31 Days of Vince Russo "Special Matches" in 1999/2000 WCW - #10: "Prisoner of War" Table Match (Lance Storm vs. Sgt. A-Wall) on the 8-28-2000 episode of Nitro
The 10th entry of this 31-day series features Lance Storm vs. Sgt. A-Wall in a "Prisoner of War" Table Match from the August 28th, 2000 episode of Nitro.
Here is a link to the Prisoner of War Table Match. A clip of the match is also available on the WWE Network here, starting at the 31:48 mark.
On the August 28th, 2000 episode of WCW Monday Nitro, Lance Storm (the leader of Team Canada) faces off against General Rection (leader of the Misfits in Action) in a "Prisoner of War" Table Match.
The rules of this match are as follows: This is a table match, so the first wrestler to put their opponent through a table wins the match. After that, the "winner gets to take one of the loser's team members prisoner."
The members of Team Canada at this time are Lance Storm (WCW US Champ), Elix Skipper (WCW Cruiserweight Champ), and Carl Oulette (still mentioned as a member during this match, but was not at ringside tonight). The members of the MIA are General Rection, Lt. Loco (Chavo Guerrero), Corp. Cajun (Lash LeRoux), Sgt A-Wall (The Wall), and Major Gunns.
Before I get into the match itself, here’s some brief context:
On the August 14th edition of Nitro, Lance Storm forms Team Canada with Elix Skipper and Carl Ouellet. Two days later on Thunder, Team Canada defeats the Misfits in Action in a 6-man tag team match. Lance Storm, General Rection, and their respective factions continue their feud between then and this match.
Now, onto the match itself.
Lance Storm and Elix Skipper walk down to the ring. Storm has a microphone, and Skipper is waving a large Canadian flag. In the ring, Storm issues a challenge for the MIA. Storm says the MIA likes to play war, so Storm challenges them to a "Prisoner of War" Match. Storm says "the winner gets to take one of the loser's team members prisoner."
MIA (Gen. Rection, Lt. Loco with a supersoaker, Corp. Cajun, and Major Gunns) come down to the ring. Lash LeRoux waves a large American flag. Gen. Rection says the MIA might as well stand for "Made in America". He adds this match will be a table match with A-Wall. Sgt. A-Wall then comes down the ring carrying a table.
A-Wall leaves the table at ringside and enters the ring. A-Wall and Storm fight as the ball rings. A "USA" chant breaks out as the two wrestlers take the fight outside the ring. A-Wall goes for a chokeslam toward the table at the thirty second mark, but Storm fights his way out of the move. A-Wall hits a big boot onto Storm, and then throws Storm back inside the ring.
A-Wall climbs on the ring apron, but Storm catches him and positions him for a suplex. A-Wall lifts Storm off his feet for a possible suplex onto the table at ringside, but Elix Skipper hits A-Wall's back with the Canadian flag. A-Wall is stunned. Storm gets to the second turnbuckle and kicks A-Wall in the head. A-Wall falls downward through the table, giving Storm the victory.
Lance Storm wins this grueling "Prisoner of War" Table Match...in one minute and eight seconds.
Six seconds later, as the members of MIA are tending to A-Wall, Lance Storm grabs Major Gunns' arm and drags her up the entrance ramp and through the entrance. Tony Schiavone is screaming that Lance Storm has taken Major Gunns prisoner, and he immediately cuts to Pamela Paulshock for a backstage interview with Sting.
The entire time from the moment the match started to when Tony Schiavone cut to a backstage interview was 1 minute, 22 seconds. I don't think this situation was mentioned again on this show.
I have no words.
