Foldable Humans
#Foldable Humans
It were a chore what needed
doin’, so she gone an’ done it.
Simple as Sunday. No use
quailin’ an sheddin’ no alligator
tears now. What's did is did
an’ cain't be undid.
I've gone through this
strange inversion regarding Halloween.
It used to be a day of release,
a day of hope.
The one day out of the whole year
I might have been anything. Anyone.
A ballerina, a nurse.
A great orator, a warrior princess.
It was a day of reckoning, of
reasoning with inner selves.
Of imagining a better me.
A more me me, then seeing
that self reflected in the shiny
surfaces of R2D2 costumes and
flat, featureless Michael Meyer masks—
somehow made far less
threatening at 6:30 on a Thursday
than at midnight on Saturday,
huddled under blankets and stuffing
oversalted popcorn mindlessly in our mouths,
slackjawed at the endless
mutability of foldable humans.
Cowardice comes easily in the dark.
I'm lyin'; I’m a lioness.
