Ancient Constructs in incursions are a bit too good against evasion builds. (Physical+Chaos spell damage)

Fluff

Typically you wouldn't encounter packs of 10 or more of these enemies outside of Atziri, but incursions bring this problem to almost every map you run.

They start their attack animation almost instantly, and due to it counting as a spell, evasion does nothing against it, same goes for dodge and blind. Even with 30% spell dodge from phase acrobatics, you can still get gunned down from offscreen, or as soon as you turn a corner or open a door.

This leads to a major imbalance in character defenses between builds. Why should a player invest into evasion at all when incursions are packed full of these enemies around every corner?

A character running CI with even a small amount of armor can easily ignore 90-95% of their damage, due to armor being more effective against smaller hits, and 100% chaos resist ignoring the rest.

These enemies turn into the most dangerous non-boss enemy in the entire game for many builds, due to their long range, nearly instant attack animation+fast projectile speed, as well as being a Physical+Chaos spell.

They can also be in huge packs, which along with a few map mods, can often lead to 40+ Ancient constructs firing at you the moment you move in an incursion, or even just turning a corner.

Feel free to share your instant-death stories against these creatures if you wish.

Edit: There is no "crying" in my post, it's called player feedback. The skill they use looks like it should be an attack to begin with, not a spell.

The animation does not give the idea of a "spell" at all. Yes, there are several ways to mitigate the damage, but should these enemies really be that abundant in incursions compared to everything else? There are at least 9 different enemy types that can spawn in incursions, yet Ancient Constructs can consist of large portions of each incursion. They also have much higher damage and attack speed compared to Serpentine Constructs, which can also appear in incursions, yet the snakes are much weaker and do attack damage, which can be evaded. I feel there needs to be a better balance in packs between Serpentine Constructs and Ancient Constructs, not just 50 ancient constructs as you enter a room.

Ive died against these quite a bit, I actually run a magic ame flask(im a summoner so atziris nothing 2 me) and it helps alot I keep up my armor and chaos res flask and they do like 60% less damage, almost completely able to ignore them with flasks up.

So yeah id suggest getting an amethyst flask it really does help.

DerpAtOfficeNecromancer•

Is it just me or Incursion monsters are way too strong compare to the same level mobs? I mean lv 70 Incursion/Temple mobs is hitting harder then red maps AND having 3 times more health, at least.

On top of that their melee attack has a blink/dash effect and always hit you, their ranged attack has chaos, and they turn into ghost and you cannot hit them for a few seconds. Abyss mobs can ghost too but they always go for you instead of running in circles while in ghost form.

I seriously think they should either tune up the normal mobs a little (at least to abyss mobs level, and buff abyss to temple level) or they should bring temple mobs down in line with abyss mobs.

Or you know, make abyss mobs do more damage while temple mobs have more health (or the other way around) instead of giving temple mobs both super damage and super health.

aoeoeaaoeAAAAAAAAAAAAAA•

idk, i feel like they are at a very nice level of damage and hp tbh, im finally scared to leapslam into a pack without endurency charges up.

So basically Abyss are too weak and normal mobs are too trash. It would be a lot better if they balance things out.

I'm playing EV based FB damage wise it's manageable (5k life until I link my belly), tho you have to be careful when engaging those constructs.

However I think mobs are a bit too tanky. If you roll T3 increased life for the temple, then OMG lvl 76 mobs are worse than T16 ones and that does nothing but enforcing pure focus on your character dps - in other words, dps becomes best defense - the faster you kill the less dangerous shit is.

All in all - it's manageable, but change of pace when you go to temple is absurd, literally day and night difference. No previous league trash mobs were such an outliner to rest of content.

I don't find most do, just the chaos dmg ones really. Trying to get a bit of chaos resists right now on my char to test difference. I think to this point most people ignored chaos res since it rarely came into play, having a major part of the game dish out good chunks of it now is a rather big change.

2
ixNVD•

I think they are tankier than normal mobs outside of incursions. It became less of an issue once I got more damage of course.

