Are your games stuttering lately?

Discussion

I've been battling with stuttering in games for months and really feel defeated over it. I just wanted to know if many others have been suffering with the same issue.

Basically every game stutters and hitches and BF1 is one of the worst. It happens when the standby memory cache eats up all of the free memory. Clearing it seems to reduces the frequency and intensity of the stuttering.

Video example of the stutters (link starts at 1:56, just before a few obvious frametime spikes)

It stutters with frametime spikes in the first half of the video but when I clear the standby memory (2:21) it seems to improve though not resolve. From the MSI afterburner graph you can see the frametime spikes are less frequent and intense than before in the rest of the video (most of the frametime spikes afterwards seem to be from the spawn screen rather than gameplay). I should note that the GPU usage in this video is low because the game is in windowed 720p to make it easier to place monitoring tools next to it. I normally play at 1440p where the usage is usually 100% but still the same stutter (another video example at fullscreen 1440p)

I've had this issue for almost 9 months but can't seem to solve it. Clearing standby helps alleviate the stuttering but it still remains and returns pretty quickly. It's worse the longer the PC has been running and in this video my PC was booted for less than an hour.

I've read pretty much every post in the Nvidia stuttering thread but haven't really heard anything official. I originally found the standby clear suggestion here

Have tried all the usual troubleshooting steps like reinstall windows/drivers, default settings, no 3rd party apps etc but can't seem to resolve the stuttering. Some games are worse than others, even different maps in BF1 have varying frequency of stutter (Amiens being the worst offender).

I just wondered if any of you were also having these issues. I just felt like having a bit of a moan since the stuttering has been sucking the enjoyment out of games for me. The majority of users seem fine, so I'm really curious as to what is causing this issue. Oddly games ran fine on my old 290X but since switching to a GTX 1080 I've been struggling with this issue.

Thanks for reading.

On a side note, I orignally posted this on the Nvidia subreddit but the moderators removed it.

Edit: Wanted to test another game which had a built in benchmarking tool to compare results. Tested Far Cry 5 before and after clearing the standby memory.

Before: https://i.imgur.com/KmtYphX.jpg

After: https://imgur.com/N0MjrCf.jpg

Video link

Before clearing the standby memory there is 3 significant frametime spikes during the benchmark. After clearing there is none. The frametimes are still not great, but at least the huge spikes are gone.

Tested with maximum settings at 720p windowed with 2.0 resolution scale.

Edit 2: To expand with a few more details.

  • The standby cache can grow to large amounts throughout the day. The longer your PC is on the more likely it is to be large and cause problems. The more RAM you have the longer you can use your PC without this issue. If your PC has several hours of uptime and you have used an range of applications, loading a game can trigger these stutters even if you close other background processes. The more applications I use throughout the day (especially RAM heavy like Virtualbox), the larger this cache becomes and more quickly I experience stutter in games, even when these applications are closed during gaming. I know having cache is normal (unused RAM is wasted RAM) but this leads to the next point.

  • It seems that when the game is forced to overwrite standby memory is when the stutter occurs. The cache does fluctuate in size, but when their is low free memory the stutters are severe. Standby memory is not necessarily a problem, providing their is enough free memory. Perhaps their is an issue with how Windows overwrites the memory, but I am only speculating. Performance suffers if it has to overwrite.

  • The contents of the standby memory are mapped files which are often unnecessary. For example, if I played Far Cry 5 in the morning but Battlefield 6 hours later, their will still be large 500MB+ files in the standby cache from Far Cry, despite their being 0 free memory and severe stuttering in Battlefield. Additionally, the same behavior occurs if I watch a media file. It will often be held in the standby cache hours later even when there is no free memory and severe stutter. Removing these improve frametimes considerably.

I am unsure how many others this affects, or even if I'm just barking up the wrong tree, but there have been a few threads with users claiming improvements in stutter from clearing the standby memory. From my testing I have also seen improvements in frametimes by clearing the standby cache.

Final edit: An easy way for me to reproduce this issue is when scanning with Malwarebytes the standby memory rapidly fills and causes issues. When standby memory has eaten all free memory, games stutter. Again clearing the standby list resolves this issue. If I close Malwarebytes the contents it scanned remain in the standby memory ready to cause problems with other applications most noticeably games resulting in frequent frametime spikes (is the latency to overwrite standby memory higher than intended?). Just to clarify, the stutter persists when Malwarebytes is uninstalled however it is an easy way to cause standby memory to eat all free memory in less than a minute. Unless removed manually (or replaced by another process when there is zero free memory) the size of standby memory doesn't seem to shrink.

TL:DR: Games stutter when there is zero free memory and the game is forced to overwrite standby memory. This results in large frametime spikes which are measurable using MSI Afterburner. You can check this by loading 'Resource Monitor' when you're stuttering. If your stuttering improves after clearing standby memory with a tool like RAMMap, you could be suffering from this issue. I am unsure what is causing this issue or why it only affects some users.

r/Nvidia is full of shills, it's no wonder they removed this. Can't have someone say anything bad about their cards.

And back on topic, there are plenty of people in here and in Nvidia's forums with the same problem. There's no fix.

