Hi allerseits,

Hi everyone,

I'm in my late 20s and for the last two years, I worked for Apple's enterprise support in Ireland after getting a BA in history and political sciences (don't ask...).

I'm currently doing an IHK Ausbildung (verkürzt) that takes two years and ends with the Berufsbezeichnung 'Fachinformatiker für Anwendungsentwicklung'. But honestly, I hate 80% of it.

It's funded by the Arbeitsamt, so I'm sharing a tiny Schulungsraum with 12 obese chain smokers who haven't worked in half a decade and constantly interrupt the classes with lewd jokes and shitty stories about their shitty children. We use antiquated computers and the instructors just take the piss half of the time.

I started six

About a month ago, I lamented the theft of my favourite backpack on r/malefashionadvice

Not being able to get a replacement outside of the US, I asked you guys if you could help me find something similar in Europe.

You had some good suggestions, but a rep from the designers of the original backpack, Everlane, messaged me offering to send me one:

No idea where to start, to be honest...

Hi all,

a friend of mine brought this from a US trip because she knew I had trouble finding a backpack I liked.

It was the perfect backpack for me and I used it every day. It got mistreated a good bit, a bottle of bleach opened inside, it took a fair beating when I had a bit of a tumble of my bike, etc. Finally it got stolen in the Dublin Luas.

I'd love to find something similar: https://www.everlane.com/collections/mens-all-accessories/products/mens-twill-backpack-reverse-denim-black-leather

Could you help me find something similar in European e-stores?

Or even give me words how I can describe this. The closing mechanism where you use strings to close it, with the flap over it, how wo

Hi all,

my last Android phone was a Galaxy S+, so I'm a bit out of the loop.

Can you give me a resource where I can filter phones for features?

I want to know if there are any phones that have a USB C connector and is also water proof. Does that exist?

Hi all,

so I'm trying to follow some steps to convert a .java file to a .class file. That step works, but the next step, executing that java file, doesn't.

On my desktop, there are two files:

Hello.java (which I converted with the javac-command to): Hello.class

I'm a Linux and coding newb, so I'm having trouble even understanding what the issue is:

getting the following error message:

Error: Could not find or load main class Hello

First I checked if I even had Java installed properly with

java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_111"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_111-8u111-b14- 2ubuntu0.16.04.2-b14)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.111-b14, mixed m

Hi everyone,

I am using Wine to play a game from 2005 and I feel I should be getting better performance. Maybe I'm expecting too much from my Celeron processor (Dell CB 13), or maybe there's a setting I could tweak. The FPS average around 50, which would be okay, but they dip below 20 frequently with short freezes.

The ingame graphics settings don't seem to make much of a difference. That makes me suspect that this isn't a CPU limitation, or at least not a GPU one.

Are there any tweaks you recommend? I found the Wine settings application, but I can't find anything that sounds like it would affect performance.

Hi everyone,

I realise this is a website by Americans for Americans, but I know that there are a lot of Europeans here as well, so I think it's fair to ask:

I started doing the ''full stack" path on codecademy, assuming that these guys have a pretty good idea about what technologies and languages are en vogue right now. What I didn't consider is that there might be regional differences in language adoption.

So I'm wondering, did you notice any differences in which languages are used in Europe, specifically Switzerland, compared to the US of A?

My feeling is, when looking at courses and job listings, that the whole Ruby / Ruby on Rails thing didn't really take off in this part of Europe.

I honestly don't know where to start. Running GalliumOS on my Chromebook has just been an all around treat.

I bought a Celeron Dell Chromebook 13 for 300 Euros, added bigger SSD and that 370 Euro machine replaced my Macbook.

This OS makes getting into Linux so easy. Everything is straight forward, the window management puts OSX to shame, the battery life is insanity, there are even options within the OS to remove that annoying mouse acceleration.

Again, what a treat.
