Who Could Not See This Miniature Naming Drama in /r/sigmarxism?

The Thread: "omg it's just satire guys. btw, dae wonder why this fandom have such a big nazi problem?"

The contentious issue of whether or not Games Workshop's Heinrich Kemmler is named after infamous Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler is brought to the fore in this burgeoning thread of tabletop wargaming enthusiasts.

Heinrich Kemmler is also a reference to Heinrich Himmler.

With great certainty, assertions are made.

So thats where we are now ? We see a german name and we scream "omg GW nazi" ?

But, some are having none of it.

We're discussing a game whose lore features fantasy Italian characters named "Gossippa Lotta" and "Brazino Innuendo".

Counterpunches are thrown!

Yes it's the Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka = Margaret Thatcher debate all over again.

Mag Uruk Thraka = Margaret Thatcher

Okay, that's pretty great. I looked it up, and apparently one of the people who worked on 40k clarified that Mag Uruk Thraka was not, in fact, named after Margaret Thatcher.

To which my response is: mhmmm, riiiiiight.

I'm sure that the lads from the Midlands that created this property in the middle of the 80s at no point considered naming a brutish Ork warlord after Margaret Thatcher. The nickname of 'The Iron Ork' is, of course, also entirely coincidental.

It's not that clear-cut. Heinrich Kemmler, or the Lichemaster, is a vile necromancer who has amassed the second-largest library of forbidden lore in the setting. He may be named after Heinrich Himmler (a Nazi politician known to be an amateur occultist) or, alternatively, Heinrich Kramer, the author of the Malleus Maleficarum, the best known treatise on witchcraft.

Or - and this is the most likely explanation - Games Workshop, a company never known for complexity or subtlety in naming things, literally just picked a name that sounded unique, vaguely sinister, and plausible for the setting.

Case in point: their most popular product, the Space Marines, are officially called the "Adeptus Astartes." Was GW's choice of that name for their exclusively male superhuman warrior-monks intended as a reference to the Canaanite sex goddess? Probably not.

70
AlternativeEmphasis•

I seriously would bet that it is Kramer as well, the Maellus Maleficarum, also known as Hammer of the Witches, is also referenced by the official name of the Inqusitional Daemonhunters. The Ordo Malleus. Whose rallying cry is "We are the hammer!" GW is obviously familiar with Kramer and his work.

In addition, a lot of pop cultures' ideas of how witch hunts went on are massively influenced by Kramer's work.

40
TH3_B3ANTherefore hydrogen bombs should be free. I will not elaborate•

There is quite literally a named Great Cannon in Warhammer Fantasy called "The Hammer of the Witches". They are definitely aware of Kramer.

13
fartemous_foul•

The "most likely" explanation actually seems the least likely to me. If they accidentally named their character directly after a Nazi it would be a relatively easy mistake to fix. Just change it in future publications and on the Wiki. I get the feeling that would be enough for Warhammer fans.

And Canaanite sex goddesses are much less commonly known than Nazi politicians.

My friend, you do not seem to have met many Warhammer fans.

And Canaanite sex goddesses are much less commonly known than Nazi politicians.

The point I was making is that GW grabs its names from everywhere and its choices usually aren't subtle or deep.

Other examples:

  1. Balthasar Gelt - an alchemist in a gold mask whose name means "Bart Money"

  2. Malus Darkblade - an evil elf with a cursed sword whose name means "Badguy Evilsword"

  3. Gossipa Lotta - a noblewoman who gossips a lot

  4. Lord Kroak - a dead frog

  5. Tiktac'to - a Lizardman master strategist who is literally named "tic-tac-toe"

These are not subtle. Warhammer has dozens and hundreds of named characters and places in it and frankly, when you're worldbuilding on that scale, you pick up names from anywhere. Coming up with names is hard sometimes. Not everyone is like Tolkien, a gifted linguist who invented fictional languages to derive all his proper nouns from.

Hammer_of_Light•

I feel like whoever named the character would have to be nearly braindead to A) not know who Himmler was, B) not be aware of the way it would be interpreted, and C) choose something that sounds like "Himmler" rather than "Kramer".

