You can set systems to 'restricted' to make your patrols follow a specific route. Then, you can unrestrict the system and the patrol will still follow your route!
This was a completely game-changing discovery for me. This just cut the number of patrols I needed down to a fifth of what it was.
-
Set systems you don't want them to go through to 'restricted'. You do this by going to the system and clicking the button on the bottom left of the screen (by the system's name).
-
Let a day pass.
-
Tell your fleets to patrol.
-
Unrestrict the system, if you wish. This might not last forever, but as far as I can tell they won't recalculate their route if you don't tell them to.

Omg I didn’t know you can have fleets patrol!!
Well, uh, that wasn't the tip I was trying to share but I'm glad I could help. It's at the top of the box that pops up when you select a fleet. Usually just a couple corvettes is good enough, and just give them the most basic modules (no weapons or defenses, maybe advanced thrusters if it's a long route)
Is it better to have a bunch of small, short patrols or longer but bigger fleet patrols? I was moving 600+ trade value and pirates kept being a nuisance
Not sure but one thing to remember is that smaller ships like corvettes are better at any piracy than battleships
It depends on the piracy. A fleet has a given “patrol value” based on the ships. An advanced corvette squadron is much better than a basic, bare-bones one. A bigger fleet reduces it more than a small one. The tool tips will tell you how much the fleet you have selected will reduce piracy. If you have a fleet with 600+ value you probably need a 20 corvette fleet moving through it every six months.
A corvette without any modules at all and tier 1 tech has 10 suppression, and a corvette sporting Fallen Empire tech and weapons that costs 3x as much to produce and upkeep also has 10 suppression.
The current anti-piracy meta is to make groups of barebones corvettes and have them patrol problem systems.