1
troglodyte•

I think for the most part it works because the Temple gives you insane items to compensate for the much harder mobs you encounter, but it can definitely trap you in a vicious cycle while leveling where you can't kill the souped-up Incursion/Temple mobs to link your temple, which means you can't get the insane items to kill the Architects and survive the powerful mobs in Incursions... which means you can't link a temple to get items.

I have one friend who just disengaged with the Incursions on his run through till someone threw him some good gear for exactly this reason. By Act 3 or so (which feels ludicrously early to me) you really want to doing Temple-gear-fueled DPS if you hope to continue doing temples.

It's an interesting design choice, for sure. Either way I suspect we won't see too many balance changes during the league, but I'd be pretty disappointed if this made it into the main game without a quick pass. I really don't think Shadestalkers and Ancient Constructs should make it into the core game unmodified; the former is the most unpleasant mob base to fight they've ever designed, and the latter is brutal for Evasion.

1
DerpAtOfficeNecromancer•

I failed super early temples since I dont have damage, was rolling over them all the way to 65 or so, and now I am 70 and they start one-shotting me randomly and everything is resisting elemental damage and I can kill them fast anymore....

1

The 11 incursions b4 the temple give about 20x more loot.

Idk man I picked up a solid 90% chaos res bringing me to about 30ish and I don't have too many issues.

1
Magnum256•

The incursion mobs are fine. The game was becoming stupidly easy compared to the old days. Like 4 years ago a rare Rhoa could charge at you and kill you in one hit, two if you were lucky. It's nice that there's actually some scary random monster packs in the game again.

1
Baptism-Of-Fire•

Here we go again

Game is kinda hard I can't just mindlessly shield charge through everything, GGG please fix!

-1
DerpAtOfficeNecromancer•

Maybe try reading next time? I said they should BALANCE the mobs. Buff abyss and normal mobs OR nerf temple mobs to bring them in line with abyss, OR make abyss temple mobs excels in different fields (damage/health).

1
mindtrix0•

I had atziri's and insta died to 2 of those mobs with bloodlines mod and had 4.6k hp, in a LEVEL 72 incursion!!! Their animation is the biggest problem, sometimes you spawn into an incursion, the one without walls and about 4 packs of them shoot at you at the same time.

Do NOT use golems as they trigger their animation while you have the immunity buff. Generally golems are terrible and get you killed more than they should.

1
sebroskiChieftain•

At least you can build specifically against it. Rack up spell dodge and chaos res, for example. Avoidance is low investment high efficiency, and is a bit too cost effective, so I don't think it's too bad to have a single weakness.

Edit: Let me add that those monsters are indeed too common for an Evasion type build. But I think adapting by playing other sorts of builds instead of expecting 1 build to tackle everything, is the fun part of PoE.

For example, in the HC Flackback league, almost everyone would run maximum avoidance builds with Phase acro and perma Vaal Grace, specifically because it was good for dealing with the rippy mechanics. Maybe this league, CI builds are better just to be able to do Incursions safely.

50
ChaosAEStandard•

Yea CI is gonna be great, and RF is gonna suck with the tier 3 corruption room giving -10% max res.

As for one build tackling everything, only thing I have found in that boat is CI death's oath.

Can that really do all content? Like Uber Elder etc? I haven't seen one that could but you've piqued my interest.

2
ChaosAEStandard•

Would just need some good rares maybe envy crafted rings, would probably be a rather slow fight. This is the guide I follow The impressence is amazing although for uber elder you might want a witchfire and a high es marble amulet for more regen. I've done shaper with it myself, but my gear is kinda mid tier for the build so with good gear uber elder should't be a problem.

Bosses aside, you can run any combination of map mods. Vaal a map and it bricks into No regen, no leech, double reflect? Not a problem.

2
Smooshfaced•

yeah, as a slow boss killer, I'm not sure uber elder is going to be doable, maybe, but I thought there was a definite DPS check at a point where if your DPS is below a certain point, it's just not possible to do that fight, but I could be wrong.

