Guys this is a joke post.

It’s labeled as humor though, so everyone upvoting knows it’s a joke. I think this post is making fun of the one posted here earlier with the girl that thought flat stomachs were unhealthy because your organs would have to squish too much.

I didnt see that until now actually, it doesn't come up on mobile while scrolling

Question for anyone out there-I know that lots of people with uteruses have a little bit of fat on their abdomen (I do, and I'm pretty skinny everywhere else), but since fat distribution is linked to hormones do trans women get it too?

173
orangepeeling•

That bit of belly fat has nothing to do with uteruses though (unsure if you’re aware of this, hard to ascertain from your comment.) The uterus is well protected deep inside your abdomen, it’s not on the surface of one’s body, and plenty of women with lower body fat percentages don’t have that bit of fat at all.

A lot of men carry a bit of fat in that same area as well. Excess bodyfat can be stored anywhere but it is common to appear first in the abdomen regardless of gender.

204
WildStarBerry•

I was about to say, I've seen relatively slim men with that pooch so I wonder how sex linked it even is.

77
orangepeeling•

Unfortunately, in my experience, women seemed a lot more socialized to make up excuses for their weight/bodies than men are because there’s a lot more shame associated with overweight women than overweight men.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve known plenty an overweight man who calls their body type “athletic” on dating profiles, or insists “it’s all muscle!” But men seem to have less shame about being overweight than women do, so they (anecdotally) are more likely to admit that yeah, they’re just overweight due to poor choices; whereas a lot of women I know will admit they’re overweight, but it’s because of starvation mode, their genetics, their uterus, their body type, their age, etc etc etc. The uterus theory is just a good one that gets perpetuated because it absolves women of any accountability at all.

Edit: changed “blame” to accountability.

64
downtherabbithole-•

That's not to say that some fat in that area is completely normal at a healthy weight.

17
WildStarBerry•

Yeah, I have a friend that always says it's all muscle, she just can't get a flat stomach, it's all going to her boobs, yada yada. I just accept that she's okay with her body (and she looks only a little overweight anyways) but roll my eyes when she tries to say weight loss isn't as simple as CICO for some people. Weight loss is hard to do but the concept is in fact simple.

tylminBreastfeeding deflates your breasts!•

Men are more likely to put fat around the waist, women are more likely to put it around the hips and thighs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5291139/

42
WildStarBerry•

Yes, I already knew that. Though the pooch is actually lower belly fat I think so it's not quite around the waist.

14
DeathIsAnArt36Same old sin with a new spin•

I assume the reason they went with people with uteruses instead of women is because they're talking specifically about people born with "female" bodies

9
daria_arbuz•

but I've noticed this pouch bloat up a bit before the periods or is it just my imagination? 🤔

7
MeleMallory•

That’s probably water retention, not related to the uterus itself.

8
orangepeeling•

Either imagination or coincidence. Likely water retention if it’s not your imagination.

The uterus may swell up to 10-15% before a period occurs, but that’s not likely to cause a noticeable change on the outside of your body.

Even if your uterus did swell a significant amount, it’s not creating that little belly pooch; that belly pooch is a collection of body fat, and it can occur in both men and women, regardless of fertility or menstrual status. Anecdotal personal experience does not replace medical science. It’s not due to a uterus.

3
daria_arbuz•

aight thanks!

1
IDLToN•

I'm a trans man, I've been on testosterone for like 2.5 years ish. I have a flat stomach, I still have a uterus. I used to have a lot more fat on my stomach and hips. Though a lot of trans men say that their fat goes from their hips and ass to their stomachs. From what I've seen from videos of trans women discussing their HRT changes, they'll get more fat on their stomachs and hips. But I don't really know much of that and I'm not certain. Idk if that helps or answers your question at all haha

10

Not for a while, over the past few months I've started and I've seen some significant body fat redistribution, but there was plenty before then too. So sorta?

1
GypsyBagelhands•

I read somewhere that women even with very low body fat percentages have them. It's theorized that it's a store for if they're breastfeeding and in famine conditions so they can still feed their infants.

23
cribbsjy•

It's just a fat store. Lose fat weight, and it will go away.

