I think I just got fired? I’m not sure. Feeling strange at work right now.

Background information: been working at a bar for about 7 months. There has been a lot of management changes. They’ve been difficult mostly because I had a good relationship with the first manager, and a shit one with the rest after she left. I’ve been working without a contract this whole time, despite asking many times if I could get one so we could agree on which hours and so forth.

I need stability. I need to know what shifts I have in advance and if I’m off that means I’m off and you can’t expect me to show up just because you call and “no one else can take the shift”, like, that’s not MY problem.

The list of problems is very long and I could keep going.

Bottom line is, I showed up to work today (my original shift was 9:30-15:30), now because one of my colleagues decided she could no longer take the shift from 15:30 to 18:00, the manager wanted me to work longer. She asked me friday, I told her I’d get back to her only to see that she changed it in the schedule yesterday without me having confirmed. I wrote back to her that I was not gonna work till 18:30 since I never agreed to that.

I got to work, she called and I answered the phone. Had to listen to a fucking shitstorm about how immature I am, how unprofessional I am, she accused me of not showing up to work 4 times, which I told her was definitely not true, don’t know where she got it from and I always show up on time too. Anyways she called me a lot of things, repeated the shitstorm more than 4 times (was a really long phone call). I couldn’t pay attention to her in the end, I think she was being unproffesional attacking me like that. She told me she’d like it if I didn’t work anymore to which I replied that I agreed (I’ve been working up the courage to quit for over a month now). However she pressured me to say I’d stay till 17:00, then started talking about how this shouldn’t happen again and then back to how she doesn’t like me and bla bla bla...

I need to get this off my chest. I’m standing at work right now and I think I’m feeling bad but I don’t know ‘cause I might be masking for the customers. I feel fine I think, but I also have this weird feeling in my chest. I feel really alone right now. This turned into kind of a rant, sorry.

Fuck her. If you can afford to quit do it otherwise save a lil and look for something else then walkout if you get a new job without needing this reference.

CakeDiceOP•

I can afford to quit luckily! Don’t know if I actually got fired though. I also start some classes again friday so the timing is good. I don’t know if I should contact my union though? They’ve been treating me like a garbage disposal and I’ve basically had no rights because of the contract situation.

The things she was calling me were just so unreasonable. She was claiming I was unproffesional while slinging out personal attacks left and right. I kinda feel like just going home and not actually staying till 17:00. It would be childish yes, but she already called me that at least 3 times for not wanting to prolong my shift only 2 days before, and I don’t really have anything to lose..

I also believe in professional courtesy, "two-weeks notice," and all that jazz, but two things - first, this lady is insane, and anybody who treats people with such disrespect isn't deserving of "professional courtesy" anyway. Show up for your shift long enough to throw an apron or something in her face and walk, lol. Second, you're in the service industry and nobody cares if you quit at the drop of a hat - it's almost the expectation, honestly. I spent weeks agonizing over how to quit a deli job I had six years ago, and realized that ultimately it just... didn't matter, lol. I threw an apron in my insane manager's face and told her "Good luck."

I spoke with some acquaintance/coworkers a few days afterward and they had hired someone for my shift within a day. You're insane manager will find someone new to torture, so don't worry too much.

CakeDiceOP•

This is comforting to read. I am also pretty sure she’s the crazy one but I generally have a lot of self doubt, so sometimes it’s hard figuring out who’s in the right/wrong.

I definitely like this advice though. I won’t see her though since it’s a one man shift. The chef said something about her coming in when I leave though so maybe I’ll have the chance. If she comes in I kinda want to say something along the lines of “you talk about the importance of being professional, but not even my mother has talked to me the way you have. I’m out.”. But I don’t know, maybe it’s best not to say anything and just walk out without too many words.

sponge_cat•

"There isn't any amount of money that would justify tolerating your insults and grossly unprofessional behavior. Best of luck moving forward, I will be working elsewhere." You could also just say "Thank you for the opportunity, but I quit" and hang up.

Nothing you say is going to make her "learn a lesson" - people like this convince themselves that the whole world is always against them, anyway.

Once you quit, it will be amazing to you how quickly she will go from a tremendous "authority figure" and source of stress to just another, sad, ranting, angry person desperate for control.

She is crazy. 100%.

u/CakeDice, I actually am in a very similar situation. I work at a small business and the owners are constantly changing the schedule around. I'm one of the only people there with an agreed-upon, set schedule, but they'll sometimes change my shifts around last minute and not tell me.

