a headline from The Onion.
competence and Equipment are different things
Odd that the Germans didn’t pivot away from that Hitler gray uniform cloth.
The colour of the Hitler followers is and was always brown. Grey has been the base colour of the German army uniforms and nowadays it’s the color of German ceremonial suits.
Air force is blue, so is the navy. Only the army is grey.
Maybe it’s just the tailoring
Idk why people are downvoting I thought this too even tho I’m 100% pro German rearmament
No idea, I will survive. Bring the hurt people.
