[2601] Modern Gothic - Chapter One

Southern Gothic

Hey guys. This is a chapter for a novel in its infancy, more like a backup thing to keep the writing going while I'm stuck on the novel I am currently working on. It is written rather uniquely--first person PoV in present tense. I'm not sure this is my type of thing since I have no practice with it. But it was a nice experiment.

The story itself is about a young man who leaves NYC to a small town in Louisiana to get away from the "modern world". Definitely in the vein of Southern Gothic authors such as Flannery O'Connor, maybe with the prose inspiration from Anthony Doerr's "All the Light We Cannot See". It hasn't gone through many renditions so there may be some silly mistakes here and there (though if you want a pass at my grammar, please do.)

As usual, just give me any and all critique. Plot, characters, atmosphere, grammar--anything you feel needs scribbling down.
