They've tagged it for speedy deletion due to being "unsalvageably incoherent". I'd say that needs to be changed. I stubbified it, took away the speedy delete, and gave reason to keep it around, at least for a little bit. It still definitely needs some more content for that to hold.

11

Those bastards, I put in a hangon tag, and was in the middle of writing a justification and someone just comes along and deletes the entire article for vandalism. Meh, now I remember why I gave up on ever trying to add anything to wikipedia meaningful to wiki, cause you can't even add something with little meaning without being viciously censored.

According to Stigler's Law of Eponymy, which states that scientific discoveries are never named after their original discoverer, this should be called Badalchemist's Theory. Or Tardmrr's Discovery, because he made the bestof post.

You sure that's actually Stigler's Law?

Well, our WP page is finally down. Plainly knowing that the article would go against several policies, I still learned more than I thought about the experience:

  1. I did not formerly recognize the extent to which an official policy prevents people from thinking by themselves and discussing controversial topics,
  2. WP is as arbitrary and biased as any other source, and it is surreal how they try to pose as The Source of Knowledge. (well if you think about it, "an encyclopeadia that anybody can edit" is not the idea of the century.)
  3. I fear that we see a rise in the attitude of "Action, not reflexion", such that marginal opinions are rarely considered as fairly as mainstream ones.
  4. I was surprised by the amount of voluntary action from reddit, even more since it was only "for the lulz". Great job to all.

I think this would be the only reasonable assumption to make. I don't think anyone would be crazy enough to actually pay for this. Although the idea is pretty great.

47
bobpaul•

It was stated quite clearly in the "questions to seller" that he would only accept money, and not drawings, due to the fact that some monies will be donated to charity. If someone paid with a drawing, he would need to tear the drawing into pieces to share with charity, and that would not be good...

19
[deleted]•

[deleted]

1
otakucode•

Crazy?

Have you actually stopped to think about that?

Give a thought to what makes art valuable. And the role that the Internet may have in determining that in the future. Is it more unreasonable for someone to suppose that this spider, and the history of the meme and such won't be held as "art" in 40 years than it was for someone in a cafe in Spain who saw someone painting noses on the wrong side of faces and heard some positive comments of people nearby and paid a high price for it, believing it might one day be valuable?

At least in this case, you know the work already have the exposure of being known by hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people. The same wouldn't be true if you were buying a painting from a relatively unknown painter or something like that.

This thing has no value as art. Do you really think people with 10Gs to invest in art don't know better than that, even if they know its memehood?

It could be easily duplicated. The 'piece' doesn't stand alone, without the story, for anything.

Dear David, I do not have any money so am sending you this drawing I did of a spider instead. I value the drawing at $10,000 so trust that this settles the matter.

Regards, Ebay buyer.

124
seanalltogether•

I suppose ebay will require a portion of the drawing (like say a spare leg) as compensation for facilitating the transaction.

29
ThickGreenPuke•

They can take one of the four legs on one side. That will make the spider aesthetically pleasing and thus worth more money.

3
jxmitchell•

Actually, that will make the spider into an ant.

9
rigobert•

Not really. Ants have three main body segments- head, thorax, and abdomen, while spiders have two- cephalothorax and abdomen. So taking a leg away would make it a double-amputee spider, not an ant.

9
xxeyes•

How do the seller fees work with these overpriced auctions when the buyer isn't likely to pay? Does anyone know?

0
docgravel•

I tried to sell a shitty laptop on ebay many times and it kept getting purchased for $3000 by Nigerian scammers.

There was no communication needed to refund the fees if I was relisting the item again on ebay. I had to send in an email when I eventually decided not to sell it on ebay at all because of scammers. It was not hard to get out of paying the fees.

4
digital•

Sell it on Craigslist locally, works much better that way

3