They are 100% in the wrong. I am lucky - I used my autism and hyperfocusing powers to become THE PAPERWORK GIRL, and now no one else knows how to do my job as well as me (whenever I am gone on vacation and get back it's like the store catches on fire the moment I leave). So I'm not replaceable (yet).

I just come in for my pre-agreed-upon hours. If they actually communicate the schedule change I'll try to be flexible, but otherwise, you scheduled me on my day off a day before without telling me? Welp, I'll have a nice day off.

Point is, do not cave, do not doubt yourself. Eventually her boss is going to see how she treats her employees, but before that, stand up for yourself! Tell her to her face how unprofessional she was! Even when you put this job on resumes for other places there's pretty much no chance they'll actually call for a reference lol.

deadhead94•

"two-weeks notice,"

In 2 weeks you're going to notice i haven't been here in 2 weeks.

that should count.

if you're in an at will employment state, tell her to get bent and walk out.

3
zecchinoroni•

if you're in an at will employment state, tell her to get bent and walk out.

They're not in the US.

2

Definitely contact your union. She can't get away with speaking to you like that or not giving you a contract. The irony in her accusations, to say you're immature and unprofessional, is just next level...

Edit: she also can't be allowed to treat any other future employees like that.

9
CakeDiceOP•

I completely agree. Been asking about my contract weekly since november but it just never seems to happen. I think I have two more colleagues in this situation but they don't seem to mind anymore. They just gave up and accepted it because they need the job.

1
CaptainHunt•

She was totally out of line. If you have a union, tell your shop steward. They definitely can and will file a grievance. If nothing else, she is violating union rules by disciplining you like that without a steward present. If not, find a lawyer and sue her.

2
peakedattwentytwo•

Personal attacks are also unprofessional.

3
MicroDigitalAwaker•

If you have a Union 100% contact them, this is why workers have unions, also your manager should go get fucked

2
Dreshna•

Meh. I think you are over thinking it. Had a manager ask me to work mid and close instead of just mid shift. Offered to give me a break and pay for my food. I was waiting on the food and another manager came out screaming at me for putting in a staff food order, calling me names. I said fuck it and left. Manager who originally asked me to stay called and asked if there was anything she could do to get me to come back. Said sorry and no thanks Never went back and no regrets. Life is too short and you should value yourself enough that you won't accept being treated like that.

Another time had a manager come up to me and ask to work a double after the morning shift after already working doubles all week. I told him no and he said "If you don't stay and work I'll make sure you regret it.". I said "No I won't.". Left and never regretted it.

2
amaezingjew•

It doesn’t sound like you got fired based off of her saying “this shouldn’t happen again”. That means that in the future, going forward, she doesn’t expect you to “be so immature” again.

1
ethanjcarlson98•

You definitely should, man. I worked at Kroger for 2 years in high school, and I didn’t want to go anywhere because I was used to it and could do it well. It provided stability. But once I turned 18 I started getting midnight shifts and 4am shifts on weekends while I was in my senior year of high school, and my manager would change my schedule on the board during my off days. He’d always be upset when I didn’t show, because the only way for me to know that my schedule had changed would be to go to work on my off-day and check the schedule. He wouldn’t even let me go to my grandpas funeral - said it probably wouldn’t work - so I went and asked the goddamn store manager. Quitting was the best thing that ever happened and I loved my next several jobs. I hope you get out of that fast and find something you love :)

1
CakeDiceOP•

This sounds similar to my situation, except I'm over 18 and it was once the new manager came along that I started getting the messed up shifts as well. I had an agreement with the previous manager where I wouldn't get the late night shifts either and it was all very structured and I worked the same days each week more or less. But yeah, not anymore.
Me too and same for you! :) I'm starting some classes soon before applying to uni so it's looking brighter.

2
IntrepidDust•

Fuck

What's that?

1
cheesypoofs5000•

I'd say walk out. Fuck her. She needs to have consequences for talking to people like that. Kick customers out and lock up if you're the only person there.

I normally wouldn't give that advice, but if she keeps getting away with it AND you cover the other shift, her bosses will never see a problem with her. Call someone higher than her and tell them. What happened and why you're walking out, if you must. Just realize they will try to get you to stay for that shift for their own convenience.

27
unlikemike123•

This, this, a million times this.

Managers of bars get such a huge ego because of the state of the business. Employee are "expendable" and so they think they can treat them how they like because 90% of them will do anything they're told.

Make it known that she cursed you out over the phone because you didn't come in to cover a shift THAT WASN'T EVEN CONFIRMED, then she has the fucking nerve to say that you're unprofessional?

In my opinion she can suck a fat dick on a personal level, and on a professional she needs to be called out on that behaviour.

15
cheesypoofs5000•

A very fat dick, indeed.

