God Bless Dogs
These nauseating and tormenting questions,
Like the humiliating empty spaces of a puzzle - such is a heartache.
I rattle its tiny pieces in my hand,
pondering at the gaps,
My suspicions against facts.
Could this? Maybe.
Is this? No. Then,
Rolling thunder from the hall
I hear the clinks and clanks of a chain,
Tiny nails against the hardwood floor.
Like a spiraling football, she leaps into my lap.
The pieces,
Now scattered about the floor.
With dull doll eyes, she looks up at me and I think,
I don’t care anymore.
