see you soon.
i’m learning to make my love less like a cage and more like a fire place, with blankets and pillows piled on the floor
( do you remember when we used to build pillow forts in the living room and leave them up for weeks?)
i do not say <<don’t leave me>> but <<come back>>
i do not claw at their backs, leaving bloody streaks of hurt and fear but i do linger in the warmth of their atmosphere
(you don’t like hugs. i don’t like not hugging. i’ll let you win this time. )
when it’s time to say goodbye , i say <<travel safely. call me when you get there. >>
there is no need for desperation.
(i remember you crying into your hands. i’d never seen someone so desperate for something. i’m so proud of you.)
they’ll leave and make new friends and see new places
(don’t like them too much, okay?)
they’ll make mistakes and cry and think about home
(i know you’re scared. you’ll do great anyways. )
and then, one day, they’ll come back and sit in my flickering fire, warm to the bone with memories and laughter and promises of the future
(i already miss you. see you soon. )