20
TopherMarlowe•

No. Portia de Rossi almost starved herself to death and said she still had some of the belly fat that bothered her so much, and had to come to terms with the fact that it would never go away.

72

Skinny fat is a thing. No amount of skinniness will look good without some muscle mass. Spend 2 minutes on Instagram and you will see plenty of healthy women without a pooch.

Edit. And body dismorphia is definitely a thing. And it's a bitch.

5†

2
SarcasticCannibal•

Truth. M male, have been losing weight gradually for years and still with the tummy fat and the lovehandles

I think abdomen fat is just a human thing intended to keep those organs safe.

7
BiBiBicycle•

If you've lost a lot of weight it might also be a result of loose skin as well, which can take a lot longer to resolve than the weight loss, especially if you lose it fast.

4
octopushotdog•

Lol at people down voting a simple truth

-1†
BiBiBicycle•

It's the absolute last fat a lot of people will lose, so you may well die before losing it

43
daria_arbuz•

I've been told by my doc that it's a natural protection against stretch marks in case of pregnancy 🤔

2
MeleMallory•

You should probably get a new doctor...

7
OldBoyDM•

Men actually will have more chance of having fat accumulating more at the abdomen. But when women have babies or go through menopause it is much more likely for then to get this sort of fat distribution

14
Bearacolypse•

There are hormones which affect fat distribution but it's not something you can alter. One can have less bodyfat or more but where it is distributed is pretty much genetic.

9
tylminBreastfeeding deflates your breasts!•

Men are more likely to put fat around the waist, women are more likely to put it around the hips and thighs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5291139/

7
ChocolateMilkCows•

Actually, testosterone tends to make one store more fat in their midsection, particularly visceral fat around the internal organs. This is why overweight men are more likely to have “potbellies” or “beer guts”.

Conversely, estrogen tends to make one store more fat in their legs, arms, hips, and buttocks, mainly subcutaneous fat. This is why overweight women are more likely to have “thunder thighs”, “bingo wings” and cellulite, especially around their buttocks.

5
WildStarBerry•

I mean, some women definitely can get a completely flat or even concave stomach. I imagine there is a layer of fat to protect the uterus but I don't think it's enough to cause the pooch they're referring to since plenty of healthy women don't have it, I think it's mostly just genetic/fat distribution.

78
orangepeeling•

There’s a small bit of visceral fat inside the body/around the actual organ. Muscle is largely what protecting the uterus. The whole “women have a pooch because of their uterus!!” theory is just more pseudoscience “fat logic” that plagues social media, being shared as if it’s fact because it’s a more palatable notion than just admitting to themselves “Yeah I have a little bit of of a pooch on my belly because of my body fat %.”

People who tout this false “fact” seem to forget about the multitude of women who don’t have that little pooch; its straight up bad anatomy.

Edit: Although in the case of women who have had children, there can be a certain amount of loose skin and muscle separation that contributes to that “pooch” appearance. This isn’t due to the existence of a uterus though, but rather a byproduct of the use of a uterus for growin’ a baby

69
WildStarBerry•

I don't think women have a pooch to protect their uterus, I do think there's a small layer of fat there to do that but not enough to create the pooch others refer to since not all women of a healthy weight have it (also some healthy weight men have a pooch too). I know some women use it as fatlogic but a lot of women genuinely cannot or can barely healthily get a completely flat stomach because of their fat distribution. Life's not fair and genetics can be a bitch, but if a pooch is the worst card one is dealt they're doing pretty well.

24
orangepeeling•

Men and women with the pooch despite being skinny are the perfect example of the “skinny fat” body type that so many people this generation have, it’s not so much genetics as it is low muscle tone in conjunction with a higher bodyfat% despite appearing otherwise “thin.” Dat sedentary lifestyle, yo.

At what bf% does it go away, though? I know with a low enough bf% it will, but you seem to be implying that it only exists with unhealthy bf%, which I'd need a source to believe.

TIL that women are beekeepers. Also, you are not a real woman if you have a flat stomach. Also, you are not a real woman if you aren’t a beekeeper. And this must be why people say “honey”.

If you're a woman with a flat stomach it means your bees have travelled elsewhere in your body. We call this endobeetrimosis
