Some of the ones around my area are just a sign saying roadworks with no works happening

80kmh road, Roadworks ahead, Speed reduced to 40kmh, No actual works in sight

Sounds about right 😅

Yeah this is a problem and they need to sort this shit out. I can’t tell if it’s contractors gouging, overzealous unions or regulations, pure laziness, or all of the above (think I can guess which it is). But seriously, the economic cost alone warrants someone investigating and putting a stop to it.

Ergomann•

In SA they bought in a new law which fines the operators for leaving roadwork speed signs out if there’s no actual roadworks happening

Wildweasel666•

Really? Damn we need to get this done! Ima look into it

Those signs have cried wolf too many times, I see many drivers just maintain speed right the way through.

And I can't blame 'em.

3
glintglib•

Geez that shits me. Its not just Melbourne where that happens. If this map represents current road works - thats nuts.

2
ign1fyEast•

Some? It's all of them almost all of the time.

West gate tunnel entered the conversation

Theomegaphenomenon•

Yeah I dont think i driven a single day in my life without being stuck at one of these stupid roadworks. Welcome to Melbourne

28
celerym•

Beats having potholes everywhere

20
ign1fyEast•

I dunno... I can go faster around potholes than roadworks.

There's roads near me that are now slower since they have been paved, because VicRoads couldn't pave a road to be flatter than when it was dirt.

Also, I just zoomed in and it doesn't include the level crossing removal in Mooroolbark.

5
Theomegaphenomenon•

To be honest i prefer a non paved roads even a road thats never maintained then constant roadworks especially since i drive a 4bie, potholes and ruts become kinda fun

3
ign1fyEast•

I'm at the other end. A little 900kg hatch with a bit of JWRC heritage. Faster over dirt than speed humps.

4
Theomegaphenomenon•

They just replace potholes with speed jumps

5
wetrorave•

speed jumps

I am not sure if I should envy your suspension or pity it

5
rewbzz•

Better they get it over and done with now, otherwise you'd be sitting at level crossings every day for the rest of your life

Mostly true, I love what they have down on Werribee street, but the "Cherry Street" crossing removal has made a large number (1,000 houses at least) of people that I imagine have a slower trip into the Werribee main street AND it also has changed traffic patterns as drivers that once used Cottrell to drive down Watton westerly now driver down Watton easterly, so you have no parking spots for people driving easterly.

Most of the crossing removals I gave a "tick" too, but the Cherry St one has congested the Terniet Road exit and has made a 2 minute trip into a 10-15 minute trip for many residents to get to the supermarket.

I use the Cotrell St IGA so it doesn't affect me much, but I also have to go to the hospital 3 times a week for treatment and the traffic has meant afterwards when I want to go home and just crash and lay down I have an extra 10 minutes of waiting in the car, sick bag on lap, hoping for a good run with the lights...

What? I disagree with one of the replaced crossings and DO think it should be left there as traffic flowed much more smoothly prior... now the main street is a very long cul-de-sac and you can imagine what that does for traffic...

As I said, I give most of the replacements a tick, but this particular crossing used to go to the end of the main street and be the main egress. Now the crossing by passes the main street and goes to the princes highway, so no one uses it to get to the main st, putting extra pressure on the only one bridge that is practical access.

This crossing isn't like just they've built a bridge, they've majorly changed the road layout which has created undesirable traffic patterns.

So my approach to politics? A solution that doesn't work, actually makes things worse, should just be left there :-).

While I agree and it really annoying these roadworks are preparing the city for more migrants too.

Genuinely surprised there's still specks of white visible on the map. Driving in the west is a fucking nightmare and has been since before covid.

Convenientjellybean•

Anyone else notice all the yellow traffic trailers around melb, telling how many minutes to whatever street? Why are they there, never had them before lockdown.

monty1104•

Mate of mine works for vicroads. Apparently some sort of initiative of theirs. Can’t remember exactly what he told me, other than I remember rolling my eyes. Seems like a complete waste of money.

12
Convenientjellybean•

So many projects in Vic are job schemes to keep the economy flowing, which is not entirely bad.

Freeway roadworks are a joke. After it's all done, whoops we need another lane! Let's do it all again...

3
StandardAnomaly2000•

Why can't they just do the roadwork like really quickly and make them last longer or something?

9
Quitetheninja•

They do!... in Europe. Go to Switzerland if you want to see it done right

4
FlatEric80•

So they can come back in two years and fix them again. That's how wankers make money...

4
hellions123613•

Cause that would make sense

2
maybebabyg•

There's roadworks on both exits out of my street. One I understand, they're fixing a pretty janky bus stop and the pedestrian access to a crossing. The other one is fucking weird. They're removing and replacing the guttering along the whole road, but they've raised the gutter so on the finished sections the road floods every time it rains.

8
fizzy_me•

same thing happened to me, while i was at school two roadwork jobs started on the streets next to mine, couldn't get home without walking through roadworks

6
KillTheBroniesbosnia•

Maybe they're resurfacing the road afterwards?

6
Deevo77•

Glad we got that belt and roadworks money coming in.

7
deathbypapercuts•

Honestly, if it's actual maintenance, I'm glad it's happening (cause shitty roads suck) and awesome if jobs are being created cause of it. It could be worse right? Goodness knows Libs love to approve developments and never invest money into infrastructure or maintenance!

6
sir_cockington_III•

What an inept government, maintaining and improving roads.

At first I thought it was a poop map... like what they have of San Francisco.

I saw this 2 weeks ago and realised Melbourne just sucks now. Road works everywhere all the time.

Go to work in the morning: Traffic moves extra slow on the Monash Freeway due to road works.

Come home from work in the evening: Traffic moves extra slow due to the road works.

Drive at night after 9 PM: Monash freeway is now on the 40kmph limit, due to road works.

Drive in your local suburb: Suddenly the road is closed due to road works and you have to take a detour.

Drive in the city: I don't even want to start.

There is never a time you can get on the freeway without something slowing you down lol.