Maybe they technically named the character after someone else, but you can't convince me they didn't know what they were doing.

16
BastardofMelbourne•

Honestly, it's a stretch, just because apart from the occultist angle, nothing connects Heinrich Kemmler to Heinrich Himmler. He's not like, Warhammer Fantasy's version of a Nazi; he's an evil necromancer most well-known for his sidekick, a wight named Krell who was once a Chaos warlord. He hangs around in the Warhammer equivalent of the Alps collecting books to fill out his library. He's a very basic "evil wizard" character.

Literally the only thing that makes people connect the Nazi angle is the fact that his surname is roughly similar in the same way Yorkshire and Berkshire are roughly similar. It's a very bare thread.

20
Hammer_of_Light•

I'm not sure why it requires an occultist angle, but it's a self-defeating argument regardless, as Himmler was a noted occultist. Google it. Nothing has to "connect" here.

And I'm sorry, it's not at all only roughly similar, and an accurate analogy would be Yorkshire/Borkshire. Phonetically they're indistinguishable except for the beginning letter.

Could be a mix of Heinrich Kramer and Himmler?

13
DarknessWizard Question 1: Does an elf count as bestiality?•

Kemmler is most likely named after Heinrich Kramer, the dude who wrote the Malleus Malificarum, which is basically an incel screed on how to find "witches" (and started the witch hunts) but in practice was an angry rant because Kramer got kicked out of a village for trying to get a woman arrested over something utterly insignificant.

He's also basically a straight up villain; he's a BBEG necromancer from literally the oldest rpg campaign of Fantasy and is GWs first special character for WHFB.

His sole redeeming factor is opposing Arkhan, because Arkhans master is Nagash and... fucking everyone hates Nagash because he's basically the worst thing in the setting besides Chaos (and unlike Chaos, Nagash doesn't have the excuse of being a force of nature).

I wouldn't, at least not about me. Ain't my fault these people can't understand something unless you plaster a big fucking disclaimer in the middle of the screen saying "THESE ARE NAZIS, THEY ARE THE BAD PEOPLE".

Just cause nazis are fucking stupid and will latch onto anything that portrays them doesn't mean we can't portray them at all.

Then again i've never played Warhammer 40K, but from what i've heard they're almost always portrayed as the bad guys right?

32
Illogical_BloxFat ginger cryptokike mutt, Malka-esque weirdo, and quasi-SJW•

This is about Warhammer Fantasy, as it happens. Kemmler, however, is definitely a really bad dude and depicted as such. The witch hunters of Fantasy are generally depicted as bad people even if they are sometimes rooting out Chaos cults. Although there's not a ton of lore around them, IIRC there is at least one instance of a sorcerer turning to Chaos and making the problem way worse because of them.

30
arathorn3•

As someone how has never gotten into the fantasy side of War hammer but plays 40k, the witch hunters are the Fantasy equivalent to the 40k Inquistion, correct?.

If so they are bad people mostly but get a lot of page time because the writers know its easier to tell stories from the point of view of regular humans than from Space Msrines(genetically altered superhuman warrior monks) or for Fantasy equivalent Stormcast Eternals(reincarinated warriors who lose a bit of their humanity every time they are brought back).

Its why the Eisenhorn trilogy is often recommended as the best place to start reading 40k novels. gregor Eisenhorn is not a good person, but Inquisitors are the detectivea of the setting do its a great way to introduce readers to the concepts of 40k.

8
Illogical_BloxFat ginger cryptokike mutt, Malka-esque weirdo, and quasi-SJW•

AFAIK witch hunters are basically the fantasy equivalent, BUT Fantasy didn't have Stormcast Eternals, that's Age of Sigmar, the spiritual and literal successor to Fantasy. Warhammer Fantasy was almost entirely normal people, at least on the human side. From a brief skim and the reading I've done, witch hunters didn't really show up that much.

6
arathorn3•

From what I have heard GW is in the process of bring back old school Fantasy as the Old World., Warhammer youtuber Chapter Master Valrak has been hyped for it for awhile because he can play his old Bretonian army when it final happens.

