I actually had this plan to reread one book a month leading up to IBH. I started back in march (so that I would be finished by july and that way have over a month to build up hype) and when I finished CC I couldn't control myself and ended up rereading all five books in a couple of weeks...

That’s a great plan, I can see how you had a hard time sticking to it though. The books are too good 😂

LightningRaven•

I'll have to read it, because I actually never reread it except Lethal White, prior to reading Troubled Blood.

My most recent contact with this series has been through the TV show, which cut down a lot of the character drama of the series.

This is probably going to take a while because I'm a bit swamped right now because I'm working and studying, so my reading time has been significantly cut down and when I have free time I'm either doing stuff for college or watching something that lets me rest my mind a bit.

8
spreadjoy34OP•

The beauty of books is that they’re always there whenever you’re ready ☺️

9
LightningRaven•

Absolutely. And great books always give you something new with rereads.

That's why I like the Cormoran Strike series so much, they're much more complex than the overall "Whodunnit" structure would lead one to believe.

It's like my favorite series in a sense. The Dresden Files is about an investigator wizard going in all these crazy cases full of action, goofy comedy and funny/dumb one liners, but there's a surprising amount of depth to its world and characters.

6
spreadjoy34OP•

I don’t think I’ve ever read a mystery series that gets better the more you reread it. JKR is a genius. I’m so grateful to be reading these books as they’re coming out!

I’ve heard the Dresden Files are really good. I’ll have to check them out.

I’ve heard the Dresden Files are really good. I’ll have to check them out.

Some people don't like the first few books, I personally do, but the series only gets better the further you go. The main character is also very flawed and some people can't see past his flaws and end up DNF'ing the books, however if you get what the author is going for and understand/ignore the main character's flaws, then you're probably in for a treat (The main character is modeled after those old school noir detectives and with their major flaws as well).

spreadjoy34OP•

I may work in a rewatch of the shows too. The first time I watched, I was iffy on it but I really love them now.

4
PoorEdith•

Other: I book journal and include detailed summaries, so I'm going to read all of them prior to Ink Black Heart. I'd love to reread them all but I just had a baby and that isn't happening, haha.

7
spreadjoy34OP•

I should have had an “other” category. Sorry about that! Your book journals sound amazing. What a cool thing to do. Do you do that for all the books you read?

5
PoorEdith•

Oh you're good! I started journaling in 11th grade and I'm 35 now, haha. I do almost all of them, yup. Not textbooks or some of the assigned readings I had for college, but everything else! I summarize and review, include notable quotes, a rating out of 10 and list why I selected the book to begin with. I realized when I was 15 I was rereading things I'd forgotten about (I used to read so much!) and this seemed like a good way to keep track. I enjoy reading really old entries and it's fun to see how many books I've gotten through every year. And it comes in sooo handy when a new book in a series is released!

3
spreadjoy34OP•

Wow 🤩 That is so awesome. I wish I’d been doing that all these years!

3
PoorEdith•

Thanks! I would encourage you to try it, no time like the present!

I recommend the audiobooks! They’re fantastic and baby friendly!

I have to commute to work, so I decided I’m going to listen to the books. I’m so excited for book 6!!

lubsyb•

They are SO good. Robert Glenister IS Strike to me.

5
spreadjoy34OP•

He’s amazing!!!

lwyrprncss•

I’ve done a full re-listen since the end of February and it’s been such a comfort. Also really fun to listen while knowing the answer so I can pick up on clues. Finished TB on Friday. A bit sad but going to try to enjoy some other things for the next couple months!

I need to find all of my books, but I plan to reread to Troubled Blood.

5
IlSconosciuto•

I have already started this and have 300 pages left of troubled blood.

5
spreadjoy34OP•

Nice, you’re almost finished!

1
ItIsAContest•

Thanks for including us audiobook “readers” too!

5
spreadjoy34OP•

Of course! I’m a massive audiobook fan myself.

