Note: I drafted this proposal with the help of an AI assistant, but the core ideas, structure, and synthesis are mine. I used AI as a brainstorming and editing partner, not as the author

Problem As AI systems approach superhuman performance in reasoning, creativity, and autonomy, current alignment techniques are insufficient. Today, alignment is largely handled by individual firms, each applying its own definitions of safety, bias, and usefulness. There is no global consensus on what misalignment means, no independent verification that systems are aligned, and no transparent metrics that governments or citizens can trust. This creates an unacceptable risk: frontier AI may advance faster tha

Hey all.

I’m struggling.

But then I sat down to write a post for this subreddit and it helped me make sense of things. I reclassified it as a journal entry. LOL. I really wish that regular journaling was a common practice for me.

Anyways, I guess this is me saying thanks to you all for forcing me to think through it.

Have a safe and joyful holiday!

I’ve been a software engineer for almost two decades. Recently, I’ve been seriously considering freelancing but have a few big concerns holding me back. A fellow dev here challenged me to create a post to share what’s on my mind and ask for advice from those of you who’ve made the leap.

Here are my main worries:

  1. Finding Work

How do you find consistent work as a freelancer? I know platforms like Upwork and Toptal exist, but they seem hyper-competitive. Are there better ways to build a client base, especially for someone with experience but not a well-known personal brand? How do you handle the uncertainty of contracts ending and the potential for dry spells?

  1. Benefits

Background

I recently had to start using a new docker base image at work. I then realized that it didn't have things that I expected to be there.

Cool Thing

Have you ever found yourself in a new docker image that uses a base image you’re unfamiliar with?

Use find without actually using find (and without using another programming language like python, perl, or ruby), because someone decided not to include it in the base image and you don’t want to have to update your own Dockerfile:

$ docker run --rm --entrypoint /bin/bash $DOCKER_IMAGE -c -l '(for f in /path/you/think/the/file/is/in/**/* ; do echo $f; done) | grep -i "file you are looking for"'

For background:

  • I have written software professionally since 2008.
  • I have mostly worked in big tech.
  • I have for the last 10 years been mostly a systems/db/distributed systems developer
  • I have also been a SRE

Here's what I am seeing now:

  • This job market is hard.
  • Your job is probably harder now due to $REASONS
  • You don't really have an easy out (unless you do), so you're gonna have to stay the course for the foreseeable future.

Here's what I want to communicate to everyone here:

Its going to be OK. If you need to get a different job to put food on the table, then do it. At the end of the day, you work to provide for yourself and the ones you love. Put a smile on

Hey all. Here's what I want to do: I want to redirect from https://subdomain.foo.com/bar => https://foo.internal.company.com/bar. I am told that this is likely to be possible with istio via the following: virtual service, gateway, and dummy cert with subject alt name that matches both domains. The requests are coming from inside the eks cluster and from pods that all have istio sidecar attached.

I'm struggling with:

  1. Should this even work?
  2. Do I need other things?
  3. I've been tailing the ingress proxy pod logs as well as the troubleshooting pod istio-proxy sidecar logs and its unclear when or if it is trying to redirect the traffic or if its trying to terminate TLS/SSL.

Hey all. Some background: I (42m) am married for almost 20 years with two kids (10f and 12m), I have a full time job in tech (self-taught in software engineering in big tech) and last year I re-committed myself to getting my two year associates in science (physics+math focus).

I now have 25 credits and a 4.0 GPA. But, I’ll be honest, after one year and doing summer quarter twice, I had hoped to be further along. I have been taking just one five credit class per quarter. As I have just finished my second summer quarter, I find myself wondering why I’m not taking two classes at once. I often take classes in person, but also found success with an online math course over this last summe

Hey fellow Physics students. I wanted to start a thread here to see if anyone else wants to share about that moment when they started seeing themselves as a scientist (or mathematician, or chemist, etc). I'll go first.

I got my grade back from my professor in my current math class. This was the first time I had had to write an actual document in response to an assignment for a math class. Looking back, it felt more like a paper than it did a Math assignment. I didn't do well, IMO (82/100). After some discomfort about the grade, I took stock of what the feedback was all about. It turns out that I needed to have slowed down, make sure that I read the original language of the problem carefully

Hey all.

I hope this inquiry finds you well.

I am looking for a logger that can do the following:

  • Structured logging
  • Nothing more than what I want (message, timestamp, additional kwargs as specified) -- i.e. no icons or other fancy things like you might see in structured logging output from Loguru.
  • Ability to redact secrets in said logging messages given a known set of secrets
  • iso8601 timestamps with zimezone showing (e.g. 2024-05-11T11:44:01Z

Here's one way that I found while engaging chatgpt:

import logging
import json
from datetime import datetime, timezone

class RedactingFormatter(logging.Formatter):
    def __init__(self, secrets, *args, **kwargs):
        sup
