I was curious if anyone have developed or include a laboratory experiment for General Chemistry based on environmental (Green) chemistry and/or recycling plastic. This comes out of reading the article on plastics from C&ENews (6-18-18), Added to the fact that my campus has started (restarted) a green initiative to recycle plastics and covering for the first time Environmental Chemistry (Ch. 18-Brown & LeMay). Thanks.

I will be teaching organic in the fall. Scary, because I'm not an organic chemist.

In reviewing possible labs for the semester, I found the Diels-Alder reaction of maleic anhydride with the diene from eucalyptus oil. In the procedures, it mentions that a diene represents the largest peak in the GC. The only problem is that 1,8-cineole is the largest peak in the GC. 1,8-cineole is not a diene but a bicyclic ether. Is a diene formed in the reaction from 1,8-cineole and then the DA reactions takes place?

Thanks for the help.

Today is May the Fourth (Star Wars Day) and the servers are down. They should change the bosses to Darth Vaders.

Okay, maybe it is a copyright issue, but it would be funny.

Morning Sewing, I am posting this question to help my mother. I may have to edit the post to answer some questions.

She was sewing a pattern (embroidery) and the machine stopped without finishing.

I (and she) would appreciate any help and suggestions.

I am looking over jobs on the internet and see a lot of instructor positions. How much do instructors get paid versus professors? I am most interested in the Southeast United States.

I know that the show is not perfect for the science. But in last night's episode they mentioned that Amy cleaned her glassware with chromic acid and acetic acid. Is that possible?

I was thinking chromic acid with sulfuric acid and therefore it would oxide the acetic acid. But with a quick google search, I did find evidence of CrO3 in acetic acid as an organic reagent.

Also, they may have called it chromate.

PS: I am overthinking a TV show and need Fall break.

I have the exciting opportunity to teach chemistry in China this summer. I am an American citizen with no Chinese background. I am curious if anyone has ever had this experience or have heard of someone's experience in teaching in China (or another country). A professor from Korea who is teaching at my undergrad said that they are not interested in the chemistry, but in the English as it relates to chemistry.

In May, I (50 M) started on my quest to lose some weight. Starting out at 317. So far, I have lost 30 pounds. I would love to get down to 200 (or at least until the WiiFit quits telling me "That's obese"). I have been doing Medifast, it has worked for me in the past, but I did not watch what I ate when I got off of it. I am thinking about going to a Keto/Atkins diets. My biggest problem is that I don't see it if I look into the mirror. As I told someone, I went from very, very, very, very obese to very, very, very obese.
Also, how do you get the [-30 lbs] by your name?
