Without further ado, here's Part 1 of Chapter 5

Terror on Moonbase Alpha - Chapter 5, Part 1

The room was small and hot, almost unbearably so. Jacob felt a trickle of sweat run down to the small of his back and collect there with the others. They didn't believe him, of course, but they were being extra hard on him, mostly because he had embarrassed them so.

This moonbase was the DDF's crown jewel, the culmination and realization of a dream as old as the coin itself.

Dogecoin was, quite literally, on the moon.

The Dogecoin Defense Force was an elite team charged solely with the protection of Dogecoin and the various mining facilities that had popped up in the last century.

Over the decades they had only gotten better at what they did -- so much so that they had expanded their mandate and spent the last dozen years or so winning world-wide acclaim for their outreach and humanitarian work.

They were not used to being caught with their pants down.

"Go over it again," the voice over the loudspeaker was gruff and unwavering. It'd been a good four hours of this now, that same voice trying to find some flaw, some crack in his story.

"People don't just appear out of thin air," the voice seemed to be talking to the room now, to themselves.

"Like I said, I didn't 'just appear'. We walked right past you. All of you." Jacob was trying hard to hide the smirk that was forming. It was something special to see them so flustered, moreso in that if he hadn't lived it himself, there was no way in hell that he'd have believed him either.

"This girl, Kara, that you said you walked with - we have video confirmation that she never left her bed."

"We've been over this a dozen times. Whatever this thing is, it was using Kara - some kind of image of her. It... gets inside your head. Makes you see things -- or, in your case, not see things."

Jacob rippled his fingers across the surface of the table.

Ra-pa-ta-tat.

Ra-pa-ta-tat.

Ra-pa-ta-tat!

It was a nervous twitch that he'd picked up back in grade school, one of the closest things to a 'tell' that he had when something was getting on his nerves. Getting under his skin.

He felt the room get warmer by another full degree and thought of an old story his grandpa had told him about how you boil a frog.

You never just drop a frog into boiling water 'cause they'll hop right out on you. The trick was to put them in a nice warm pot and slowly turn up the heat. By the time it realized it was in trouble, it was already too late.

The irony, of course, was that neither of them had ever actually seen a live frog - the vast majority of them had gone extinct long before his gramps was born - but the story, unlike their namesake, lived on in their stead, reminding people to be mindful of their surroundings.

"Look, you can slow roast me all you want but my story's not going to change," Jacob called out, shaking his head. "At some point you're going to have to accept that I'm telling the truth and then, if you aren't already, you're going to start crapping your pants."

He paused, looking right up at the camera.

"'Cause if this thing could let me walk right past you, unaware, who knows what else it's hiding from us?"
