a moment in october in the park
I can remember, recalling through leaf-filtered
sunlight--the autumnal tang,
how you took starlight from me,
our bodies supine, parallel to the world, reckless
against 1AM's biting cold,
letting the blackness of the pock-marked
night fill our vision past its edges.
I can remember how you took
my enjoyment of the Sunflower, its radiating
corona, a symbol for life & vibrancy?
Now it walks with me everywhere,
I see it in their atrophied stalks,
stems reckless against the waxing cold,
a symbol for our death, of cyclic fading away?
And though I am no stranger to taking
things myself, indiscriminate in my hoarding
of all things I perceive to be as love.
Now I find a kinship in the bobbing
of petal-less heads, atop deadened stalks,
nodding in a cold wind,
an affirmation of loss surmounting.
