For everyone who can't create platoons with their friends right now, it seems you can do a work around using the Team Training games mode.

For those unfamiliar:

1: change your gamemode with the drop down menu next to the battle button.

2: click create room

3: have your platoonmate(s) join the training room

4: right click their name when they appear and choose create platoon.

Note when you click create platoon you'll be kicked from the team training gamemode and your friend will have an invite. I haven't been able to test "chaining" the invites to get three people in a platoon, but with this method you can get 2 person platoons.
