Adrift
In restless waters a pebble stirs,
a thousand thumbs at work upon its shape,
buffeted by the shifting currents,
thrust through rusting shafts, tumbling,
flung like copper down a well,
so that it can not rest
its tired lump upon the shoal
or find a home there
among the silent drifting motes,
ensconced in some conch corridor,
and let the waves slip
over in their ever-breaking tide.
For even there it chafes
against the nacre,
obeying the rhythm
of its deep-sea chamber.