People have gone back to Windows 7 or earlier builds of Windows 10 in order to get rid of this bug. I thought about it myself, but it happens so rarely I haven't bothered. Maybe it's a bigger problem with 1xxx series cards? I have a GTX 970.

Gigabytes1337OP•

In the removed thread on r/Nvidia there were several users who suggested that it affects Pascal most. One said he was fine on a 980Ti till moving to Pascal whilst another said he was fine on a 750Ti before switching.

It's very odd that it has been an issue for almost a year but there has been almost no official word (that I have seen at least) on the issue or potential fix from either Microsoft or Nvidia.

22
IWillBeNice•

There have been several official words on it, as well as a couple of patches from both Windows and specific driver updates for it.

3
Gigabytes1337OP•

Do you have any links handy as I haven't been able to find official patches or updates which address the stuttering issue, particularly the one which improves once you clear the standby memory.

Only ones I remember was for Pascal DPC latency but mine seems fine having monitored it with a range of tools.

areithropos•

Funny. So, basically we could wait a year or two for Nvidia and Microsoft to get things working 😂 .

3
atistang•

I have an RX480 and I have the exact same issue as the OP.

I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one.

6
DnBDeafNBlind•

Have the same card, had a couple hiccups for a day but after that nothing.

3
Megabyte2•

I posted in your last nvidia topic and was not surprised when it was taken down. Anything negative there is removed.

Anyways I also have the exact same stutter. Games freeze just like your video and standby RAM becomes huge. Clearing it with EmptyStandByList works wonders.

96
JAD2017•

Ah, but it's not because of that... it's because there's a "technical support megathread"....

(Yes, I'm being sarcastic, r/NVIDIA is a fanboyism club).

Pegaz7•

How to exactly clean standby ram?

6
Megabyte2•

I use the method here

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/7a0763/standby_memory_issue_causing_stutters_on_creators/

or you can do it manually with an application called RAMmap like OP showed in the first video.

8
baris6655•

Hey does this still work ?

1
Max1boy•

I also had this problem, especially with Battlefield 1 and Farcry 5, using EmptyStandByList did help. I decided to try and upgrade my Windows 10 from 1709 Fall Creators to 1803 Spring Creators using insider preview and I can confirm after about a day of playing that the stutters are 100% gone even without using EmptyStandByList.

6
GanjaAllDay•

complete noob here, what did you do exactly?

3
Max1boy•

I joined the windows 10 insider program https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028370/windows-join-the-windows-insider-program after that windows will update to latest insider build.

3
Aristae•

stutters still happening after upgrading to 1803. I'm running in rust and my frame freezes, I swap weapons my frame freezes, I look around my frame freezes, Im standing still type this on my second monitor and I my frame froze while I was in a bush AFK. There are huge dips on my GPU usage when it happens.

Im running Ryzen 2600, 8GB 3000Mhz and a GTX 980Ti. I never had this problem running 8.1 Pro on my old pc, my current pc is no more than 2 months old. I also had this problem using 16GB so its not the ram.

The 1803 makes the EmptyStandByList method pointless because its not needed using 1803. Was running a 4790k 970 sc acx 2.0 and 16gb on my old pc.

1

Did you manage to fix it, i even reverted back to anniversary update to no avail, 1700x and 1080, but an old HDD, stuttering even in older games like Witcher 3 and Team Fortress 2, Rocket League

1
85218523•

This is what happens when you have constant updates. It's impossible for developers to keep up with nearly every patch breaking something new for a select few groups of people. It's just an endless stream of shit breaking. Seriously, every patch is a new wave of complaints that something is broken or not working properly.

Windows 10 needs to revamp their feature updates and leave forced updates for security fixes and defender definitions only.

76
aveyo•

Why is this controversial, dear r/Windows10 redditors?
It's exactly the root issue.
Why does the exact same system work fine under previous versions of Windows?

Guess what, on latest hardware the obvious fix of going back to Windows 8.1 or 7 does not work - you can't even install it - Microsoft made sure of that with the deal with Intel and AMD..

17
beabeaayyte•

It's exactly the root issue. Why does the exact same system work fine under previous versions of Windows?

You've got this backwards.

Its not the responsibility of Windows to support Nvidia's hardware, its Nvidia's responsibility to support Windows on their hardware. The same as any other hardware vendor who has to maintain their drivers as well.

Nvidia hardware working "fine" on older versions is not some magical Windows thing, its because Nvidia themselves are supporting those older versions of Windows. Conversely Nvidia hardware breaking on newer Windows 10 builds is the result of Nvidia NOT supporting these newer builds in a timely manner and not "because Windows".

Nvidia is a hardware partner, they get far more information on upcoming builds and what will be changing with regards to the graphics stack and related subsystems than we'll ever get. If Nvidia can't be bothered to be prepared and to not have their products break or work suboptimally despite Microsoft throwing them all the bones in the world I don't know what you expected.

Btw, this isn't new behavior from Nvidia, this is exactly how it plays out on Linux as well. Kernel update comes out, breaks something in Nvidia's driver, Nvidia takes their sweet ass time fixing it. This is despite kernel development happening in the open and they can see just like anyone else, line by line in the code, what is changing. So its not surprising that their shitty behavior extends to Windows.