3
Lost-Fruit-5939•

I've just started the audiobook thing. Listening to TB now, but having some trouble with the Cornish accent for Strike. Did you get over it? Maybe because I saw the tv series before I even heard of the books and Burke is my go to voice for Strike.

2
spreadjoy34OP•

I listened to the first audiobook before the shows were released. But I see the shows, books, and audiobooks as separate things. I get a lot out of each separately.

Being an audiobook reader is such a talent and Robert Glenister is one of the best (there are a lot of bad narrators out there…). I would say to try to separate the art forms if possible and keep listening.

I’m not an expert on different English accents though, so maybe someone else will have different insight.

3
Lost-Fruit-5939•

This is good advice re the audio, because I do separate the books from the tv adaptation. Sometimes I do try to mesh them together, but that gets confusing.

Triple the pleasure!

2

relistening here! Just finished with chapter 40 of COE- One of my favorites ♥️

This is an excellent chapter 😍🥰

I’ll reread everything but career of evil. Something about that one in particular really put me off and I don’t know why 🤷🏻‍♂️

4
spreadjoy34OP•

I used to feel that way about The Silkworm. Took me years to reread it, but I enjoyed it that time. I think I enjoyed seeing the development of Strike and Robin.

3
Dachsy18•

I listen to the audiobooks and always skip the parts that are from the murderers perspective in CoE, they’re to gruesome for me, especially when no longer looking for clues. This makes CoE the book I’ve relistened to the least times because I have to skip all the time.

3
pelican_girl•

I feel like I'm already saturated in Strike content. It's to the point where my comments here are becoming increasingly repetitive and occasionally fringe. Need a new book--stat!

I did a disciplined reread of all the books a while back when I realized my selective rereading was skewing my understanding and overlooking potential clues. There's a line from East of Eden where a character observes that his wife "wears down a Bible evenly." Not I! My Strike bibles are tattered in some places and nearly pristine in others.

At this point, I think I'll just trust that JKR will steer me in the right direction with whatever points she reinforces in the new book.

4
Lost-Fruit-5939•

We can only hope JKR will steer us in the "right" direction!

3
spreadjoy34OP•

Yes, I’m definitely ready for some new content as well!

3
voldysgonemoldy7•

I just finished them all last week

3
-Sugarholic-•

Re-listening whole series. I already started a few days ago.

3
New_Photo8830•

I’ve actually already re-listened to the whole Series again. It was amazing how much I had forgotten. Plus I rewatched all the TV seasons.

3
spreadjoy34OP•

It is amazing how much is in these books. Plus I think some things are much more important when you have the context of later events. These books reward rereaders!

2
gokjib•

I just learned the next book is coming out soon right now! So yes, I have a commute again since my office wants us in 3 days a week so I’ll re-listen to the audio books.

3
spreadjoy34OP•

It’s a great use of commute time!

1
factorialite•

I just re-listened to all of them and did it too quickly, so now I have to wait a couple months.

3
Detective_Dietrich•

Already read them a couple months ago for my survey of weird British English in the Strike novels.

3
spreadjoy34OP•

That sounds fun. Learn anything cool? I always come across some words and pop culture references that I need to lookup.

3
Detective_Dietrich•

I did. I'm going to start a new thread and link to the old one when "The Ink Black Heart" comes out. At one point Robin eats a "plowman's" for lunch and I found myself wondering what the hell that is, and it's this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ploughman%27s_lunch

Stuff like that.

Here it is, if you're curious:

Another fan of the dictionary here. I'm British so it's interesting to see what Americans find unusual. I've added some comments for the ones you were unsure of!

3
Detective_Dietrich•

Excellent, it's awesome to get feedback.

2
Lost-Fruit-5939•

I love your dictionary of British slang! There were quite a few that I just skimmed over while reading, but most I tried to look up. can't wait to see the list for TIBH.

Cheers!

2
spreadjoy34OP•

This is awesome. I read through the whole thread. I can’t wait to see your IBH one.

2
Unaha-Closp•

I just finished my re-read of all 5 novels. Not sure it made the wait any more tolerable for book 6 but here we are.
