Watching
Dead leaves crunch
beneath my white keds.
The golden sun of days end
reaches out to touch
my face, the tangible light
clings to the sky,
blinds my eyes.
I am being tracked along
the passage between
houses. Despite
the warm October wind,
there is an icy chill
of a gaze sweeping by.
The hovering evergreens
will soon know
the weight of snow.
Sidewalks converge
with pumpkins on porches,
demons watching
from doorways, shadows
follow behind long with gloom.
Does he know I am a child?
He’s hidden in his devil's costume.
Menacing eyes peering over
broken white fences. I knock
on the neighbours door,
no one answers,
night falls.