New feature updates come out once every 6 months and fully functional stable beta builds are available for ~3 months before that and it takes ~3 months for the updates to reach everyone (some people are still getting the November Fall Creator's Update). Also, feature updates can be deferred (I believe on these dates) for 60 days on Home, 6 months on Pro and indefinite for Enterprise.

That gives Nvidia a clear 6 months window to benchmark and test their cards for known issues. If they find one, they could, you know communicate to the public and say defer your feature updates until they resolve it.

This is not a new issue for Nvidia, it is one of the primary reasons I have never bought any of their cards. Even when Windows 10 came out, which had over a year of betas and a 3+ month RTM period for manufacturers, day one, Nvidia cards were broken day 1.

When the majority of your business operates on customer graphics cards, your company should not be this fucking bad at it. AMD does not have issues keeping up with feature updates.

7
Solar_Sails•

Not to mention the sly 'beta' features and services they install without your knowledge and without actually being in the insider rings.

6
JonRedcorn862•

I noticed going from my 290 to this 1070 that my overall user experience is significantly worse. I was shocked to see Nvidia was still using their same control panel they've been using for over 10 years. Stutters, other driver issues. But hey at least the frame counter says 60 right?

29
umar4812•

I can't help you, OP, but just to make sure: anyone who plays GTA Online, do NOT use memory cleaning programs. It flags the game's anticheat and you'll be banned.

21
undon3•

That's dumb, you don't need to use it during the game, just before you launch it.

3
umar4812•

GTA, like every world game, caches data not currently being used. This can be anything, from scripts to vehicle models to pedestrian models to audio files, and more. These get marked as non-important (I don't know what the technical RAM term is for it) in RAM, so if another program requests it, GTA 5 will clear it out to let the other program run. Memory cleaning programs will cause GTA Online to flag you as a cheater because it directly removes all of GTA 5's cached contents.

1
labowsky•

Lol so you're telling me if I restart my computer I would get banned?

GTA V is not constantly reading your memory when the process is dead unless their anti cheat is constantly running (which I doubt is the case). GTA V would not be storing data in RAM after its process is shut down.

2
umar4812•

I meant that if it's run while the game is running, you genius.

1
skadoodleboop•

Nah, haven't been yet.

You got lucky. Most people have been for using one. Either that or the anti cheat has been modified to correctly identify memory cleaning programs.

I couldn't really notice a stutter on OPs videos (I'm watching from my mobile), but my 1080 has been great when I use a single monitor. When I enable my second monitor output (which goes to my TV) I get some consistent stutter.

Is this the stutter that's being discussed?

1
Megabyte2•

People may have varying sensitivity to the stutter. Personally I could see it pretty clearly, sort of like freezing for a spilt second or a 'choppy' feeling. But I am on a desktop watching it at 1080p/60FPS. I can imagine it could be more difficult to tell on mobile.

I get similar stutter with a single monitor

SLI and Windows 10 have had UI bugs since Windows 10 came out, on the level of entire buttons not rendering after running a fullscreen application.

Neither Nvidia or Microsoft have fixed it in the last 4 years.

Hi, I've been through your situation and I hope you find a solution. My story is this, I come from a 980 ti of msi and had no problems. I decided to buy a Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 Ti AMP Extreme Core Edition, which took me a month and when I arrived, I installed it then spent a couple of hours playing BT1 began the stuttering. It was frustrating, I tried everything, cables for the monitor, the second PCI port, even intale windows with only origin, BT1 and the basic drivers and problem ... another lost month. Talk to my salesman and I could change an ASUS ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-O11G thinking that the other 1080 ti was defective. when I got the new (poom) the same problem ... After a while a play friend told me to try this

GamingStandby memory issue causing stutters on creators It was the only thing that worked for me and I'm currently on W10 V1709. Apologies for my bad english is that I am using the google translator ... Greetings from Uruguay

IWillBeNice•

On the Nvidia side of things this was fixed several driver versions ago. I know because I had issues with stuttering on my 1080 for months - since the first Creator's Update.

Windows wise, you need to be up to date and in any games that you're having stuttering with, disable "full screen optimisations" and also tick "override scaling".

(edit) Also, if you have two monitors, make sure they're running at the same refresh rate. This might mean setting one to 59Hz (because some monitors actually run at 59.x instead of 60) or, if you have two screens with different refresh rates, ensure that they are multiples of each other, i.e. one at 60 and one at 120, not 60 and 144 or 75 and 120.

That solved all my issues with regards to stuttering.

12
Gigabytes1337OP•

Thank you for the suggestions however, I'm already on the latest Nvidia driver and Windows version.

I have also tried playing around with full screen optimisations and override scaling but sadly it does not seem to improve the stuttering.

6
IWillBeNice•

Set your power plan in Windows to high performance and in Nvidia control panel to Optimal or Max performance.

If none of those solutions work you might actually have a different issue that presents with the same symptoms.

2

Have tweaked the power plans and also disabled all power saving in the BIOs but with no improvement either unfortunately.

Everything has been butter smooth for me since.
