My High Horse

Poem

tried to ride my high horse today

but in the grass he’d only lay

tricked him up onto his feet

with an apple flavored treat

to the post he was tied

time to saddle up and ride

a guilty grin with droopy eyes

simply to saddle took several tries

of course, he wouldn’t take his bit

triggered a smoker’s coughing fit

a stallion with dependencies

doesn’t cooperate with ease

In the pasture he will stay

Guess I won’t be riding my high horse today

I love your rhymes and word play. I feel there's a deeper meaning here but I can't figure it out

Thanks!

Inspired by a former boss of mine who once told me "DON'T GET ON YOUR HIGH HORSE WITH ME BOY!" And of course this was the idea of my high horse. Couldn't get on it if I even tried! Oh Well, not really a deeper meaning, just a back story! :)

The analogy with the horse and all of its character is spot on. Enjoyed this a lot.

This struck me. Sometimes when I try to better myself or 'ride a high horse' it's easy and I feel good about myself. Other times I succumb to my temptations with a 'guilty grin.' I also liked the 'smokers coughing fit' line. As someone trying to quit the habit I can relate lol. Great imagery too

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.
