The Bodhi Leaf
Great Bodhi dropped her leaves. They fell silently to ground,
They joined the ones who fell before, and others falling 'round.
The Buddha sat in silence. A leaf, attached to his bald head.
He didn't move a muscle. He contemplated the leaf, instead....
This leaf was once a sapling. Rooted, waiting to be freed
Before it ever fell to Earth, to plant anew a seed.
Then suddenly it hit him. That he is like the leaf.
He'd been a child, a man, would be a corpse, who would leave the world in grief...
None of those states was all of him, nor was their sum, in kind
He came to see the bodhi leaves adrift within the mind.