Still, almost all content is good, I just hadn't heard of a DO character being able to do ALL content.

2
boredasshitrightnowNecromancer•

Witchfire does not scale off of curse effect.
Blasphemy depair is likely better

1
genuinewoodwiki editor/vegan SSF•

"Avoidance" is technically a different mechanic and is counted separately from (multiplicatively with) Dodge, Evasion, and Block. You can find it on some uniques including Voidwalker and some essence mods. Some Pantheon powers also give avoidance chance.

2
Add32•

The problem isn't one build, it's a whole defensive attribute. Telling a whole group of players to skip the league mechanic because their defenseive stat was the wrong type isn't cool. Besides evasion is already more vunerable to oneshots.

1
sebroskiChieftain•

And that's where our opinions differ. I think that it's nice that not all builds can tackle all content.

Even in this particular case, there is a option for these builds, and that's to cap chaos res.

1
Add32•

If it was specific content (one boss / map) i would agree, but this is a the whole league mechanic.... kinda the reason most people come back to play poe now

1
sebroskiChieftain•

What defensive mechanics would non evasion characters have over evasion characters when it comes to chaos damage?

Most mitigation based characters have a lot of physical and elemental mitigation. That's why the complaint that Evasion builds tending to get one shot isn't valid.

There is absolutely no excuse. Stack up life and chaos res, just like all other classes have to.

1
itsJets•

I got downvoted in the ziz rip thread yesterday for saying theyre op

I already know if just one mob gets nerfed from incursion its 100% going to be those

31
Drop_•

Yeah their target acquisition range and the fact that the projectiles are spells make them really nuts.

If they were attack projectiles it would be different.

15
T3hSwagmanTrickster•

Incursions are just rough because most of them have very narrow hallways. Trying to beef up my chaos resist now but going CINas a second character is looking tempting.

5
KhalkuAccount: Kuram•

Nah, the absolutely biggest issue is that projectile mobs all shoot at the same time. There should be some logic built into discrete mob packs that stagger shots from ranged mobs on target acquisition.

It is worse than jumping into a pack and having them all swing at once, because ranged mobs can acquire you from off-screen making it that much more difficult to avoid. Doorways create incredibly dangerous chokepoints. If you saw ziz's rip clip, the entire pack that killed him was offscreen, and he logged out almost instantly and still died.

However, I figure his chaos res was probably really low. I got mine up to -1 and these things are way less dangerous than they were before.

4
Facelessone001Dominus•

This is it exactly. You either dont get hit or you fucking take every single one. I understand this game needs one shot mechanics that are telegraphed and all, but those dudes with turbo is just not fun

2
Striker654•

What might be cool is if they didn't have perfect accuracy so it's not trivial to dodge them by moving a bit but it also doesn't 100% screw you if you're animation locked when they first see you

2
Striker654•

They have something built in for abilities. The old leapers used to all jump you simultaneously but now they have a global cooldown.

2
-Yazilliclick-•

Are they strong? Sure. But they can be defended against. I don't think it's a good reaction to immediately look to nerf something just because the first introductions to it result in some RIPs. If there are no defenses for it and people can't build around it after a while then sure.

0
MilkysliceChieftain•

With all the offensive powercreep there is room to gear for defence against dangerous encounter.

Spelldodge via phase acro, boot corruption/enchant, pantheon (including 10% projectile avoidance).

spellblock is a thing, fortify helps against both sources, chaos resist is a thing for one part, phys to ele dmg for another part with several sources.

Then there are more "odd" options like cwdt frostwall or cold spell + prolif besides the obvious thing to just stay mobile if possible.

I dont see a problem with them especially because we know that the mobtype is frequently popping up in incursions/temple and not something that happens every 200 maps.

make monsters great again!

27
SirTuber•

The issue is less their raw damage, but the application of that raw damage. It's not uncommon to see two back-to-back bursts be fired at you from offscreen before you can open a door and finish a leapslam. Every other creature in Incursions and Temples has fairly clear telegraphs and/or sensible actions you can react to even with equal or superior damage.

