Terror on Moonbase Alpha - Chapter 7, Part 1

"Ugh, what the hell?" Kara thought, trying to shake off the cobwebs, she was lying on the ground, her head -- no, her jaw -- was screeching in pain.

Why was she in a hospital gown? What the hell was going on?

She heard a soft 'ding-ding-ding' ring out over the intercom above her and the sound of someone breathing in ragged bursts off to her right. Kara rolled slightly, her body didn't seem to want to listen to her, as if it was fighting her. On the floor was Jacob, covered in sweat, performing CPR on some downed woman.

"Jacob!" She tried to call out to him but something was wrong, her voice wasn't working.

"Jacob!" she tried again, to no avail.

The doors hissed open and within seconds the nurses were all over her, helping her up back onto the bed - the room around them in utter shambles.

"Help!" Jacob called, "Help, I need help!"

"What are you doing?!" she thought-yelled at the nurses, "help him!". A nurse spoke to him, something about him 'not getting to win' -- and then she heard it. Heard herself speak. It was one word, in her voice, some horrible, sick copy of her voice.

"Run."

The nurses advanced upon him, one with a massive needle and Jacob ran, leaving the woman behind. She had seen Jacob be boorish, she had even seen him be kind of creepy (seriously, dude, you are not subtle when you try to check out a girl's ass)... but she had never, ever seen him scared.

No, this went well beyond scared. He had run like his life had depended on it. Like a fox from a pack of wolves.

Kara felt her body move, her arms steady themselves. It was a surreal sensation, her arms, her chest, her head, it was all moving and she could feel it... but it wasn't her. Like being in the backseat of her own body.

The nurses stared at her blankly before seeming to shake it off or wake up or something. They all looked at one another, unsure, as if they had no idea how they had gotten there.

"Thank you," Kara's voice said "I'm feeling much better now."

Together, as one, the nurses nodded then excused themselves from the room.

And then, after a moment, she felt her body collapse to the ground as well. Discarded, like a candy-bar wrapper.

Her mind felt a pull, not unlike a suction before she found herself floating free, a sensation like flying but without the air drag overwhelmed her.

Her body was there, below, on the ground -- was it breathing? Was she still breathing?? -- and then she was somewhere else.

Hands. Not her hands. Masculine hands. Thick, heavy, hands that had grooves in the skin from years of hard labor. They were in a sink, washing, hand over hand.

She felt the body stiffen for a moment then sort of settle into it, her consciousness poured into a fresh bottle. Kara was still in the back seat but she could feel a heaviness about her, a new width to her.

The hands came up and washed a face, a tired, weather-worn face. A man's face. It looked into the mirror and the pupils dilated wide. The body turned from what it was doing and walked out of the washroom. It got dressed, slowly, mechanically, into a military issue uniform.

The insignia on his chest read T. Parker and revealed him to be a Commander in the DDF. He straightened the insignia with a crooked grin that didn't fit his face.

He seemed to notice that and it gave him pause. The Commander opened and closed his eyes, hard. Made faces in the mirror, stretching out his jaw and mouth. Open and shut, open and shut. She felt bits more of 'him' become... aware... to her? She could feel his jaw clicking on the left side, an old boxing injury that had never quite healed right.

Wait... how did she know that?

She felt herself searching around, reaching. He'd been married. Twice. Maureen was the first... she had died. Breast Cancer. Sarah was his current wife. She was back on Earth with his two sons. Scott and Mike.

Kara stopped herself, realizing what she was doing - an awkward sense of shame swept over her then. She was rifling through his mind. Everything she'd ever wanted to know about Commander Trent Parker was laid out before her. She didn't even have to look, just... show interest and it was there to be studied.

Some memory bloomed in his mind then -- a firefight gone bad, some guy... no, his name was Brock. They were best friends. Brock was dying. It was a gutshot. It was bad and they both knew it.

Trent had been helping Brock hold his guts in. Thick, bluish purple ropes snaked and slipped in his -- in her -- hands. She could smell the stench of Brock's open bowels and she retched inside his mind.

And then, for just a moment, she saw it happen. The Commander staggered, shaking his head - she felt her 'connection' to him weaken.

For one single flash of a moment she saw herself outside of him.

But it was just for a moment and before she knew it, she felt herself being poured back inside.

And, after a quick stretch of his jaw, The Commander was on the move.