1
CakeDiceOP•

I agree so much. This is exactly what I thought and exactly what I was saying to her, but she wasn't even listening and definitely not understanding any of what I said.

1
unlikemike123•

No at that point she would been in the "I'm right dispite all else because I don't like you" stance, what a petty beeeitch

1
CakeDiceOP•

I think I'm actually gonna go with this. I wouldn't say the owner/my boss is much better though, considering he's the one I've been trying to get the contract from and he keeps pushing it away. I'm still going to let him know about this though. And quit.

2
cheesypoofs5000•

Glad I could help. Telling him is more about your reputation/peace of mind anyway, since they probably wouldn't keep hiring shitty managers if they cared about their employees. At least you can say you need tried.

3
Antangil•

Yeah this one is cut and dried. Boss is not a good person to work for, my bet is that your co-workers are calling out instead of coming in because they’re looking for new work. Find a new job pronto.

Where’d your first manager go? Could they give you a positive recommendation or help you find a job wherever they landed?

10
CakeDiceOP•

That could be. I can imagine some of my colleagues being frustrated with the lack of structure as well. Rules keep changing, opening hours keep changing, everything else keeps changing too.

She went to make movies in a different part of the country. I probably could, but she does know my boss from way back and she hasn't been there at all while any of this has been going on. Unfortunately she also left from one day to another. A lot of us had written to her just about general stuff and she wasn't responding. Then we were told she left.

1
petaline555•

I had to leave a job because they didn't understand that I needed to be scheduled in advance and wasn't available last minute. The manager changed the schedule without okaying with me etc. But what really makes me angry on your behalf is the verbal abuse. There is no excuse for that. I feel that you are justified in walking out now, but I understand why you wouldn't want to. I wouldn't be able to just leave in the middle of a shift unless I was told to in no uncertain terms to go.

Tell HR or the bosses boss about the verbal abuse if you want to, but you don't owe them anything. Never do any favors for the abuser. Find a better job ASAP.

My interpretation of what happened is this. The boss got frustrated. The boss has been socialized to believe verbally abusing people is okay. She took out her frustration on you, and now expects you to to feel bad and scared for your job, causing you to bend over backwards for her to avoid future verbal abuse. This technique is probably how her parents disciplined her as a child. The only thing you can do is not play her game. There is no way to win with people who are so broken.

8
CakeDiceOP•

I ended up staying 'cause I felt bad for leaving the chef with everything and same with the customers who already paid for their things. I considered it but I couldn't really get myself to do it.

We don't have HR. The manager functions as HR at this bar since it's just a privately owned business. It's quite problematic.

I hated how I could tell she wanted me to be scared. That pissed me off. I'm technically still hired at my other job, I was just taking a break due to studies, so I have an agreement that I can just call back and get shifts. So finding a job is no issue for me at all. But I really hated how she tried to threaten me and how she started calling me all these things. I even told her that it wasn't okay, but that obviously doesn't work. I just like the idea that she's stuck at that place while I have no problem leaving. But the whole thing was still very uncomfortable. I got back home not long ago and I still feel very uneasy and a bit on edge.

2
idfk_idfk•

This is bad management, me friend. Rest easy knowing you weren't the cause of the problem, and enjoy your next job, wherever that may be!

6
ynocfyinco•

She's an abusive person. If the bar has an owner, tell them what happened and why you're leaving.

Make sure you clock out so you can collect your last paycheck.

4
LadyJohanna•

Terrible manager. Communication is key, and you should have your schedule in advance so you can plan. Last-minute changes should only be made with mutual agreement, and only if it suits the people involved.

It's not fair of her to pretend like she's firing you and then relenting later on. That's unprofessional.

Do you have an HR department? Or are you ok with quitting and looking for something else? If you need a stable routine, then maybe restaurant work isn't for you, because things in that profession are very fluid and change constantly.

At this point, if you don't really need that job, consider putting in your 2 weeks notice so you can focus on school. Then reevaluate what kind of work environment would help you perform your best without undue stress, so that you can focus on your actual job without all the extra bullshit.

4
CakeDiceOP•

Exactly, I was very confused by her telling me I should look for another job and then later threatening me with the same thing. I told her "I will no longer take any more shifts" and somehow it seems as if she didn't understand? I'm still very confused.

They never gave me a contract so I don't actually need to give any notice. I can just not show up, luckily.

The manager also functions as HR and we only have one.

3
laziestofalltoads•

Everyone deserves respect. Personal insults are never ok, especially in a work setting. (I’m old AF, so learned from experience ;-)

2
axis_of_elvis•

i got shit working in a kitchen once, used to cycle home for lunch, one day shit got too much and i just rode right past leaving them with the world supply of dishes that i was going to get on after lunch.

