That’s the way the cookie crumbles.

With dry cool wit like that you could work for the city parks department.

Maybe u/SuchCauliflower is Phil Ginsberg.

Jeez, it was just a lame joke - there’s no need for name calling.

Good afternoon good evening and goodnight

I literally snorted at this. Great pun work. You are now a mid of r/dadjokes. Huge congratulations for the boys and I.

kirksan•

I doubt it blew over with that construction. I figured it was just made of ginger bread, but it looks like it’s a wooden frame with rebar sunk into the ground to hold it in place. Whoever did this put a ton of thought and work into it. If it was intentionally knocked over, whoever did that is a jerk.

Same foundation as Millennium Tower.

This always confused me. This was always such a big deal for a decent amount of time.... until the media stopped getting hits from it... then nothing.

Millennium Monolith.

I dunno.... what did those rebar go into? I don’t see a cement block buried in the ground that got ripped up. If those rebar were just driven into the ground I have an easy time seeing it getting blown over.

jredmondOPCastro•

That was my thinking too. I was up there yesterday afternoon, and the wind seemed a little stronger than normal (though that may have just been because of the rain). The monolith was wobbling a bit with every gust.

36
SmokeyBlazingwood16FOLSOM•

What about that storm last night?

21
gmz_88•

Yep, looks intentional. Some of our neighbors aren’t very nice people.

17
true_spokes•

Mononimbyism is ruining this city.

22
zerocnc•

I think you meant people.

3
salondesert•

RV guy warned people about the explosion, I guess that's a start.

1
andnowintroducing•

Doesn't look intentional to me. That's like 12" of rebar holding up something 6 to 8 times that. Definitely not built to code. You can trust me on that.

13
vaderaide•

i’m not sure about gingerbread monoliths but for a fence post, just as an example, you would put 1/3 of the post in the ground. so for an 8 foot high fence you would need a 12 foot pole. I mention this because i think maybe longer rebar would have helped.

11
andnowintroducing•

You're correct. This tower was not built to code.

7
mikewootini•

I was there last night in the rain and wind for 2 hours. It was pretty solid. Someone did it. You can see it was holding up fine. investigative video

RmmThrowAwayCivic Center•

The Rebar looks bent, which is a point towards it being pushed over. But heavy rain + heavy wind + dry soil could easily have had it fall over too.

4
Mahadragon•

Judging from the pic, (the sun rises in the east) the wind was blowing from the north (toward the south) which is exactly the direction the monolith blew over. So yes, the wind is definitely a possibility. SF winds are no joke. It gets extremely windy and that soil is dry, hard, and crumbly.

10
khalamar•

At least that kept that jerk away from Land's End Labyrinth.

4
StatusQuitPotrero Hill•

I don't think it's rebar, looking at the pic it looks like rope to me. And that hill can get very windy. And if it starts to lean I imagine it wouldn't take much to blow it over after that.

But ya never know... Unless you do.. then I guess you do know 😋

1
jredmondOPCastro•

I didn't get a very close look (I was trying to keep my dog close), but it wasn't rope - there was a steady wind as I was up there this morning, and rope would have been moving.

Sabotage!

This was a great christmas present. I hope people will take it on themselves for more SF-style comedy pranks like this.

Update: as of about 3pm the remains of the monolith are gone, but they've been replaced by a bigger crowd than I've ever seen up here.

Sweet, now it's just trash that the city will have to clean up. So whimsical!

6†

Na. Use the remains to build a gingerbread crematorium, with a tiny furnace to cook marshmallows in. Name the marmallows after bad local politicians. Make silent videos and upload them to youtube.

You guys really need to stay light on your feet if we're gonna make it past 2021

23
salondesert•

Giant marshmallow Chesa?

What did you DO, Ray?

I couldn't help it. It just popped into my head!

1
Chicken-n-Biscuits•

It already was?

7
brbposting•

Neighbors and city officials appeared to enjoy it.

Informed by KQED News about the new monolith, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg responded: “Wow. Even makes a Jewish parks director smile.”

Ginsburg said there were no immediate plans to remove the monolith, and it could stay, at least for the time being.

”Looks like a great spot to get baked,” Ginsburg quipped like a true Californian. “We will leave it up until the cookie crumbles.”

”We all deserve a little bit of magic right now,” he said.

u/bfarre11 hope your 2020 gets a little more magical in a different, less upsetting way

11
bfarre11•

Also true.

0†
venetianseahare•

Yeah and it's now edging over the clif overlooking a relatively popular trail. So it's potentially dangerous. Also whoever build it dug a hole in the crumbling rock in an area that is eroding fast. So while it was instagram cool, it did damage. I hope the artist is going to at least clean up now.

-1†
fellate-o-fishNob Hill•

Oh heavens no, the DPW people who get paid to spend half the day sitting in their trucks diddling their phones might have to do some actual work for a few minutes.

-6†
swolesister•

Why are you being so rude about DPW employees? They are just working class people who often have a pretty grubby job to do. If you'd like to go up there and haul this away yourself, nobody is stopping you. Also, wouldn't you rather they be less busy than overworked and always delayed? Otherwise things like this would take ages.

Sometimes the general jerkitude towards any arm of city government on here seems pretty irrational and more like an edgy affectation than any substantial gripe. Just chill man.

14
Talanaes•

I’ve definitely run across a few DPW folks who spend their shifts cleaning the park from inside the bar.

3
fellate-o-fishNob Hill•

Imagine being upset that someone whose taxes pay for city employees' salaries, benefits, and pensions might expect those employees to do a little less phone diddling in their trucks and a little more working.

0
andnowintroducing•

Several of the hardest working people I know work for DPW and Rec and Parks. With that said, who cares what you have to say? I'll leave you with some food for thought though: SF is chalk full of entitled assholes who can pick up their dog's shit, but then can't carry said bag of shit to a trash can.
