blade isn’t only for hexblade though the only reason it’s associated with hexblade is because hexblade gets charisma for weapon attacks and places itself way ahead of every other option

I thought that decision might be a little controversial. It's possible there are people who really like being a Fiend or GOO PotB, but mechanically it's a sub-optimal choice that would have thought most people wouldn't miss.

I’d go the other way with that thinking. I hate hexblade because it was used as a bandaid to fix the underpowered pact of the blade. I wish I could run ANY pact boon with ANY patron and not be punished mechanically.

I’m with you on this, I do feel that Cha to attack/damage is too much though. Giving medium armor prof should help a lot. If you want to play a Gish class, then your stats should reflect that, imo.

Pact of the Blade existed before Hexblade did, and it wasn’t exactly ignored. Why aren’t they class features, anyways?

So...effectively, only the Hexblade gets a pact boon, and all the other warlock subclasses have to give up an invocation slot to get one? Why? Doesn't this make the Hexblade more overbearing than it already is?

Hexblade get's PotB, which is a relatively weak pact (the ability to summon your weapon into your hand and make it disappear again is thematically cool, but mechanically, not that relevant). On the other hand, all of the other patrons get a Hex type feature. Given that, I think I made the different patrons a lot more on level footing.

Blade pact should be available to everyone, as well as a hexlike feature. Hexblade should focus on being a studier gish option than the other subclasses, with some more debuff like abilities. The other patrons choices should be viable with blade though more akin to a glass cannon. Fey offering mobility to dance around damage, Goo should mess with peoples heads, and Fiend should give you damage, while Celestial provides some heals/support. Also make sure not to exclude the Eldritch Archer option, pact weapon should be able to be a ranged weapon.

Messing with spellcasting is bound to fail, that said i find this version very odd. Your goal was to make it seem like the warlock didnt have only the same couple of spells he could cast, but the best way to do that would have been some variant of prepared casting. How you did it here means i choose 1 spell (not even every level) to add to my spells known according to the chart, and i start with only 1 spell.

You made the other pact boons invocations but didnt increase the amount of invocations you gain, actually reduced the amount you get early...

This is actually a worse warlock..
Edit: Also noticed how you can't upcast. This is true for normal warlocks too but at least all of their spells are always the max level. You pretty much have to select certain spells as your pact spell to get value.

A lot of revisions tend to allow other patrons as viable candidates for pact of the blade. Interesting to see that you went the other way with this.

Hey, I've applied an appropriate flair to this post for you, but in the future, please remember to apply an appropriate flair to your submissions.

If you are not sure how to flair, you have a number of options.

  1. Click the little "flair" button underneath your post, after it has been submitted. Then click on the flair you want, and hit "save".

  2. Include enough information in the title that our automod script can automatically apply the correct flair. Text such as "fighter archetype" or "adventure" in the title will apply the "Subclass" or "Adventure" flair, respectively. Be wary when using this method to make sure it is applying correctly.

  3. Leave a comment on your post consisting of nothing but the flair you want, in square brackets. For example, if you had commented [Spell], this would have been automatically flaired "Spell".

I've seen a couple of other warlock revisions on here, but I don't feel like they really address the issues where Warlocks need improvement. I wanted to make the minimalist changes necessary to make the warlock feel like a fun spellcaster to play (rather than a EB gunner) while maintaining the core feel of the class.

Any feedback appreciated.

Is the intent for the Pact Spell to be castable an unlimited about of times?

bricksesOP•

Yes, it was an intentional decision to make pact spells refresh after one minute rest rather than a short rest. I can't think of any spells on the warlock list that would be too powerful to be cast that often, but I might be wrong about that. Like I said, I'm looking for feedback.
