Seven of our nine draft picks were team captains

Stroud, Anderson, Scruggs, Dell, Horton, Patterson, and Hutchinson were all team captains last year. Only To'oTo'o and Hill were not.

So in case anyone has lingering questions of why we picked the guy we did instead of someone else on the board, there's the answer. We drafted for talent, but also to set a tone. Built a culture. We are a team of leaders.

And it's worth noting that Anderson was To'oTo'o's captain

Yo how do you pronounce Henrys last name?

RunawayXcon:watt1_2:•

"toe-oh toe-oh" is the correct way to pronounce it

Ok 👍🏽

Someone desperately needs to give him a cool nickname ASAP so I can stop butchering it.

toe-ohta-oh

Can we all agree to call him "2-2"?

3
Jokerang:Whatabag:•

I noticed that too. Seems like a great way to help build the right culture.

Y’all should hire Jason Garrett, too!

There are at least 3 Texans fans on this sub who specifically find a reason this is bad.

Doesn’t matter Brian

Belikedis:Slime_in_the_ice_machine:•

Notice none of them were captains of a national champion team, so they couldn’t have been that great of leaders.

Totally a /s

This is something I’m excited about. Change the culture and atmosphere in Houston.

Gotta change the ownership to really change the culture.

I thought this way too, but I'm reassessing Cal's ability to let people who know what they are doing do their jobs. In a way, Cal might only be guilty of one long mistake---a bad start/transition from his dad---rather than continuing, decades-long series of them (see Lions, Dolphins, Browns for examples).

3
Montallas:merciless1:•

I understand he’s trying to improve and recover from an entire existence of poor ownership (add raiders and cowboys to your list). I’m not even remotely close to considering him to be a step up from his father. It started (for me) with the inmates comment, and I was well on my way out when BoB was brought in as the guy. Hopkins trade was cherry on top and I was long gone and laughing during the entire Watson/booty hole scandal. They are dead to me

0
Code_Cric•

They’re dead to you… but you’re posting in r/Texans? Not trying to be snarky but this is a confusing statement to me. If the owners dead to you wouldn’t you want to avoid interacting with the team?

5
obsidian_green:rick2:•

I won't blame Cal for his daddy.

Probably won't be popular, but I liked O'Brien as just a coach---I still think he knows his football, but needs to give up on power games and concentrate on just being a HC. I think he could be a solid coach for a solid organization like the Ravens or Steelers, where they would make it clear he's the coach, not the boss. As a combo GM, BoB was roasted garbage, so I'm glad he's gone, but he brilliantly managed the QB carousel days before Rick Smith ruined the roster trying to save money for Tony Romo (that summer is what tanked the o-line) and choosing draft dud Kevin Johnson over AJ Bouye (which ruined the secondary). BoB was trying to fix problems he didn't cause, but his "solutions" only made things worse.

I no longer watch the NBA (ref scandal and what it revealed about how the NBA put its thumb on the scales is when I started losing interest), so I understand reaching points of no return.

Team Captain Seven

Fluid_Researcher_301:houR:•

Even last year, we drafted Thomas Booker who was a captain for Stanford. We definitely target guys who understand what it takes mentally, not just physically.

Free agency too.

That's less than than half of our picks this year. Let him sip

13
randomscribbles2OP:doodle2:•

Much fewer fourth, fifth and sixth rounders are. And that’s where we passed on some real value to get who we got. This explains it.

SelectCattle•

Who is this asshole bringing facts to a Kool-aid party?!?! Boo! Boooooo!

6
BisonST:baby-yoda:•

Yeah I'd expect most NFL level talent to be a team captain if they aren't behind another NFL level talent.

1
Brilliant_Fly_9687•

That’s what I’m saying

1
M7BSVNER7s•

But the big swing there is the Texans identifying and drafting NFL level talent.

1
Laszhal•

Seven of Nine is a crossover reference I never expected to hear.

harplawJaguars•

I don't mean to be negative as the Texans had a good draft, but as a Jaguars fan the captain thing made me laugh hysterically when I remembered "Clean" Gene Smith insisting on nearly every pick being team captains. And then he traded up to get Justin Blackmon! 😂

New general manager Gene Smith put a big emphasis on character and leadership in his first draft. Four of his first five selections were captains of their college teams.

6
unknown_ian25•

Obviously this is a cool thing to learn but wouldn’t a relatively large amount of top talent draft prospects be captains for their respective college anyways?

Just curious on how many captains there were in the nfl draft this year.

4
Even-Chemistry8569•

There is something to be said about drafting guys that are captains, although I hope they aren’t putting too much emphasis on it. Like Bob with his emphasis on versatility, sure it’s a good thing but not more important than being talented

3
RocketsGuy•

Pitre was also captain

3
ziggy029•

It's the kind of player Ryans was, too, so it's not surprising that he would want to put his stamp on a team built around leaders on the field.

2
tran_man23:PAPER-BAG:•

This is the way.

1
tsx_1430•

I was going tom post this.

1
Kame_Ussop•

I wonder what percentage of players drafted, in general, are captains. There's over 100 D1 teams and a few captains per team. Im sure at 7 out of 9 we were over the average but it wouldnt suprise me if most 1st and 2nd rounders are usually captains.

1
sstewart1617•

Texans doom version: we are gonna have a locker room with too many chefs and too few cooks. Locker room strife will tear us apart from all the leaders with different plans.

1
content_enjoy3r:Whatabag:•

If everyone is a leader then no one is as there is no one following.

-27
BillyAstro•

It’s not like these guys were Captains as soon as they walked into the door in college. They had to earn it.

25
RainbowBullsOnParade:ka:•

You’re right, drafting men who earned the respect of others is stupid

17
The_New_New•
