I have retired a few years early due to ill health.

I have just about enough in savings to scrape by until the state pension kicks in. I also have a small DB pension (about £8k a year) and a moderate private pension pot. Long term I hope to survive mainly on the state + DB pension, and draw down the private pension as and when needed (house repairs etc).

Up until I retire, I will have no income. Does it make sense for me to draw money out of my private pension each year and use that ratherthan savings? So as to take advantage of my unused personal allowance over the next few years?

I understand that I can draw 25% tax free. Would I need to do that first, or could I withdraw money taxed no

I have a static site, literally just a bunch of HTML, PNG, files and a CSS file. Up until now I have been hosting on an old style shared host. I've also had it running on a basic LAMP stack on a DigitalOcean droplet.

There are quite a few files, many in subdirectories.

I have tried to get it running on Amplify, naively thinking I could just upload all the files and it would work.

I can navigate the pages in the site, but it is not picking up any of the CSS or image files. So each page displays unstyled text and all the images are broken.

I think that I may have to put the images and CSS on S3 storage, but I've not really been able to find anything that explains this.

Any pointers?

I don't commute, I probably travel to MK to London on average once a year or so for leisure activities.

Worst luck I got tickets for a gig in London (booked months ago) that is on one of the strike days. The tickets weren't cheap, and it is a band I have followed for a very long time that don't tour the UK very often.

Any ideas on the best way to get to London for the evening if the trains are on strike? Is it feasible to drive to the outskirts and get a tube in (it starts at 7pm so after the rush hour)?

Sorry not strictly DIY, we had a sink replaced and the plumber fitted flexible tap connectors to replace the existing copper pipe. I'd actually never seen them before.

Since then I've read various horror stories that they burst after a few years. I even read somewhere that a major Australian home insurer says they account for 20% of all house floods.

I can see why the plumber fitted them, quicker and easier, but he isn't going to have to deal with problems if it floods in a few years.

I get the impression that they have become the norm now, so I guess they can't be that bad or they would have stopped using them.

How much of a problem are they?

According to Matthew 27:51–53, many dead saints came back to life after the ressurection and went to Jerusalem, where they were seen by many people.

And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

I've seen Christians trying to use the very few known historical fragments of information we have about the existence of Jesus to somehow "prove" that he must have been resurrected.

Yet this momentous event - lots of dead people ris

I'm looking for a tool to keep track of several ongoing projects, just to give me an overview of what I need to do for a few weeks ahead. Trello looks pretty good, but the horizontal card layout is a bit of a deal breaker for me. Either narrower columns or some kind of grid layout would let me see everything on one screen.

It is a bit frustrating, there are a couple of Chrome extensions that appear to do what I want but they don't seem to work. None of them seem to have been updated for a couple of years, so I wonder if Trello has moved on and they no longer work.

Does anyone know of anything that works?

I've been painting on and off for a few years, but still very much an amateur.

I tend to use Cotman paints, and I am quite happy with them, I get the impression most people think they are good quality for the money.

I am just curious as to how much difference artist quality paints would make? Obviously they aren't going to make me a better painter, but if I produce a painting that I am reasonably pleased with are the paints going to make a difference?

They cost about 3 times more, but in the scheme of things paint costs pennies per painting anyway. Is it worth a try or just a waste of money?

Wondering about the best way to handle this.

I have a custom static site generator that spits out about a directory tree with about 1000 html files in total. It always deletes the top level output directory when it starts.

I am moving to digitalocean app platform which needs the directory tree to be in a github repo.

What is the easiest way to merge a new directory tree into the github repo?

I am not really interested in version control for the html files, because all the markdown files are already under change control in a separate github project.

I would like to share zip file content, depending on tier:

  • Some tiers get no content
  • Some tiers get content from the previous month or two
  • Some tiers can access everything

I am not sure, if I make posts with the zip files attached, does that mean people in the mid tier will be able to access things that were posted before they joined? I don't want that of course.

One possibility is a shared drive with private links that would be deleted each month and replaced with new ones. Has anyone used a system like that?

What is a good service? Could use dropbox or google drive, but I am not sure they are intended for this purpose (ie sharing with anyone who knows the link). Is there a better

I find mind maps very useful for breaking down and planning complex tasks (I run a tech website and a couple of open source projects as a hobby). But I always seem to end up using a spreadsheet or Onenote for keeping track of progress. I even tried using Jira once, I use it at work, but it was a bit much for hobby projects.

Problem is that I have to keep the mindmap and spreadsheet manually synced, which is quite frustrating.

It seemed like Ayoa offered both - mindmaps and task sheets that are linked automatically.

So I paid for a month subscription to try it out, and I am not too impressed. The tasks and mindmaps seem to be linked in quite a half-arsed way, and every way I've tried to ma

I have a fairly modest amount invested a couple of tracker funds at the moment. They took a tumble earlier in the year, but are back in the black now.

I am quite concerned that a) the markets might still crash again in the next few months and b) sterling might lose value due to Brexit.

Any suggestions for a safe haven where my money will keep its value even if the markets fall, but isn't pegged to sterling? Not expecting stellar returns, obviously.
