So I am trying to identify a half-membered short story. it's probably from the 1970s, probably new wave, but could be 60s or 80s.

The plot involves a woman in a post-apocalyptic setting, I think, who joins a commune of deaf people living in the desert? if she's going to stay with them long-term she has to make a choice about whether or not to deliberately lose her hearing.

Does that ring a bell for anyone? Suggestions much appreciated.

About a month back I started a no-rivers-mod playthrough (couldn't get it working reliably with Terra Prety).

Things were going ok but I really missed the look and the transport options of having rivers carve through the landscape. Somehow I had put my main base in a boring semi-forested gravel region too, but that's on me.

So I thought I'd restart and get my mod list perfect this time. I'm sure you know the feeling.

I generated a bunch of creative worlds just to test out the differences between vanilla worldgen and the Plains and Valleys mod, Terra Prety, and the Conquest Landform Overhaul mod. Some interesting differences but I was sad to find I couldn't get the rivers mod to work with

Hi, all.

Relatively new player here (bought VS last July) and very much addicted to the game.

One of the things I really enjoy about the game is the time commitment needed for some kinds of crafting. Such as stone knapping, clay forming, pit kilns, cooking, metal smelting, leather work, etc. It forces you to think about whether you really want that extra spear or one more large clay storage vessel.

Of course it's a fine line. Sometimes this kind of crafting can get tedious: I've increased tool durability to 200% for example, just to make sure I am not always knapping new flint axes and shovels. But I think VS mostly gets it right. (Maybe I will change my tune when I reach 1000 hours of

Hey, there. I've been away from the game for a few years, waiting mostly for the terrain and biome generation to get upgraded. It seems like that's happened now, so it feels like time to get back into NMS.

Do I need to do anything special to see the best of the new planets and biomes? From browsing the forums, I'm hearing about purple stars and so on. Will I only see new stuff after completing the game's main storyline? Has the new terrain generation been applied across the board, or only on specific planets? What would you recommend for someone who's played the game before (70 hours maybe?) and wants to see the new sights as quickly as possible?

(I figured these must be common questions,

Hey all.

So I love the game but I'm also really bad at it.

I've been using the Primitive Survival mod this time around and I think it's great but I am struggling to figure out what foods make sense as bait in deadfall traps, fish baskets, etc. My problem is that if I put, say, some cooked meat into a fish basket, it's not clear to me whether that's profitable. I may be giving away more calories in bait than I am getting in caught fish.

Same for deadfall traps, etc.

You people who are old hands at Primitive Survival: what do you do? Are worms the only sensible bait? Thanks.

I've had my current PC, more or less, since 2012, so it's overdue for an upgrade. (Still running an old i7-2600K CPU, paired with an RX-590 GPU. It's good enough for 1080p gaming if you turn down some settings.)

The big priority: I would like to move to a widescreen monitor at 3440x1440 resolution. I know I should save up for something at 144 Hz but it's probably going to be an LG model with only a 100 Hz refresh rate for now.

I want a mid-range CPU and GPU combo that will allow me to make the most of that monitor without breaking the bank, basically. Not too loud, not too power-hungry, but able to get somewhere between 60 to 100 FPS at 3440x1440 in most current-gen games on high or ultra

Wondering whether I am missing something here. Trying to use smart splitters and a sushi belt to manage the handling of my return-to-base loot-processing box. For example, to automatically select out the different kinds of enemy remains and turn them into alien protein then alien DNA samples.

I've gotten to the point where I'd like to take paleberries off the sushi belt and put them into their own storage box, but I'm seeing a strange result where the splitter will allow me to select most biological stuff, such as wood, leaves, biomass, beryl nuts, etc. But paleberries don't appear on the list. Same for bacon agaric.

Is this a known bug? I assume someone must have solved this problem befo

For those knowledgeable about the update process and switching between builds: thanks in advance.

I've been on the experimental build for a while now and am enjoying everything about Update 8. Now that U8 has gone over to the EA build, is there a strong reason to switch from experimental to EA? Or am I OK just sticking with the experimental build for now?

(Presumably at some point in the near-to-mid future they'll start deploying ideas for U9 into the experimental build and then I will have a decision to make.)

Hi. I'm not a regular here but I wasn't sure where else to ask the question.

Have any of you tried Train World, released this July? It looks similar to Transport Tycoon, I suppose, but focuses entirely on trains and seems to have absolutely huge maps.

The Steam page doesn't offer a lot of details about the game though and the reviews are a little mixed. I thought I'd check to see whether the game has any fans here.

Thanks for any opinions.

Hi.

Just a quick question for anyone out there who's knowledgeable about the Kerbalism mod.

In my current career run I've turned on lifetime radiation, but I was wondering what happens if a Kerbal hits their 100% lifetime dosage while on a mission. Do they drop dead immediately, or are they just forcibly retired from spaceflight once they return to Kerbin?

Of course I could just find out the hard way, but it's going to be really tragic if Jeb dies on his way back from Duna and I need to be prepared! ;)

So, I'm on the experimental build and yesterday there was a medium-sized update (a few hundred MB, I think?) I got my hopes up and thought that maybe the new cosmonaut-mode build had been released, but it doesn't look like it.

Does anyone know what the update changed? Thanks for any advice.

I'm starting with just a small town and trying to get some of its water and sewage needs sorted out via trucks. (Feel free to tell me that this is folly and I should just accept that I will need pipes everywhere.)

So far I'm OK with buying water and sewage trucks in a depot and setting up individual lines for them to take water or sewage from one place to another. For example, the sewage truck picks up from a sewage loading/unloading station, then drops off at another sewage loading/unloading station that connects directly with a sewage outflow in a distant river. No big problems there so far.

What I can't figure out is: what are the water and sewage trucks at the technical services office

So with the new water system, we have three possible sources, I think. The small well, the big well, and the surface intake pump for use on lakes or rivers. Is it just me, or is the third option currently mislabelled as outflow?

Hi, all.

The game has been on my wishlist for a long time, and I bought it just recently. I've put a lot of hours into Kerbal Space Program and I thought this might scratch a similar itch. In KSP I enjoy very much the challenge of designing the right ship for a particular mission, but also the actual execution of the mission.

Here in Stormworks there's obviously a steep learning curve, and I'm OK with that. But I'm curious: as I get deeper into the game, what's the expected balance between time spent designing and constructing vehicles, and time spent actually carrying out missions with said vehicles?

From the game's trailer I had the impression that it would be a 50/50 thing: half your
