What if we allowed an optional 4-1-1/3-2-1/3-1-2 role queue to offset the high dps queue times?

General

Let's face it. As good as role queue was for the game, dps queue times have skyrocketed. Even in diamond, you can have a 10 min wait time for a comp game that might take around 10 mins itself.

What if we also had an opt in 4-1-1/3-2-1/3-1-2 roll lock (the matchmaker decides the number of roles at the start of the game, just continue to queue as dps/tank/support after checking the opt in)? Granted, not a very clean solution, but one that does address the higher demand for dps heroes.

The fact that it's opt in means that you could still focus on 2-2-2 should you want a consistent grind through ladder ranks. This simply gives an alternative to those that want to avoid a high queue time.

And before people say that 4-1-1 is a terrible experience for supports/tanks, remember that we have had fun comps before the role lock that didn't focus on 2-2-2. The only difference is that now both teams are mirrored into the same number of roles. So this time you wouldn't have to worry about a 4-1-1 comp team that would never switch against a 3-3 dominant GOATS comp

Edit: Just to make it clear, I agree this isn't a particularly clean solution, but it would be both optional and a helpful boost to queue times. As of yet I have yet to see another suggestion which is why I decided to propose one.

And for those of you who don't think queue times are bad, this is basically what Overwatch has become in lower tiers. IMO something should be done

Edit 2: I should clarify:

- This is an Opt-in suggestion. If tanks/supports don't want to do it, they don't have to

- 2-2-2 can't be opted out of

- This suggestion adds options to the role queue. This doesn't split the player base. Best case scenario: queue times decrease. Worst case scenario: queue times stay the same

I have a feeling a DPS who opts into 4-1-1 will wait even longer, since I doubt any tank/support will want to opt into 4-1-1.

I mean, I would consider queuing for 4-1-1 but I'm instalocking ball and will hear nothing else

Reported lol

If no tanks/supports opt in to any of the other queues, then things stay the same as they are now (the matchmaker will end up queueing the dps for 2-2-2). So given that the worst case scenario is that things stay the same, I think it's worth a try

tigerisnormal#BRINGTHEMAYHEM — Dallas Fuel | Philadelphia Fusion•

if no tanks/supports opt in it's a waste of dev time

9
InkeyisOP•

That's ABSOLUTE worst case scenario. I doubt we would reach it

-1
tigerisnormal#BRINGTHEMAYHEM — Dallas Fuel | Philadelphia Fusion•

what tank or support would opt into a 4 dps game when their queue times are perfectly fine in 2-2-2 except hammond lockers?

12
johnfoley9001•

the worst case is not things staying the same. they are saying its gonna be worse and you can't even wrap your head around it.

InkeyisOP•

Someone needs to properly explain why. Adding options that are not exclusive with one another does not increase queue times

-1
snaerixxTeam Gigantti | Reinhardt•

You're suggesting we split queues further? Wouldn't that lead to longer queue times?

38
InkeyisOP•

This doesn't split the queue, it provides more options to people in the queue that don't want to wait for ONLY 2-2-2. It reduces queue times at best and keeps it the same at worst

-15
snaerixxTeam Gigantti | Reinhardt•

Yeah I dunno dude. If there's a way, this probably isn't it. Points for trying though

9
InkeyisOP•

Maybe it isn't but Imma at least offer a suggestion. Thx for not jumping at my throat like others

1
snaerixxTeam Gigantti | Reinhardt•

Yeah I can't really criticize you because I for sure can't come up with a better idea. I wonder what the devs will do to fix this issue aside from adding more heroes from non-DPS roles... I expect some damage heroes might be reworked to fit other roles, such as Mei and Bastion into off-tanks

1
johnfoley9001•

the future of the game is 2-2-2. the game will be balanced for this. this is overwatch. any real thought you waste on this process needs to have harder premises to be meaningful.

budgetorisa•

Not fun for a lone support / tank getting gang flanked by 3 dps all the game

Better que times are not worth if tanks and supports have miserable games

16
InkeyisOP•

supports/tanks don't have to opt in if they don't want to. Although I do know of supports/tanks that would like a change of pace from strict 2-2-2. The only problem before was that:

1- People that didn't play dps, instalocked dps

2- They were forced to play into 3-3 goats or into 2-2-2 without people swapping. The restrictions put into place would prevent this

-3
throwawayrepost13579New York Excelsior•

Do you really know supports/tanks that would like to solo tank/heal 4 flanking DPS?

9
InkeyisOP•

When it works, it's fun. The game becomes less about choke points and more mobility focused. It's a different play style. It doesn't have to be played the same way 2-2-2 is

-7
Patch3yVancouver Titans | Los Angeles Gladiators•

It's fun for you maybe. Playing tank for 4 dps is dog shit.

6
throwawayrepost13579New York Excelsior•

Then I'd rather play 6 DPS or just Quickplay Classic.

WaraurochsUnited States | Dallas Fuel•

Never wanting to solo tank with a solo Zen healer was one of the biggest reasons I wanted 2-2-2 lock.

13
InkeyisOP•

Don't opt in then

That’d lead to a lot of trouble. You would eventually need to balance heroes, and how do you do that when there’s a billion different metas going on because there are multiple queues.

9
InkeyisOP•

That's how balancing was done before the role lock tho...

Baptiste was balanced and created with goats (3-3), dive/deathball (2-2-2), and dps heavy comps (4-1-1/3-2-1/3-1-2) in mind

edit: wording

When? Her recent nerfs and reworks all happened because of GOATS and the end of it.