2
I-ate-your-pony•

That doesn't sound like good leadership at all. For your own sanity, I would recommend you to seek for another job.

Add: If your employer keeps treating you like that for no good reasons, it will most likely get worse over time.

2

She sounds extremely abusive. If other people call off, that is not your problem unless you are the schedule as on call. Having a different schedule every week is not unusual for the bar and restaurant industry, but solid businesses don't do that and good employees don't stay where they are not respected. I would actually inform the owner or general/regional manager (whoever is above this manager) and let them know how she is treating employees.

It is pretty common in the service industry to stay over to cover other employees or get called in on a day off. If you do this you will be seen as reliable, get the good shifts, etc. Assuming you have a decent manager, of course. You will also be treated like a doormat by a bad manager. In lots of workplaces, there is this unspoken expectation that if you are a good employee, you will go beyond the bare minimum. In some places this is worth it and will make your career. In others, you will be be taken advantage of. Personally, I wouldn't go out of my way for someone like your current manager.

2
CakeDiceOP•

I went out of my way the first few months, but then they started abusing it.. Now I'm getting punished for not taking certain shifts, while others probably don't even get asked.

It's a private business though so the manager is basically HR. It's really bad.

1
Obscurian•

Ooof, yeah that's a firing if I've ever heard one. Listen, do yourself this favor: leave this behind you and look elsewhere for employment.

Just in case, write in a letter of resignation, then confront your boss and ask this one simple question: have I been fired? If they say yes, OK. If they say no, give them the letter of resignation. In any case, you deserve better than to work with no contract. Also, NEVER work without a contract!

2

She didn't fire you - she shared her preference likely because she's too much of a coward for the confrontation of saying 'you're fired.' You called her out on it with your response (whether it was intentional is irrelevant). She caved. If anything, I'd guess that you're more secure in your position than before - until she can find a replacement.

2
CakeDiceOP•

I have a replacement. A replacement job. I never left my old job, I just agreed with my boss that I'd get back to her when I wanted to get some shifts again. It's a way better job, stable hours, stable pay, paid lunchbreaks (didn't even have breaks at this one and had to pay for lunch). I honestly don't know why I took a break from that and started working at this bar. I guess it was fun at first but holy hell.

1
Jimjongjung•

Life pro tip, when other people are calling you immature or unproffesional they're often the ones that are the problem. Definitely in this case.

Whether you still have a job or not, I'd start looking for another one asap.

Id walk the fuck out.

When i was 19 i was a waiter at a restaurant. I was supposed to work till 8:30 pm. One lady left early without doing her sidework. At about 8:15pm i was sat a party of 8. I said, uhhh, im supposed to leave in 15. The manager didnt care. So i said ok but thats my last table of the night. At about 9:30 i put the bill on the table and finished my sidework. As i go to clock out my managers comes up and says "Hey, go do so and so's sidework. She forgot to do it." I said, "I cant. My sidework is done and its an hour after i was supposed to be out of here anyways, im waiting for my last tip and then leaving." She says, "Im not asking." I said, "Yeah i can tell." I saw my table cash out, grabbed my tip and headed for the door. The manager steps in front of me and asks where i THINK im going. I said im going home. She tells me shes going to write me up for not doing my sidework. I said i did MY sidework but im not doing someone elses. I already stayed late and im leaving right now. She says shes still gonna write me up so i said "Dont bother." I take my apron off and throw it on the ground. I said "Fuck you" and walked out. I called corporate and told them what happened. They said theyd deal with her and that i coupd return the work but id be written up for insubordination. I declined and found another job in less than 2 weeks. A few months later i heard that the manager was fired because she had been stealing BOXES of toys from the store (that were promotional to give to kids when they bought certain meals) for her children. She then told customers that they werent a participating store when they asked about the toys.

People are fucking insane.

Tldr: walk out of your shitty job. Youll find another one.

2
mrninjaguy•

See, this sort of thing is why I started my own business. Yes, it’s difficult and yes, I’m going to experience customers who will drag me through hell and back, but honestly, I’ve been able to handle those situations better than what you’ve experienced. I have a lot of control and flexibility with how I do things and, while I’m not making enough to move out of my parent’s place (yet), I’m quickly getting there.

I’m not suggesting that you should start your business. What I am suggesting is for you to get out of that place as soon as you can. I don’t know how tolerant you are until you get a meltdown/shutdown, but the last thing you want to do is to do so in front of the customers (like what happened to me when I used to work at Staples).

2