I love dangerous creatures and notorious threats (I long for the days where it was wise to grind for a sapphire ring before Merveil in Act 1N), but they can be really dishearteningly unfair if you didn't know what was coming.

11
oboejdub•

this is how the monsters feel about us clearing them in one volley from off-screen.

7
SirTuber•

I'll admit I'm not really a fan of nuPoE's obsession with off-screen one-shotting packs while hurtling yourself across the map at full speed either.

4
jokomulfuck HoGM it's not even a real map•

Agreed. My evasion arc trapper has enough dps so I dropped some damage nodes for phase acro and bought a 3c pair of Atziri's Step. That 45% spell dodge alone makes them much more manageable. I haven't even needed to futz with pantheon yet.

2
sergeantminorChampion•

Seems like every league I invest in a 16% pair of Atziri's Step with the 8% spell dodge enchant. It's always been dirt cheap because no one else seems to value spell dodge. I'm happy to see monsters tough enough to encourage thinking about defenses. Tired of this mentality where people complain instead of adapting to changes.

1
Facelessone001Dominus•

I think its really people complaining that they are forced to use things like that when they just want to run the league content. Which is frustrating, but a bit reasonable.

1
sergeantminorChampion•

So they don't want to invest in defense? Sounds about par for the course.

2
jokomulfuck HoGM it's not even a real map•

forced to use things like that

Like what? Defenses? Evasion builds have always had to find other ways to deal with phys and chaos spell damage and there are several ways to do it. Dodge, chaos res, block, flasks. This is absolutely not a case of certain builds being forced to use one specific mechanic.

2
KhalkuAccount: Kuram•

I don't notice a huge difference with phase acro (had it the entire time), but I got my chaos res to -1 and that was very noticeable.

1
EymouChampion•

You will LOVE it. I'm switching to low life whenever I will get blessing of chayula, but I'm leveling so nicely on yellow maps with 4.5k ES(200es 6L chest bought for 20c) chaos immunity, and a huge evasion given by jade flask of reflexes + permablind. Never felt so defensive. And I'm not missing at all tinkerskin, I used it for a life trapper in 3.0 but we definitely do not need it. The only issue of this build is the mana management, i have 320 mana not reserved and I need to use mana flask after 5 casts. Bosses are a breeze with vaal clarity.

1
Some1Random•

Yeah I think this is the main trade off, I had to swap my plan from EB + Tinkerskin to CI just to deal with this stuff better and you then need a new plan for mana management :)

e_LionElementalist•

How is it damage wise considering you can't use shimmerons? I did play arc mines last league and the damage was really over the top. This league my buddy is playing the same build and the damage is even higher. Would you care to share a PoB link for your build?

1

Oh, you're not even using Tinkerskin yet and have CI? Good to know. Maybe I'll switch earlier than planned.

1
-Yazilliclick-•

Was thinking of switching to CI but playing SSF and never really done CI so has me worried. How's it feeling? Any key items you needed?

1
engharat•

I think it is perfectly viable as SSF, you will just have less a bit ES / crit chance. I have bought a nice 252 ES 63% crit chance for spells shield that will require some currency to be crafted. Anyway, the key items are chest and shield and because you are SSF you need to craft them. Spam alt/augs until you get t1-t2 +maximum energy shield, regal, craft increased ES and you are good to go, on a vaal regalia and harmonic or titanium spirit shield. If you are planning of getting 6L from chest, before spending your precious fusing you could spam some chaos on the chest trying to get t1-t2 maximum ES and increased ES; this will give a huge ES boost to your character, but it is not needed until endgame content. if you farm atziri you can easily get the vertex mask that is perfect for its huge ES and evasion bonus, and it will pump your early level 2 enlighten to level 3, helping with mana reservation. wrath + discipline will be your auras sin trek as boots, and on rings amulet belt and gloves you will use any rare you find in order to fix resists and get some es(esp. gloves belt and amulet) as weapon you can drop some strong 90% increased trap damage wand in temple. I bought it anyway: craft on it inc. crit chance for spells or spell damage.