I play 40k, Horus hereay and MESBG(Middle Earth strategy battle) of the GW products Dark Angels in 40k and Rangers of Ithilien legendary legion/Minus Tirith in Middle Earth. I also play Hail Caesar (historical wargame) so 4 armies and 4 sets of rules is enough to get me busy and give me variety, though horus heresy and 40k are really not too different, Heresy being based on 7th edition 40k rules.

3
angry_cucumberneed citation are the catch words for lefties•

Then again i've never played Warhammer 40K, but from what i've heard they're almost always portrayed as the bad guys right?

My understanding is every faction is some level of xenophobic, fascist, genocidal or just plain psychotic.

I think needing to make it very fucking clear the bad guys are evil is why Disney has taken the Empire from obviously the bad guys to just like, cartoony evil that's been destroying planets and genociding since before day one.

I feel like the creator of the game has to have spoken about the naming conventions, where they drew inspiration from. Why speculate? Just look to the creator.

9
DarknessWizard Question 1: Does an elf count as bestiality?•

The problem is that GW has been ran over the years by about 40 variations of "that kid", usually together. You know. That kid who let you play with his action figures but he'd be the one to make sure his figures would always win.

This makes it very difficult to point at any one single creator for any specific writing element (and nowadays is impossible because GW doesn't even put their EICs on the covers of their books anymore after Matt Ward got a ton of hate mail for certain writing decisions involving the ultrasmurfs that he was considered responsible for -partially due to some really bad answers he gave in interviews-).

It's also resulted in the entire canon of Warhammer being a giant convoluted mess (40k has it admittedly far worse to the point where some executive at some point handwaved the retcons with "everything we write is written as if it were imperium propaganda, take it with a grain of salt") with very few clear inspirations besides the glaringly obvious.

Warhammer fantasy was never quite as bad as 40k until age of sigmar, which is the sequel/soft reboot, which from what I can tell has been riddled with similar messy stuff your find in 40k.

22
shutyourtimemouth•

There’s not really one creator you can do that with, there were a couple guys back in the 80s but all of them have subsequently left the company and now the game is managed by committee with probably dozens of different people adding things without talking to each other and whose public announcements about the game have to make sure not to piss of their bosses or the marketing department

9
saint-somniaFuck you, but G-Rated•

I’m only vaguely familiar with Warhammer through a friend, so I’m not sure how old the series is, but tbh I find that society is getting worse at recognizing satire these days. What might have been more obviously satire back when warhammer was made probably flies over peoples heads today, and the people making it don’t seem to register that. Of course, I could be talking out my ass, who knows ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

People have always been incredibly bad at recognizing satire, just look at Starship Troopers. The film could not possibly be more on the nose and blatant about being a satire but was still panned on release for being supposed fascist propaganda. People to this day think the book is promoting the failed system that it depicts as losing at every turn.

20
Jamoras•

The book is actually fascist. The movie is satire

15
SpeaksDwarrengo make another cringe tiktok shit bird•

Is it? The society it depicts fails at every turn. They don't accomplish a single thing they set out to do and very blatantly are in a losing situation at the end when they retry to invade the same place they failed spectacularly at, but this time with less men, less ships, and without the tactical advantage they wanted to get from a captured queen because, you know, they failed horribly at capturing one.

Generally when I read an advocation of something they try to actually make it look good, but in this case, they lose repeatedly to the Communist-analogue bugs. It's worth noting that Heinlein was himself a socialist and an anarchist.

3†
MisterDuch•

The plethora of weird anti democracy and pro fascism/military government rants throughout the book makes me think the author intended it to be a praise of fascism.

And remember, the federation from the books is a bit more competent, while the arachnids threat is a bigger problem due to their advanced tech

13
greald•

Heinlein wrote Troopers as an opposition to the US suspending above ground testing of nuclear weapons.

And while He was a soft democtrat in his younger days he was certaintly not anything resembling a socialist or an anarchist when he died.

He was probably only second to Ayn Rand in promoting the American very right wing version of libertarianism.

His later books are basicly The Fountainhead level libertarien screeds and about as well written as Rands worst. Although in his defence he did have a brain tumour when he wrote his later works.
