The Untouchable

When I was five, there was

a bird’s nest sitting on the roof

so silent, and

untouchable

for I was short and had

pathetic, wobbly arms.

I tried to jump, jumping

as high as I could, and I could

barely touch the eaves.

So I called my father,

Daddy! There’s a bird nest

at the top!

because if anything got stuck up high,

whether a cat on a roof,

or a kite on a tree,

he would grab his handy ladder

for he is our trusty household handyman.

But, this time he climbed up,

and I wanted him to

give the nest to me—

but he never did.

He climbed down,

and I asked,

Can I see it? Can I see it?

No son,

because a mother is waiting

to hatch her two babies

back home.

Oh, hi there; didn't see you! You've reached r/OCPoetry. This is a workshop site where you can share, read, and talk about eachother's poetry & etc. To post your own poems, you need to give feedback to 2 other writers. If you aren't trying to share, you're encouraged to give feedback, but aren't required. Try to be nice, questioning, and specific. If you can't do that - eat a cabbage and come back later. Try to give feedback to a writer without any feedback. Lastly, read our feedback guide , other writer's comments, or this author’s feedback links. If you still aren't sure whether your comments are useful ‘feedback’, or you have any other questions, send us a modmail!

My first response to this was "AWWWW :)". I really liked how you basically made a short scene in my head. This poem made me feel nostalgic due how you wrote the dialog. "Can I see it? Can I see it?" followed by "No son" gives of child and some wise old figure with nothing but care for the younger one energy. Basically Kratos in God of War lol. You saying "household handyman" as well as characterizing the dad by saying

"because if anything got stuck up high,
whether a cat on a roof,
or a kite on a tree,
he would grab his handy ladder"

made me mentally look up at and to him. He feels reliable and strong, opposite to the "pathetic" five year old.

The final stanza instills respect for gentle nature because it's being told spoken by this wise, strong, caring figure. It's nice.

If I had to change anything, with would be to take out "my father" in the third stanza. It seems unneeded and somewhat takes me out the false memory, Then again, it adds a reminiscent quality to the poem, making it clear it's a memory. That just doesn't seem to be the point. Still, this is great. Thanks for sharing!

reminds me of my own childhood. now that i’m almost an adult, i can imagine my self as both the child and the father at the same time. i still have the same wonder about little things in the world, but i now recognize their place in the larger connected ecosystem.

beautifully written.