3
-Yazilliclick-•

Thanks for detailed answer! I did find heartbreaker last night and some decent es rings so was considering it. Might give some crafting a try.

1
engharat•

So, at the end, you can switch to ES as soon as: you get some alts and you craft shield and chest you get the vertex from regular atziri you drop sin trek boots ( not so hard to drop, or you can use some other ES boots dropped/crafted with decent movement speed) as soon as you have those 4 components, you can switch to ES successfully. :) make sure to take both CI and zealoth oath keystone obviously ;-)

1
Some1Random•

You just need high ES gear. I am chewing through yellow maps fine with only 5500 ES since I play guild SSF and it seems fine for now. I wouldn't swap unless you can hit 4500-5000 though.

1
non-zer0•

Crafting decent ES gear really isn’t too bad. I did it back during breach and reached 6.5k ES without very much trouble.

1

5
DerpAtOfficeNecromancer•

My main issue of playing ES builds is that ES gears seems to be 3 times the price of life gears. A barely 100 ES boots with resists is already 30+ chaos while I can get that perfect move speed with around 10c and 80+ life.

4
bah_si_en_faitEshDidNothingWrong•

Rainbowstrides are 1 Alch, 100 ES, 20% all res and 25% MS. Along with all the goodies they give.
Steppan Eards are 150ES with 30% MS for 2 chaos.

Just stop going for the rares, people don't know how to price them on the low end.

11
shadowrealmsMildCredibility•

Thats most likely because they require more mods to work togheter which is harder to craft obviously and quite unlikely to drop.

You need flat es, % es and if you can get intelligence as well so thats 3 rolls already while the other 3 most likely are going to be resistances.

That makes them a bit more expensive plus es is not really meta so less people crafting ES gear that too .

3
jjohnp•

Unless your build absolutely requires resists on boots (in which case it's probably not the state of ES gear that's the problem), there is no reason to use rare boots instead of Sin Trek.

Every single one of my deaths this league (bar one to normal lab because I'm an idiot) is due to dying to ancient constructs during incursions. Every one of my deaths is pretty much an instigib as I get hit with two dozen projectiles simultaneously running through a doorway. It's still rare that I die since I play around it, but these are definitely the most lethal mobs of the league. They need toned down in either damage numbers or pack size.

7
SirEbonwolfwitch•

Or you need to get some defense for them. Chaos resistance, spell dodge/block, phys mit. It's pretty easy to build against.

There's no way to "learn to play" when 20 of these mobs one shot you (together) as soon as you leave the grace period.

You can say "learn to play" all you want, but this is exactly the type of gameplay GGG has steered away from in the past (monsters syncing kill projectile attacks together for maximum damage).

It's telling almost half the thread has your attitude. I'm guessing you aren't playing evasion.

Cwdt+ic and having non-negitive chaos res makes it into a tickle. Yes it is a little over tuned... But it is far from insurmountable.

0
carlovski99•

Issue is for ages everyone said don't bother with chaos res. There isn't that much damage and most of it is DoT so more life and regen is a better allround defense. But these do all front loaded hit damage. I ended up taking phase acro earlier than normal, getting a little bit of chaos res and getting some spell dodge boots (needed resistances so got temple mod ones rather than atziri steps). Helps a lot. I actually like the fact players have had to think a bit about the defense on their builds. Probably a bit rough in hardcore though!

6
ScienceFictionGuy•

due to it counting as a spell, evasion does nothing against it, same goes for dodge and blind.

This explains A LOT, my trapper keeps dieing to these and he's no slouch on defenses otherwise.

With all of the new chaos damage enemies added to temple I think you pretty much have no choice but to invest in chaos resistance this league, which I guess is probably a good thing for overall balance. The fact that 95% of builds let their chaos res sit at -60% wasn't a good thing.

Plus it gives CI a reason to exist again.

