I recently migrated my ISC configuration to DNSMasq for DHCP and all went well. I'm getting IPs, both v4 and v6, names are being registered in DNS, my registered configurations were easy to import, etc. This has all been set up for about a week.

However, in the last day or so, I've noticed that DNS resolution for my local domain has started failing. Reverse works fine, but when I query by name I get NXDOMAIN response. If I restart Unbound, it will happily return NOERROR for the domain forwarded to DNSMasq for 45-60 minutes, and then it will start returning NXDOMAIN again. I've tried various things like turning off DNSSEC, using TCP for the forwarded queries, etc, but nothing makes a di

I just completed a kitchen remodel where among many other things I had undercabinet lighting installed. The contractors used an all in one driver + switch unit (takes 120V input, outputs 24V), which complicates my plans to be able to automate that lighting. My original plan was a separate switch + driver, such that I could replace the switch with a standard smart switch to be able to turn the driver on/off, but I can't do that with this combo unit.

I bought a Shelly 1 thinking I could use that on the 24V side of things, but a) there's not a heck of a lot of space in the box with this combo unit and its split design that tries to s

Back story: On Monday, I called up to cancel my X1 Preferred Pro triple play service and move to only Gigabit Internet + XFi Complete. I wanted to do this because I haven't used voice in at least 5 years (not since my insurance company started accepting email and stopped requiring fax) and I haven't watched TV in 6 months since my in-laws left, so there's no reason to pay for either of those.

On Monday, the support rep told me everything was good and I should see gigabit speeds shortly. I rebooted my modem. Nothing happened. This agent was nice, but I don't know what she did or didn't do that got things messed up. The agent was from retention.

On Tuesday, I called back in to figure out wha

I just got the text that we (me and my kids) aren't invited to the in-laws Thanksgiving this year. I suppose I expected it was going to happen, but I guess I was being naive that maybe things wouldn't change.

Backstory: My wife passed away 5.5 years ago. After that, her parents moved in with me to help out with our young kids (2 years old and 2 months old at the time). The in-laws quickly overstayed their welcome, but out of some sense of obligation I let them stay until both kids were in school. Which means they finally left this past summer. We're in the Pacific Northwest, and they moved back to FL despite their only remaining child and all their grandkids living here. IMHO, good ri

This is my 2016 M60-d3. It's not quite two years old, purchased from Costco and thus is still under Costco's extended 2 year manufacturer warranty. It looks like there are two distinct areas where the backlight is failing.

Who should I talk to about this? Vizio? I'm assuming Costco's extension of the manufacturer warranty doesn't apply to Vizio's support. Should I go back to Costco? Should I live with it for another month or so to see what's coming for the 2018 models? If I go back to Costco, I'm pretty sure they'll just give me a new set, but I'm not a huge fan of the 2017 M-series with its lower refresh rate. I'd trade up to a P75, but I'm not su

I have the burgundy i5/8GB/256GB Surface Laptop. Last night, I put it to sleep as I normally do. Tonight, it won't turn on. When I press the power button, it'll flash the Surface logo once or twice, light up the keyboard, and then turn back off. It's plugged in, and was plugged in all day so it shouldn't be a battery drain problem.

Before I take it in to be repaired/replaced (the earliest I can do that would be Saturday), does anybody know of special power-on key sequences that work on the Laptop? All I can find on the web and Microoft's support is the vol_up+power for Surface tablets, but that doesn't seem to work for the Laptop. I also tried holding the power button for up to 30s, w

I finally upgraded to 2.3. I'd been looking forward to the upgrade because it finally enabled DHCPv6 server configuration on tracked interfaces. That was my holy grail, because with DHCPv6 I could finally have reverse DNS for IPv6, which can't be done at all with SLAAC. Unfortunately that functionality is still not in place. There's the option to provide dynamic DNS updates against a separate DNS server, but ideally I want this to happen through Unbound rather than running a DNS server off the router (the BIND package is no longer available on 2.3, so setting up BIND on the pfsense box is a non-starter).

Is this work being tracked for a future release? A simple oversight? Functionally

Due to some necessary house rearranging, I'm thinking of shrinking my current NAS build into something smaller and quieter. This is what I've put together so far (not reusing anything from the current build; will transfer data over and then decommission the current hardware):

I have a Lumia 830 and I flashed the new Denim update to it yesterday. Ever since that flash, my account on the phone says "Not up to date" and reports error 80070490. I've tried all of the various solutions I can find from bingling that error, yet nothing fixes the problem. And just to add a wrench into things, I'm getting the same error from the Mail app on a Windows 10 laptop, and I even booted up my old Lumia 920 that hasn't been used in almost a year, updated my password on it, and it too has the same "Not up to date, 80070490" error.

Since the problem exists on at least three devices, I don't think it's related to updating my AT&T 830 to Denim.

Sometime in the past couple of days I've lost the ability to get prefix delegation from Comcast. I've tried calling support, but they're obviously useless.

I've got $140k I want to stuff into my kids' 529 accounts. However 529 accounts count against gifting limits, and purely for laziness I don't want to dip into the lifetime exemption (because I don't feel like filling out the forms come tax time). That means I can't drop $70k each into the accounts right now. So instead I'm putting in $10k/year, to allow for leeway on the $14k limit (for birthday money and such). But that means I need to have at least the full $20k available to each year over the next 6 years (already taken care of the $10k for this year).

I know not to put this in the market, since I need the principal to be available and don't want to pull money from elsewhere to make
