The Night

Poem

Lately I’ve been in my mind, lost to my supposed destiny

My intent for greatness, my desire for notoriety

I curl up on the beach, and my fingers clutch the sand

And there I will sob desperately, and hold them in my hand

And to myself I wonder, why do all the grains flow senselessly? Is this all there is to life, one battle won when just the next I see

Comes up on the horizon, a hovering cloud

A miasma is what’s coming dear, a storm will touch the ground

Rage, rage, against the night

The titan’s grip is not so tight, the titan’s grip

You’ll fight, you’ll fight, you’ll fight

The waves they will crash thunderously

And I will fight against the Titan’s clasp

In his grip, what strength will come to me

And the grains they will fall still

Like a sieve out of my grasp

Rage, rage, against the night

The titan’s grip is not so tight, the titan’s grip

You’ll fight, you’ll fight, you’ll fight

If greatness comes to those who wait then why still do I lie

All you need is love, they say, and you just have to try

Try to find your strength, the will to fight

Try and try and try and try

My destiny, I ache to find

Caught up in the memory, of a truly spotless mind

Eternal sunshine starts with you

In that light, I praise the shadows

For always, always, being kind

I want to fight

I love how you used rage against the night as a homage to Dylan Thomas. It reminds me of a battle people in Australia are having since money grabbing realtors and builders put homes on flood plains. Every time they clean up the rains and floods returns. I hope you and me both find our destiny ;)

Really enjoyed the references you made here, I see the Edgar Allen Poe and Dylan Thomas. I feel the urge to rage (:

I am totally new to reading poetry and totally new to writing poetry. Thank you for this poem. I really like this line: "If greatness comes to those who wait then why still do I lie" its so relatable and really brings light to the world we live in and the lies we are fed.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

This has a lot of potential and draws some really beautiful metaphors! I don't have time to write a full comment right now but just wanted to give you the quick spell check for 'siv' (sieve). Really great job, I enjoyed reading it! Also just a heads up, I'm not a mod in this sub but the rules are to link to two pieces of feedback and there's only one so it could get removed

Thank you! (also I'm super grateful for the spell check, no wonder why google kept red lining me)

The phrase "Rage, rage, against the night" reminds me a lot of "Do not go gentle into that good night" by Dylan Thomas.

And from what I can gather in this poem, there is a conflict of interest between rebellion but also some form of repression or stigma.

It seems that the person is in the midst of a storm, an existential crisis of sorts, or perhaps a time where the person just wants to get out or run away.

While at the same time, there is something deep inside that is stopping him/her from going all the way and taking that leap of faith.

Am I correct?

Yes! There were quite a few references in here actually! The main one being Edgar Allen Poe's "Dream Within a Dream". I love your analysis, it's definitely accurate to my intention while writing. :) Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it.
