The Heaviest Gift That Exists

Poem

for your birthday, / i will gift you the heaviest gift that exists. / not new, damaged many times, / removed from its power source to be packed away, / but somehow still functioning just as potently as before.

//

i will wrap it in beautiful paper, / perfect the box with a pristine bow, / even put kisses of red lipstick, / to make you more curious, / to attract you more to the mystery inside. / I will hand-deliver it myself, / despite its hefty size. /

//

when i arrive at your place, / i will drop it by accident / because i can no longer bear its weight / and your front door will shatter to pieces. / i will make my clumsy entrance / through a hidden door / and greet you / and you will say you forgive me for the mess i have made / which affects the appearance of your place / but you won't really forgive me / because appearance matters greatly.

//

time will pass. / you will talk, i will ramble. / i will make love to you, you will fuck me. / we will say our goodbyes / before the big reveal.

//

you will open my gift only to find / a piece of my heart inside the box. / an actual piece of my heart, / because metaphors / eventually run dry, / but the heart of an alive person never does, /

//

but this is real life. / nobody wants to see a bloody organ / but that is just what every heart is. / but mine was made to be regifted, / because it was unwanted / by myself / because it was made to be used / by everyone else. /

//

then, / you will vomit a little from the sight, / but you will try to hide it / you will throw my heart in the trash, / as if it had never existed. / you will silently show me out, / and delete my number / as if it had never existed, too. /

//

the next day, / someone else will come over your place. / they will wish you a happy belated birthday, / because they just got home from their pricey vacation / paid for by their elderly parents; / the flight was delayed / and they're so sorry— / 'it's the worst thing / that has ever happened to me' / they will cry out.

//

you will make love to them, they will fuck you. / they will give you a tiny, store-bought gift— a heart-shape-shaped card / that is not shaped like a real heart / and is certainly not as heavy as one. /

//

you will gladly accept it / and rejoice.
