Love Beyond the Grave | Recap Ep. 7 - 8 : Neck Grabs, Skull Jokes & A Pact
Episode 7 Highlights:
The Soverign of the Dead (He Simu) corners the General with a neck grab and demands the truth. He offers his skull at fifty. She accepts. Meanwhile, a family pays for loyalty with blood.

Spy suspicions: Duan Xu’s camp is leaking intelligence. He Simu appears in his room, invisible, watching him bandage his own wounds. Meng Wan offers help but he declines politely. (They are close but not very close, isn't it?)
She neckgrabs and pins him to the wall telepathically. She wants to know his identity. He deflects with smiles. He Simu takes physical form, pins him to the bed, hand on his throat. Wants to know who he really is. He deflects with charm: “Does Your Highness want to collect my skull? It’ll look better at fifty.”
The terms are revealed: One wish = one sense for ten days. She can save his life, but not win the war. Mortal bodies can’t handle more. Xia Qingsheng walks in just in time to prevent Commandar Meng Wan from bleaching her eyes and a heartbreak.
Duan Xu asks if the Po Wang Sword led her to him. He teases her about her fashion sense. She retorts: "dig up a grave if you’re curious" carelessly revealing she is 400 years old.
Sleeping Arrangements: totally normally to watch 'your dinner' sleep
She climbs into his bed that night. He falls asleep fast, surprising her. She tells him she eats people; he raves about killing people in the name of war. Same line of work!
Lin family tragedy
Chen Ying tells He Simu he likes Duan Xu. Then word comes: Lin Jun’s uncle, Lin Huaide, is captured and brought to the city wall. The uncle gives a stirring speech about his father (Lin Jun's) grandfather who died fighting for Great Liang, and how his family bowed to survive but never forgot their roots. The Chong soldiers execute the entire family held captive.

Duan Xu’s plan: He meets grieving Lin Jun, reveals he suspects Han Lingqiu is the spy, and asks Lin to help test him. Trial by blindfold (kinky!)
Commander Wu tells Han Lingqiu about the upcoming “trial.” Han Lingqiu wins easily. Then blindfolded, he fights with terrifying precision (flashbacks of his past). Duan Xu points at Lin Jun: “Master Fifteen, where have you hidden the real Lin Jun?”. The general gets kidnapped after a little detective skill level reveal, but before kidnapping he had told He Simu that he’s been playing a much longer game than anyone suspected.

Novel Context: >!The blindfolded duel is a Tian Zhixiao ritual (the death soldier training Duan Xu survived). Fifteen was part of that world. The drama hints at Han Lingqiu’s past without explaining it yet.!<
Character Notes
- He Simu is both threatening and tender (she pins him down, then shares his bed). She’s learning what it means to want someone.
- Duan Xu is a gambler; he’d rather bet on his charm than spill secrets. His ease with death is unsettling (and very attractive).

Episode 8 Highlights:
Duan Xu lets himself be taken hostage. Because why wouldn’t the master of chaos use a kidnapping to assassinate the enemy commander?
perfect ambiance for date night
In the enemy camp: Duan Xu, chained to a cross, whispers to He Simu (invisible) about Tian Zhixiao: an organization that raised death soldiers, numbered them, and made them fight to the death until one remained. He’s number Seventeen.
Fifteen (formerly disguised as Lin Jun) can’t get Duan Xu to talk. Duan Xu asks: “How did it feel to live as an honest man?” It unsettles Fifteen. (Why? These numbered warriors killed to survive without having any ties to anyone except total loyalty to their Master).
Duan Xu breaks his shackles (bone‑shrinking skill), changes into a Chong uniform, and wreaks havoc.
He sets horses loose with flaming carts, the east wind spreads the fire. Flashback (Duan Xu had asked He Simu about wind direction and now she can piece together why). He finds Awo’erqi’s tent and kills the man.
one man can fight a hundred men (tian zhixiao training)
He Simu remembers she saw red‑tailed fish there. Only Awo’erqi could afford a Western‑region cat that ate those fish. Duan Xu leaves after beheading the general (takes his head as a souvenier because why not?).
blood, fire and death everywhere along with some fishes
Fifteen pursues him. Duan Xu reveals he is Seventeen. They fight; Duan Xu is badly wounded but kills Fifteen.
Afterward, he tells He Simu his last Tian Zhixiao mission was to kill a family 9including a newborn). He spared the child blinded his master instead, gave the baby away, and wandered. He does not say it ourtight but implies that killing excites him.
He tells her his true identity. He is the real Duan Xu. He was kidnapped as a kid, his father disowned him (lied about him being Duan Xu) to protect state secrets, a fake was sent to Daizhou. He survived Tian Zhixiao, >!returned, and reclaimed his name.!<
The deal made: He agrees to the senses pact. He also bets she won’t let him die. She smiles.

On a broom‑stick ride (he jokes it’s his “steed”), thhey both tell each other their names. his name means military honor. She tells him her name is He Simu (yearning). He wishes her peace and new year then passes out. She wishes him a long life.

Novel Context (spoiler‑light):
!The bone‑shrinking skill is something both Duan Xu and Fifteen learned as children. It’s how they can disguise height and escape bonds.!<
!The cat clue is exactly how Duan Xu identified Awo’erqi’s tent in the novel. The drama kept this clever detail. The confession about the baby is unique to the drama; it adds depth to his guilt and his mercy. In the novel, he admits to having killed people to live another day including innocent children.!<
Character Notes
Duan Xu is a weapon who was forged into one due to circumstances. His smile is both mask and real. When he finally tells He Simu his past, it’s his first unguarded moment. He tells her about his father abandoning him when he slipped into a well. His father did not give him his hand to climb out. This is why him extending his hand to He Simu is significant. The independent assassin has leaned on someone after years of solitude.
the fox turned into a rabbit when he asked her to take his hand
He Simu is no longer observing or testing him. She is moved by his torment. When she calls him “little fox,” and "rabbit", this time it’s with affection. When she relates with hum by saying that she is abnormal, that's her ice melting.