I feel like mobs in Inursions and Temple are overtuned in general though. Much more life and damage than expected, even from League content. And insane chaos damage seems ro be EVERYWHERE for me, not just Contstructs.

So that's what just insta-killed me in my first map incursion. 70 levels of barely getting touched then I do the Alva thing on my first map and bam!, a dozen purple snake-shooty-guys gangbang me 300ms after right-clicking out of grace period. I had no idea that counted as a spell.

You are absolutely right and this leads to the main topic :

Armour and Evasion need to be entirely reworked.

Having huge amounts of armour does nothing against hard hitting bosses while evasion is getting less and less effective on higher levels, and 50% evasion is something everyone can get who doesnt go for that one keystone that sets it to 0% chance simply because the blind mechanic exists and you can get that easily through 1 flask or just jewels.

Meanwhile even then evasion does nothing against spells, only dodge does and the sources of spell dodge are pretty limited.

All this is what made just stacking insane numbers of energy shield in the past so profitable as you could just leech everything back you get hit for and today with just slight variations the same thing applies to life and energy shield again. Evasion is simply in a very bad position and so is Armour. The phys resistant tanky builds that exist dont even get their tankyness through armour but through flat phys reduction thanks to stuff like endurance charges, chest mods and so on or simply take phys dmg as elemental damage.

Yes, I've taken a habit of baiting their first attack before attacking them, then it goes usually smoothly.

As an eva/acro character, I've had more trouble against those ghosts which dash over a long distance, then become "phased" (I lose track of them), then attack with a long distance projectile... Those are a problem to me alongside one shot from unsuspecting vaal constructs.

The raw amount of attacks shot at us really make it challenging to survive in incursions. I must say I like that and dislike that at the same time, as it is challenging and sometimes too unforgiving in my opinion.

People cried at abyss and bestiary monsters too. It is so disappointing they got nerfed hard.

Tbh some abyss monsters were untargatable and one shot you with crits there was no counterplay. You can't kill it, he will 1shot you, where is the fun in that. That cycloning weird skele's with increase crits and untargetable was a pain in the ass, killed you really quick and had 2 or more budies with him.

As far as temples go i find the tp attack dudes and shadowwalkers(that dude that goes inv and leaves ghostly trails) dealing absurd damage for how tanky they are. For example skeletons in general can 1 shot you but they are fragile, so if you are paying attention you won't die to them. Izaro is also a fair fight, no bs 1 shot, everything is clear, in incursions sometimes i die at the start because 2 packs of consctructs happen to be near spawn insta killing me, that is no fun. A player with good skill should be rewarded for playing the game correctly, not playing it enough to afford really good items and win that way.

They weren't a threat at all when you had correct defenses. I was very confused by all the complain threads at the start of abyss.

These guys killed me a lot of times too but i don't come bitching on reddit and instead i think to myself what can i do to fix my defenses. There are so many defenses in this game but people just want to gottagofast and ignore all the possible defensive layers.

Also, there is like 1 topic on the front page every month about the fact that monsters kill players only with on kill effects (bearers, porcupines, etc). We finally have monsters that fight back again and now people complain that some monsters can fight back.

Monsters fighting back != bs 1 shots. If they deal too much damage they should be fragile or the attacks should be telegraphed, there should be a counter play rather than have better gear. Where is the skill in playing the game where your gear is the most important thing and mechanics don't matter. I mean i don't say gear should not be important, but player skill should be the main focus of adjusting difficulty. I'm okay with shaperslam 1 shotting since it is a well telegraphed skill, i'm not okay with constructs 1 shotting people in spawn out of screen.

The worst part is that they can spawn right by the entrance in Incursions. Even with decent defenses, I've been one shot by them when entering Incursions in high density maps.

Wish they'd do away with shit like that. Some incursions you just start off being surrounded. 4.5k hp 2.5k mana mom and I die instantly in red maps before getting a totem to cast arc.

I think the temple monsters are a lot closer to what it should be like doing normal mapping. You actually have to pay attention sometimes and it's completely manageable if you're using the right defence.