6
InkeyisOP•

I misspoke on my comment, that's on me. I meant to use baptiste as an example, but instead I used brig and I also worded the comment poorly

Basically I was giving an example of how they used to properly balance with multiple comps in mind. So they obviously CAN balance with multiple comps in mind should they want to

1
orangekingo•

This will just inflate queue times further, as the matchmaker gets more complicated and specific.

If people are frustrated with long DPS queue times they should play tank or support. If you want to specifically play DPS, you trade a long queue time for a guarantee that you can play your role in a balanced team comp. This system isn't without it's flaws but it is miles beyond what we had.

This won't be an issue if we get to play arcade while queued.

9
InkeyisOP•

This adds options, not reduces them. Queue times decrease at best and stay the same at worst

-2
orangekingo•

More options in the matchmaker queue creates longer queue times as it splits the queuing playerbase up.

Everyone in the community queuing for 2/2/2 = X time in matchmaker.

Half of the community queuing for 2/2/2, half the community queuing for 4/1/1 = longer queues for both, as less players are queued for each category.

presumably, the more categories you add, the longer each queue gets as it has less players to pull from.

does this make sense?

2
InkeyisOP•

I added in the edit that you can't opt out off 2/2/2 as this is the perceived core of the game

Vladimir_Pooptin↭PMA↭ — RunAway•

Part of me is happy to see all these salty DPS mains. Not sure what to tell you because you can't go back to 4 DPS NGAFing, change it up or find something else to do in the meantime.

7
GeraltForOverwatch•

The matchmaker would decide if you run 4-1-1, 3-2-1, etc? That's non-sense.

6
InkeyisOP•

You would have to opt in for each individual role lock, so it wouldn't put you into something you didn't agree to. From there, the matchmaker would put you in to whichever best helps matchmaking. It's not a clean solution, but it would help

-2
GeraltForOverwatch•

So it's worse because one can queue for tank and/or support, be dropped in a 4-1-1 hell game, and you know thats gonna happen a lot because of DPS queue times.

Sounds like a big part of why we needed role queue in the first place.

2
InkeyisOP•

You would have to opt in/agree to 4-1-1 games for the matchmaker to place you in 4-1-1 games. Should it happen more than you like, you just opt out.

The opt in/ opt out system is what gives you the flexibility to decide

0
GeraltForOverwatch•

Okay, I see, my misinterpretation.

Still, queue times are gonna skyrocket because I have yet to meet who would volunteer to be a '1' part in anything in Overwatch.

2
gmarkerbo•

Add a 6 DPS queue in ranked, that will take a lot of DPS players off the main queue and fill games much faster.

4
gmarkerbo•

4-1-1 ? 4 dps focusing one tank who has only one healer to back him up? Or 4 dps focusing one healer who will get zero healing from anyone else except soldier? I could maybe see it working with Orisa Ana/Moira but that's about it. 4 dps can do a lot of damage to a shield, especially with no dva to eat dmg. Wrecking ball is the only playable tank here.

3-1-2 is probably the best choice but it'd lock Orisa as the tank.

3
InkeyisOP•

4 different metas would adapt to each one. All 4 role queues don't have to be played like 2-2-2

1
retardo•

Why would I as a support or tank queue for 4-1-1? First, that sounds like volunteering to have a frustrating experience, and second, the potentially long DPS queues don't affect me so there would be no incentive to do it.

3
Ultimate_AceDallas Fuel | Seoul Dynasty•

This is strictly worse than dps players in long queues.

2
GenWalrusVancouver Titans | New York Excelsior•

If I’m a tank or support why would I ever volunteer to go into a queue where I’m GUARANTEED to solo heal/tank..? Unless you’re saying it’s a separate queue for dps but if I lock tank I may just end up in this 4-1-1 team. In which case just get rid of role lock all together that’s all we got before anyway.

Edit: didn’t notice your edit ignore second part of comment.

2
SwanJumperPMA — New York Excelsior | Tracer•

That would lead to longer queue times across the board

1
theodorerobertsI am tired. — Mercy•

So Quick Play Classic in Arcade? We have that as I remember.

And why would a Tank and Support main want to queue 411 anyway? Tanks and Supports always get like 20 second queue time in 222 and it's way better than 411, they don't have any reason to queue for 411 in the first place.

1
grapedogBoston Uprising — •

i don't think a lot of DPS realize how shitty it is being a solo tank or solo healer. I think it's just not something they can comprehend. Why wouldn't you want to solo tank or solo heal? I don't know... because it fucking sucks. My best friend is a tank main and he is LOVING the new role queue and 2-2-2 lock, because now he knows he will ALWAYS have 2 healers and 1 additional tank.

1
socialfaller•

Don't realize or don't care?

1
grapedogBoston Uprising — •

the end result is the same, just sucks being a solo tank or support.

1
socialfaller•

That it does. This is why I don't care about long dps queues.

1
floppelganger•

What if you increased team sizes to 7 or 8 players total (2-3-2, 2-4-2), so that you can run more dps in comps but still refrain players from having to solo tank or solo heal?

1
UltimateAuraToronto Defiant | Rogue•

No one is going to opt in for this lmao. Solo healing or tanking is one of the more frustrating things to do.

1
digichu12•

I always thought that instead of quickplay classic they should have made a "whoops all dps mode" where you had 6 dps role lock all the time... or maybe a 5-1 with someone randomly selected to be the sucker who has to play support...

it would mirror most of our old quickplay experiences
