Worst Seasons in the Past 25 Years Part 17: Colorado College

Welcome to the Worst Season in the Past 25 Years, a series in which r/CollegeHockey reviews the worst season for all 60 Division I teams over the summer to alleviate the crushing boredom known as the off-season and take a horrific tour down memory lane.

If you are interested in writing an entry for your team, please let me know via PM. I’ll be posting entries on weekdays at approximately at 6 pm Eastern time and will be going in alphabetical order. If an entry is not posted at that time, assume that “real life” has gotten in the way and that I am not able to post. If I am aware in advance that I will not post at 6 pm on a particular day, I will announce it in prior posts as a heads up.

And now.../r/CollegeHockey presents the Colorado College Tigers! These Tigers were one of the most successful teams early on in the NCAA era, making several Ice Dance appearances and winning it 2 times. Once moving into the old WCHA, tourney appearances would be rare until the 1990s, where streaks of appearances and a handful of Frozen Fours would materialize. Since moving to the NCHC in 2013, Colorado College have not won ten games in a single season, making them perennial wooden spooners.

Thus far, the worst season for the Tigers is…

2015-2016 Record: 6-1-29 (W-D-L); NCHC: 4-1-19 (W-D-L; 8th/8th)

Wins: Air Force. Miami (x2), @Alabama Huntsville, @St. Cloud, Nebraska Omaha

Tie: @North Dakota

Losses: Amworst (x2), @Lowell (x2), Boston College (x2), North Dakota (x2), @Denver, Denver, Minnesota Duluth (x2), @Air Force, @Western Michigan (x2), @Alabama Huntsville, @St. Cloud St., @North Dakota, Nebraska Omaha, @Minnesota Duluth (x2), Denver, @Denver*, @Miami (x2), St. Cloud (x2), @North Dakota (x2)^

*Game played at Coors Field, Denver

^ NCHC first round

Biggest Beatdown: CC 0 - Minnesota Duluth 6, CC 3 - St. Cloud 9, North Dakota 7 - CC 1

Head Coach: Mike Haviland

This was coach Haviland’s second year at CC, hired in 2014 after previous coach Scott Owens resigned. Hunter Fejes led the team in scoring with 13 goals. Teemu Kivihalme had the most assists, with 12. Jacob Nehama had a save percentage of .894 and a GAA of 3.89.

The Colorado College Tigers started their season with a home series with Amworst, dropping both games. A trip to Lowell would end in two losses as well, which was followed by two losses to Boston College at home. The NCHC slate began with a home series to eventual national champions North Dakota, getting swept by the Sioux Fighting Hawks.

November began with a quick home-and-home series with Denver. A home series with Minnesota Duluth occurred the following weekend. A split series with non-con Air Force would be the first win for CC in this season.

December continued on with Miami, a series in which the Tigers swept the Redhawks. A trip to Western Michigan was fruitless while a trip to Alabama Huntsville the following week ended in a split series.

The new year started with split series away to Saint Cloud. A trip to North Dakota did garner one tie. The home series with Nebraska Omaha was split. The rest of the season was winless, with the Tigers being swept by: Minnesota Duluth away, Denver home-and-away, Miami away, and Saint Cloud at home. In the NCHC first round, CC was dispatched by North Dakota in two games by a combined score of 12-2.

The next season (2016-17), CC would improve to eight wins and four ties. It remains unknown if the Tigers can improve or maintain their position in the NCHC as wooden spooners.

For Week 4 of this series, we will look at the worst seasons in recent memory for the following schools: UConn, Cornell and Dartmouth. Once again, if you are interested in doing the entry for your favorite school, shoot me a PM. Your school, name, and date will be added at the end of each post to serve as a reminder. So far, the following people have inquired about a spot:
